FlexJobs’ Work Insights Survey gained valuable data about AI adoption in the
workplace. Explore insights into the AI gender gap and how it may affect
workforce dynamics.

THE AI GENDER GAP: EXPLORING VARIANCES IN WORKPLACE ADOPTION

While AI has been around for years, the recent release of new, more advanced
programs has accelerated AI’s integration into everyday life, including the
workforce. However, acceptance and willing adoption of artificial intelligence
is a different story.

To better understand perspectives around AI, FlexJobs polled over 5,600 working
professionals between May 3, 2023, and May 21, 2023. Through the responses, men
and women shared when and how they utilize artificial intelligence.

AI AT HOME AND WORK

One of the most significant findings of the survey is that men (54%) are using
AI in either or both their personal and professional life, while women (35%) are
adopting AI at a much slower pace. The findings broken down by gender are below.

AI Utilization by Gender

 * Use in personal life: 15% women, 21% men
 * Use in both personal/professional life: 11% women, 12% men
 * Use at work (with manager’s permission): 5% women, 11% men
 * Use at work (without manager’s permission): 4% women, 10% men

While the above data is specific to all areas of adaptation, when applied to job
searching, the pattern of usage by gender is maintained.

AI WHEN JOB SEARCHING

Artificial intelligence has gained traction with job seekers, as it allows them
to more efficiently and effectively optimize their resumes and cover letters.
However, as FlexJobs’ Career Expert Keith Spencer noted, utilization of AI
programs should aid in the job search. When used effectively, it can be a
powerful tool to help support and streamline the process.

Both men and women are implementing AI programs in their job search, and at a
higher rate than it has been implemented for personal usage or in the workplace.
However, just as general adaptation saw men utilizing AI more frequently, the
same holds true for those looking for new employment. Below is a breakdown of
the data.

 AI Utilization in Job Search

 * Have used or considering AI in job search: 46% women, 60% men
 * Have used AI in job search: 15% women, 21% men
 * Considering using AI in job search: 31% women, 39% men

Although working professionals and job seekers alike have found AI’s application
useful, there are still mixed thoughts on the overall impact it will have on the
workforce.

AI AND JOB SECURITY

As full integration of AI is explored due to recent advances, there’s still a
lot to learn regarding the impact on the workforce. The FlexJobs survey inquired
about different perspectives on AI’s impacts on the workplace and job security.
The results are mixed.

Although men have had higher overall adoption of AI in their personal and
professional lives, they also have more concerns over its impact on their job
security. More specifically, 38% of men say AI is currently threatening the
security of their job (11%) or think it will threaten their job (27%). Women, on
the other hand, have lower concerns—27% overall, with 7% saying it is currently
threatening their roles and 20% saying it may in the future.

Despite job security concerns, most men say AI will positively affect the
workplace. And while most women are unsure of its impact overall, there’s only a
slight difference in perspective on whether it will positively or negatively
affect the workplace. Below is a closer look at the data.

AI: Positive or Negative Impact on Workplace

 * Not sure: 44% women, 28% men
 * Negatively impact workplace: 26% women, 29% men
 * Positively impact workplace: 25% women, 35% men
 * Will not impact workplace: 5% women, 8% men

AI AND THE WORKFORCE

Artificial intelligence isn’t going away anytime soon. Instead, we’re likely to
see substantial growth as technologies are refined and wider adoption takes
place. One of the best things professionals can do regarding AI is to understand
its impacts and how to use it.
