DOING BUSINESS IN THE GULF REGION

This is the website of the Dutch economic network in the Gulf region

'To promote business between the Netherlands and the GCC countries'

WATER-ENERGY-FOOD NEXUS

The Water-Energy-Food (WEF) nexus is the complex link between, water, energy and
food: actions in one area often have an impact on the two others. For this
reason, the WEF nexus approach has gained significant traction over the years as
an integral method of resource management and sustainable development.

Continuing fluctuations in oil prices exposed the risks and challenges for the
member states of the GCC in securing long-term sustainability of their water,
energy, and food resources.

All GCC countries are characterized by an extreme hyper-arid climate. These
states rank among the lowest in the world in freshwater resources and soil
fertility, but among the highest in water, energy, and food consumption, and
carbon emissions.

DUTCH GOVERNMENT: STRONG ADVOCATE OF WEF NEXUS APPROACH

For the global development agenda, the decisions taken in 2015 - above all the
adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement
- mean a crucial paradigm shift and change of perspective with far-reaching
consequences, not least in the water sector.

The Water-Energy-Food nexus approach is the best response to the ambitious and
challenging goals of economically sustainable, integrated and low-carbon
development in the GCC countries.

EXPLORING OPPORTUNITIES FOR DUTCH BUSINESS

The Dutch economic network in the GCC countries consists of the embassies in
Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), Abu Dhabi (UAE), Muscat (Oman), Doha (Qatar, in Dutch)
and Kuwait City (Kuwait, Bahrain), and the consulate-general in Dubai (UAE).

We offer services to assist Dutch companies, entrepreneurs and knowledge
institutions in exploring opportunities within WEF  and beyond. These services
focus on providing market information, identifying potential partners and
advising you about setting up a business.

In addition to water, energy and food, various growth sectors  such as finance,
logistics, aviation, communications, healthcare and tourism provide interesting
business opportunities.

THE GULF COOPERATION COUNCIL (GCC)

The GCC is the political and economic union of Arab states bordering the Gulf.
It was established in 1981. Its six members are the United Arab Emirates, Saudi
Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait and Bahrain.

A large number of Dutch companies, both multinationals and SMEs, is already
doing business in the region. Increasingly, this is done with a local presence
and country visits. Trade missions, economic diplomacy initiatives, delegations
and joint submissions for exhibitions are organized from the Netherlands to the
GCC countries.
