There is an increased interest in opportunities of improving rainfed agriculture
through adoption of rainwater harvesting RWH technologies. However, there is
inadequate knowledge on hydrological impacts and limits of up-scaling rainwater
harvesting at a river basin scale. Rainwater harvesting has a potential of
addressing spatial and temporal water scarcity for domestic, crop production,
livestock development, environmental management and overall water resources
management is SASE.

However, this potential has not been exploited despite the occurrence of
persistent low agricultural production and food shortage in sub-Saharan Africa.
It is envisaged that the study will contribute to formulation of sustainable RWH
up-scaling strategies to enhance food production and hydro-ecological balance in
semi-arid savannahs of Africa. This paper presents the preliminary findings of
the study mainly focusing on assessment of the potential of RWH technologies for
improving food and water availability especially in semi-arid regions of eastern
Africa.

Despite the success of a number of RWH systems, the rate of adoption is still
low, hence making their impacts marginal. Nevertheless, there is a knowledge gap
on the limits of up-scaling RWH in a river basin, which the other components of
the study will address. The assessment of the hydrological impact of up-scaling
RWH technologies is expected to provide answers to the question, what is the
limit of up-scaling rainwater harvesting in a river basin?

To our knowledge, this is the first in situ study of the isotopic composition of
microbial nitrate in forest soils. Over a 2-week period, nitrate produced by
nitrification was periodically flushed to the lysimeters by watering the area
with a nitrogen-free solution. No significant difference in d18O—O2 from
atmospheric O2 was found in forest soils to a depth of 55 cm, and therefore
18O-enrichment of soil gas O2 could not explain the modest enrichment of nitrate
18O.

Evaporative 18O-enrichment of soil water available to nitrifiers in the forest
floor is a plausible mechanism for slightly elevated nitrate d18O values.
However, the observed nitrate d18O values could also be explained by a minor
contribution of nitrate from heterotrophic nitrifiers.

Microbial nitrate produced in the forest floor was also significantly depleted
in 15N relative to microbial nitrate exported in groundwater and headwater
streams at the TLW. We hypothesize that 15N-depleted forest floor nitrate is not

floor nitrate in the mineral soil and 2 the mixing of the remaining forest floor
nitrate with nitrate generated in the mineral soil, which is expected to have
higher d15N values.

This study demonstrates that current methods of calculating a priori the d18O of
microbial nitrate provide a reasonable value for nitrate produced by
