WONDER AS A PROMISE

January 23, 2022January 23, 2022 Aneli DefanifLeave a comment
Just like a map, the world exists, because of love.

Wonder is a concept that became fully realized when someone saw the existence of
love in the world. Like in a trustful, beautiful relationship, Wonder has many
facets to still discover. When plodding down courses like a stream and enjoying
the little eddies hidden in this river of Wonder, I stumbled across a place,
which seems to be where much rest and beauty lie.

This place is Northern Canada. For me, it is more than just a piece of a country
with old hills and undulating waves of farmland. I believe it houses some
elements of mystery of the past and the present, which we long to capture so
often in our creativity.

If we go back in time to 2014, we find ourselves above sea level, where someone
picked up a branch from one of the many allergy-laden trees up there and started
wondering:

– “What if I draw something which people will find interesting?”

-“What do I have as a gift to give others, so they might know beauty?”

– “What if I show the beauty of mountains and rivers to those who live far away
from them?”

– “What if I stretch my hand and let someone else enjoy what I see?”

These questions were secret longings of a young person’s heart. She did not know
what true Wonder was and still is trying to figure it out, but she is a little
more advanced in years. She has some understanding, she has begun to understand.
Her hand started moving and made the first stroke on paper. Who knows how many
more will come after that one? Every stroke will be another step towards
understanding what in life the deep and powerful word of Wonder means.

When the young woman became heartbroken by the ways of time, she found her hand
went to the page, music, and the stroke of a drawing utensil. She forgot,
though, that there is one more critical ingredient. Hope.

The actions of this tiny world play so well into the concept of Wonder. A quote
she discovered recently about the feeling of Hope entering life and transforming
one goes about thus:

“‘Cause you are loved

You are loved more than you know

I hereby pledge all of my days

To prove it so

Though your heart is far too young to realize

The unimaginable light you hold inside.”

~Sleeping at Last, Light.

This is from a powerful and hopeful song about someone who profoundly feels
directed and driven to defend the idea of Hope and innocence in what seems to be
a child they know. A feeling when listening to this song they need more than
just to defend them as well, as they are captivated by the Wonder this child has
brought into their existence. This Wonder is held in the line: “The unimaginable
light you hold inside.”

This young woman who found Hope also found a promise a Parent promised to his
little girl, with the words “Never to be left or forsaken” imbued into her
being.

She was lonely for a while, but she dived into the deep and still lake of
Knowledge, of story. She dove deep to find out what this promise meant, she wept
over it, her eyes cried tears of frustration when her heart felt alone in
silence, but she kept Wondering. She kept journeying on to the “Unimaginable
light.” The power was held within some secret place inside of her, and it taught
her how to create.

Then, one day, when she saw a sunset on the mountains of her new home, she felt
these lyrics come unbidden to her soul.

There’s a song we want to sing,

A song within our hearts,

A song that’s distant now,

But the light will come to start.

There’s a joy we long to know

A hope we long to see,

A song we long to sing,

A King we long to see.

Come away and see the light,

Come away, and see the fire

Sing along with me in this life

As we walk the miles.

Come away and sail the seas

Adventure lies beyond

Come away, and feel the breeze

And hear the song.

There’s a song we long to sing,

A song within our hearts,

A rhythm we long to feel

As this journey starts.

Tell a story, long and true,

And callin’ in the West

And come along and see

The journey we know best!

Come away and see the stars!

Come away and feel the heart!

There is one who longs to sing with us

The Mercies of the King.

There’s a song we long to hear,

In this atmosphere,

A joy we long to know,

A hope forevermore!

So, she is now beginning to ask herself more questions about life itself, about
the adventure before the destination. However, this time, she is armed with
ideas from a Parent’s promise to “never be alone.” A commitment filling her with
“Unimaginable Light.”

THE WINGFEATHER SAGA AS AN ADULT

Wonder is the heart of the concept of the Story. I just wrote about this earlier
today. In this modern age, looking at the world through a postmodern lens that
it is difficult to imagine having modern fantasy literature existing with the
concept of Needing versus Wanting. Wonder is lacking in the world of most books
these days due to most people thinking Writing is Wanting. IT IS NOT.

Today, I will be writing about the Wingfeather Saga, a series of 4 books I feel
capture the essence of Wonder. Author Andrew Peterson has written a tale which
in its “Ancient Stone” foundation, a story that sings with love, need, hope,
redemption from brokenness, and where a theme of Wonder resides.

Alright, I will lay out the cast, and without spoiling too much, go over the
arcs of these characters.

The story follows three children, turned more mature as the books go on. In
order of age these three are:

Janner: A twelve-year-old with an oldest’s responsibility and a fierce heart for
protection

Tink, aka Kalmar: An eleven-year-old boy with the middle child’s tendencies to
get into trouble, but also to get out of it with guts and wit

Leeli: The nine-year-old youngest who has a crutch due to a terrible injury as a
baby, but also a voice that awakens the Maker’s magic in the world

There is their grandpa Podo, and their mother Nia as well, who put up with their
mischief and their struggling young hearts to do the right thing.

Each character’s background excites curiosity about what the world is built on,
as there are many hidden details. The world can be hilarious with odd names like
“Toothy Cows” for animals, or “Blapp,” for a river, but what permeates these
books is the sense of loving detail put into the mysteries of the world such as
the “Shining Isle” which is one of the main plot point locations.

Secondary characters shine through as well, such as Artham Wingfeather, aka Peet
the Sockman, or Sara Cobbler, the orphan from something known as the “Fork!
Factory!”

You feel like you need to see the end of their struggles as much as the primary
characters, and this is what is a deep power of the story. It gives you a Sense
of Wonder, you feel like the Maker is breathing from these pages. This is what
is needed in fiction, stories where the hero cannot finish the job, but is given
a permeating sense of love and courage to be supported and the Maker makes it
happen.

The Wingfeather Saga is a story that resonates to the heart, and it is
refreshing in this day of mechanical stories with no human Need gaining the
answer to the deep questions of life.

I recommend Wingfeather for all who love great storytelling. As I said above, it
has strong elements of Wonder in its themes of redemptive love. Wingfeater Saga
may be fantasy literature’s biggest shot yet at redeeming post-modern notions
and trading them for Wonder.

WONDER IN STORY

January 14, 2022January 14, 2022 Aneli DefanifLeave a comment
A sunrise gives one a sense of Wonder

Wonder is the heart of the concept of the Story. It is not just something that
happens in a story, it is what drives one to want to hear more about that story.
This post will explore the concept of Wonder and how it influences the stories
one tells, how the author responds to wonder, and finally to think about stories
in a new way.

When one thinks about the word “Wonder,” one should consider the definition of
the word. According to the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, it is this:

Essential Meaning of wonder

1: something or someone that is very surprising, beautiful, amazing, etc.

2: a feeling caused by seeing something that is very surprising, beautiful,
amazing, etc.

3: something that is surprising or hard to believe.

Source: https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/wonder

Now that that has been defined, let one explore the way Wonder is defined in
terms of a story. It can be the amazement and awe that one experiences when
looking at something beautiful or hearing a story that captures one’s attention.
It is that sense of excitement and anticipation one thinks of as “I want to know
more about what is happening in the story.”

A landscape from a story the Author is working on

Wonder can also be the magic of a story. Magic does not have to be a thing with
spells and wands like in modern-day fiction, but rather, a more appropriate word
used to describe the idea could be the “Miracle” of the story. It is an event or
happening in the story that goes beyond what is normal and expected. It could be
something as simple as a character being kind to another when it is not in their
best interest, or a twist that happens at the end of the story.

When writing a story, Wonder should always be kept in mind. What can the author
do to make the reader wonder about what is going on in the story? What can be
done, even if it requires a suspension of belief for some people, that will keep
them wondering or entertained as they read through the pages of the book.

Wonder also means being open and taking chances with one’s writing style and
ideas. One should not always follow what one thinks one wants, but it might be
considering what one needs. The Story is in the details, and if one does not
take a chance with it, then there are no chances to be taken.

Another thought about this concept of Wonder is how an author can respond to it
when they create their own stories. The first thing that comes up may be: “I do
not know what I need.” Wonder is not about addressing the want to eat a known
food like pizza, but rather it could be that it might be a need to eat curry, a
less commonly-known food in the West. Eating something with spices instead of
grease and an excessive amount of cheese can give one a different perspective on
the world one knows with their food. It is the same with Wonder.

Pizza, it has grease

There is a deeper sense of Wonder than just pizza and curry. It has to do with
the human heart. When one reads a story, they are opening their heart to the
author and the characters in order to understand what is happening, and as with
stories, the human heart is opened to life when trying to assimilate the world’s
perspective. Wonder is at the core of how stories work. When one experiences
Wonder, it opens up their heart and mind to new possibilities.

Wonder is an innate need as opposed to a want. When in terms of stories, it is
the longing to experience a little discovery popping inside one like a
firecracker. One might think they know what Wonder is, but it could be one of
those needs that are not being addressed by the story one has in mind.

Wonder in art is the meaning of expressing and communicating the need versus the
want of an image, word, or sound. Wonder is the true form of art, the form of
discovering the “Miracle” of Creation laid down at the beginning of time. As
J.R.R Tolkien wrote in his poem Mythopoeia:

“Blessed are the legend-makers with their rhyme

of things not found within recorded time.”

Source: http://vrici.lojban.org/~cowan/mythopoeia.html

This is part of an extensive and beautiful set of verses that refer to an artist
being able to see something, not within their own space, “time,” and experience,
but rather in the way a storyteller sees things. They are able to see the world
afresh with each telling of their story. Wonder is at the heart of what it means
to be an artist. It is not about copying what has been done before or relying on
formulas and traditions; it is about opening up to the need versus the want.

I am Aneli Defanif, and this is my website onto which you have stumbled.

I am not as much of an aspiring author, as much as I am a published author now.
My first book, called When Before Brave Dragons is now on Amazon internationally
for purchase. My filmmaking with stop motion will continue for some time, but I
have decided to invest this website into promoting truth and inspiration for the
world through things which I publish. I look forward to this opportunity!

Sincerely,
