SCHOENECKER CENTER CONSTRUCTION TRANSFORMS SOUTH CAMPUS

Construction crews have been busy this summer working on the Schoenecker Center,
a $110 million state-of-the-art STEAM complex that aims to break down barriers
in collaborative learning. The Center will add more than 40,000 square feet of
engineering labs, classrooms, and collaboration spaces for our students, nearly
doubling the space in use today.

NEW $5.4 MILLION GRANT PROPELS MICROGRID RESEARCH

The School of Engineering is honored to receive a $5.4M grant from the state of
Minnesota to expand the capacity of the St Thomas Center for Microgrid Research.
The grant follows a $2.1M award from the Xcel Energy Renewable Development
Account that launched the Center. With this new investment, the Center will be
positioned to support national level collaborations in advancing microgrid
controls, electrical grid resiliency, and renewable energy research. The Center
will actively engage St. Thomas students in preparing them for our advanced
electrical grid future.

The St. Thomas Center for Microgrid Research is led by Dr. Mahmoud Kabalan from
the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
