About Work Blog AboutWorkBlog Scroll WORK HIGHLIGHTS VIEW ALL WORK TRELLO + DROPBOX I was the PM and Trello’s lead designer for this strategic partnership from idea to launch at the Keynote presentation for Dropbox’s “Work In Progress” conference. During this partnership, I planned, organized, and executed the strategic vision all while collaborating remotely with the Dropbox Design team on Figma. I met with Dropbox and Trello teams (EMs, PMs, Marketing) weekly, documented our work on Dropbox Paper, and communicated using Slack. Our goal was to develop seamless integration for users that removed context switching when using both products to manage tasks, projects, and files. Trello: The biggest opportunity I identified was education and discovery. Informed through research, we solved this problem with smart contextual Dropbox Power-Up install suggestions based on Dropbox links added to Trello cards. Furthermore, we included full file previews within Trello to eliminate context switching. Dropbox: The data informed and guided us to integrate the right amount of Trello features - such as including due date creation rather than label additions- thereby creating a powerful file sharing flow. Success: Impactful Keynote demo, increased Dropbox usage on Trello, creation of Trello cards within Dropbox, and a solidification of Trello’s brand recognition in the work collaboration space through media coverage during launch. One of the first opportunities I identified resulted from seeking out user feedback and identifying comments consistently suggesting that the app was clunky, slow, dated, and not enjoyable. This signalled a clear need for platform improvements and UI/UX optimization. To address this, we decided to redesign the second most viewed screen in the app: the card detail screen. Three project goals: 1. Modernization 2. Improved UX/UI 3. Future Growth Foundations To modernize the app, I leveraged the most up-to-date design patterns from each platform. We iterated by balancing platform excellence, Trello branding, accessibility, delight, and innovative initiatives. To address significant usability issues, I completed a UI/UX audit. One of many takeaways was the use of several input patterns made even worse when some static text headlines looked like inputs. These inconsistencies created confusion and led to a frustrating experience. We introduced contextual actions throughout the Cardback to reflect the user's content, thereby improving the ease of tasks such as adding additional attachments. Looking ahead, we found common ground by focusing on content hierarchy and information architecture. This established a balance of platform excellence and product consistency to create a scaleable design system. Power-Ups empower users to extend Trello’s capabilities and integrate their favorite apps into Trello. I’m proud to have been part of this team for over 3 years because we saw the potential for a Trello platform and grew it from a set of 20 Power-Ups to a full-fledged platform that now has over 200 Power-Ups, supports new businesses built on top of the platform, and most importantly is leveraged by countless users/teams to unlock new workflows. I love working on platforms because they are a powerful competitive advantage that can create deep moats, lead to compounding value, and drive product scale. Additionally, one strength of a platform is found in how it enables the product to rapidly respond to the “long tail” of user needs and market changes. When users understand how they can leverage a platform, users churn less and become more valuable customers. A great platform requires great developer resources. I led UI/UX standards for Power-Ups, provided free design resources, launched a developer admin, and led strategic partnerships, to name a few initiatives. Butler helps users build powerful automations for Trello boards. Before 2018, Butler was a third-party Power-Up helping users create millions of automations. We had three main goals for this migration: 1. Engineering / Trello Core Feature Effort 2. Surface Smart Automation Suggestions 3. Improvements to Automation Creation Learn more… -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRELLO DESIGN SYSTEM As a team, we not only developed and shipped a comprehensive design system, we simultaneously updated design elements on Trello. This is such an amazing accomplishment because while we were making design decisions that would guide our design language for years to come, we also tested, validated, and shipped our design decisions.
