VIDEOJPEG QUALITY IN A NUTSHELL

Ben from Compress-Or-Die explains the two quality sliders in the JPEG
compressor, their meaning, and how the human eye perceives brightness and color
information differently.

He also discusses the quantization table, which determines how much an image is
compressed, and how the formula used to calculate the table can differ between
programs or online services.

ARTICLETHE NASTY RED JPG COMPRESSION ARTIFACTS

During an exchange with an illustrator about another article, he asked me why
the JPEG format is so bad at handling the color red. As an explanation, I have
already run across several variants. So I simply answered the questions with the
variant that seemed most plausible to me.

But was that really the right answer? And if we knew the right answer.... then
can't we do something about it?

ARTICLEBETTER IMAGE QUALITY IN YOUR TWITTER TWEETS

Every now and then I come across tweets where users are upset about the lousy
quality of their posted images after Twitter compresses them and doesn't speak
well of Twitter.

But is the quality really that bad? Does Twitter really not care about image
quality? Is Twitter trying to save storage space on its servers at all costs? Or
are the users themselves to blame and have already uploaded their images in poor
quality?

I took a closer look at what Twitter actually does with your images in the
tweets.

ARTICLETHE BIG IMAGE COMPRESSION TOOL COMPARISON

There are a lot of articles about online image compression tools in the net,
most of them are very superficial. Usually they end with a simple: "It generates
smaller pictures, so it's got to be better."

Learn why such statements are most of the time meaningless, understand the
technical background, and find out which tool you should use as of today.

Image compression with AI
2023-06-25

Wow! Google researchers have now proposed a new method that combines a standard
autoencoder with a diffusion process to recover and add fine details discarded
by the autoencoder. Interesting to see the possibilities AI opens up when
compressing images.

A year ago, generating realistic images with AI was a dream. We were impressed

Downtime of the page due to the shutdown of the Twitter app
2023-04-29

Perhaps you have noticed. The site was down for a day. What passed me by was
that Twitter ended free access to the API, and without mail announcement stopped
all apps that didn't subscribe to the Basic account for $100 USD. 😡 So I had to
rebuild the news system without Twitter at short notice.

Now everything should be up and running again and I can get back to cool new
features.

Not quite sure if the settings options in Compress-Or-Die are really well
understood. 🤔 That's why I created a video explaining the two quality sliders
in the JPEG Compressor as a test. I am curious about your feedback.

New Reddit channel
2023-03-21

Just a little update. Firstly, I have started a Reddit channel and would like to
try out with you whether we can get a lively exchange there. I would be happy.

On the other hand, a lot has happened under the hood of Compress-Or-Die, which
should provide minimally better results here and there. For example, it is now
possible to convert a JPEG lossless into a JPEG XL (thanks to Ted for the idea).
Also all used binaries like mozjpeg, cjxl, svgo and others have been updated.

Happy compressing.
