The NFL might be experiencing a quarterback crisis, with Lamar Jackson and Joe
Burrow playing at a superior level but few others having anything close to their
best seasons throwing the football. Widespread mediocre play undoubtedly will
lead to another battle royal for quarterbacks this offseason.

We chronicled last week just how bad the bottom of the NFL is, with perhaps a
quarter of the league hopeless and adrift with two months of football still to
play. It will lead to another coaching purge come January, and many of the new
coaches will seek an upgrade at quarterback. It has become clear that there are
several tiers: a large lower class whose rosters lack the answer at quarterback,
another cluster of teams that might join the bottom-feeders in pursuit of new
passers, and plenty of other clubs that are stuck with what they have because of
contractual obligations.
