DAILY UNIVERSAL REGISTER

BRIEFING

UK: Labour market statistics released by the ONS, and universal credit
statistics by the Department for Work and Pensions; First round of the Carabao
English Football League Cup.

ON THIS DAY

In 1876 Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen was first performed in its entirety in
Bayreuth, beginning on this day; in 1889 a patent for the first coin-operated
payphone was granted to William Gray, with the first device installed in
Hartford, Connecticut. His invention was inspired after he was refused access to
a phone to call a doctor to attend to his ailing wife; in 1961 East Germany
started to use barbed wire to seal off the West Berlin border, with construction
of the concrete Berlin Wall starting within days; in 1964 the last judicial
executions in the UK, of two murderers, took place, in Liverpool and Manchester.

NATURE NOTES

The busy breeding season over, many garden birds are changing into a new outfit.
Feathers suffer wear and tear, deteriorate due to UV light, are lost or weakened
due to mites, pulled out to line nests, or damaged in fights, but to fly well,
evade predators and stay warm, birds need their plumage to be in good condition.
Some species take on different colouring in winter, such as the snow bunting, or
alter their plumage depending on their life stage, like gulls. While moulting
they are more vulnerable than usual so they tend to stay quiet and out of sight:
the dawn and evening choruses are over, and many species, such as blackbirds,
will not sing again now until spring next year. Melissa Harrison
