PARENT NEWSLETTER

AUGUST 2023- WELCOME BACK

NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Families,

This newsletter comes to you to welcome all of our former families back to
Andersen and welcome our new families. The Smore newletter will come to you at
least monthly to let you know of upcoming events, pass needed information to
you, and to share anything and everything that is going on at Andersen.

Your teachers will give you information at the beginning of the year for their
specific classroom procedures and information.

Take a look at the information below. Feel free to save to refer back to as
needed.

It was so nice to see everyone at Meet the Teacher. It's going to be a great
year!

Mrs. Harris

Proud Principal of Andersen Elementary

WELCOME BACK FROM ANDERSEN FACULTY AND STAFF!!!

Fridays- 8:30-am- 1:45pm

Breakfast hours 8:00am-8:25

**No students should be on campus prior to 8:00am. There is no supervision at
the gates prior to 8am so please time your students arriving to school AFTER
8am.

Classes begin instruction promptly at 8:30. If students are late to class they
will miss instruction. Missed instruction means missed learning opportunities.
Please do your best to have your child arrive on time.

BREAKFAST AND LUNCH

Breakfast and Lunch are free to all students at Andersen. We are an approved CEP
(Community Eligibility Provision) school.

You are still encouraged to apply for free and reduced lunch status to possibly
open up financial benefits for us and increased opportunities for you. Click
here https://www.brevardschools.org/Page/3473 to apply.

To add money to your child's account to buy al-a-cart items and snacks create a
MyMealpayPlus account so money is always available.
http://www.mypaymentsplus.com/. Informational flyer below. Extra snacks will not
be available for the first 2 weeks of school.

CAR LOOPS

The front car loop is only to be used in the morning by cars. In the afternoon
it is reserved for daycare vans and buses. No cars may enter the front car loop
in the afternoon.

The south side car loop is used in the morning and afternoon for drop off and
pick up. In the morning use ONLY the right lane. One line of cars to drop off
students.

In the afternoon you will use both lanes to pick up students. Choose a lane and
stay in that lane throughout the entire loop until you get to the exiting lane
to choose left or right to get onto Fiske. Please have your car tag hanging from
your mirror so that it can easily be seen by the name caller. Keep the car tag
hanging until your child is in the car so the teachers at the gate know who they
are looking for. Follow the traffic and pull all the way forward until you get
to the next open gate. Be sure to stay to the left of your lane so there is room
to open your car door and not hit the fence. The left lane also should stay to
the left of their lane. Teachers will stop and dismiss the 2 lanes of cars at
the same time to ensure student and staff safety.

If your child is slow coming out or misses hearing their name you will be asked
to pull forward to one of the open parking spots at the end of loop while we
retrieve your child.

It is important to remain patient and focused during the car line. It will take
longer the first week or so until everyone learns the rhythm. That is OK and I
promise it will get faster. Please stay off your phones while in the car loop so
you are focused on safety.

No adult is allowed to walk up in the car lanes to drop off or pick up your
child. Stay in your car and allow your child to get out of the car. You also
should not get out of your car to let your child out. We will have safety
patrols or teachers to help them in and out of the cars.

WALKERS AND BIKERS

Walkers and bike riders will enter through the gate on the north east side of
campus (the gate near the traffic light on Fiske). The gate opens in the morning
at 8am and then opens at 3pm in the afternoon. Parents that want to walk up to
campus and drop off/pick up their child should make arrangements for their child
to be a walker/biker and meet them at the gate. You may not park in the school
parking lot to walk your child to the gate or to pick them up at the gate. You
have the option to park along the neighboring street, but please be mindful not
to park on their grass or block their driveways. It is best and easiest if your
child is in walking distance to have them walk home or use the car line to pick
them up and drop them off.

BIRTHDAYS/FOOD DELIVERIES

Birthday treats MUST be pre-arranged with the teacher. Classrooms cannot
accommodate whole cakes, ice creams, etc. The teacher will not be able to cut
serve, etc. Contact your teacher for anything birthday related.

Birthday treats can be ordered from our cafeteria for the class if you would
like. Cupcakes, cookies, etc. Please call Mrs. Brothers in the cafeteria for
prices.

Food deliveries from delivery services cannot be accepted at school. Following
board policy we will refuse delivery. If you need to drop off lunch it will need
to be from the parent/guardian on the registration.

DRESS CODE

BPS has updated their dress code policy. Most importantly for elementary school:
Slides and crocs are not to be worn at school. Our students attend recess and PE
daily. Also hats, sunglasses, and hoodies on sweatshirts are not to be worn
inside the building.

Please click the link below to access the entire BPS dress code policy.

UPDATED STUDENT DRESS CODE POLICY

www.brevardschools.org
Policy 5511 - STUDENT DRESS CODE The Board recognizes that each student's mode
of dress is a manifestation of personal style and individual preference. The
Board will not interfere with the right of students and their parents/legal
guardians to make decisions regarding their appearance, however, the standards
of appearance for students shall ensure that the student be clean, neat, and
properly dressed.

GRADE REPORTING

Report cards are issued to students every 9 weeks. Interims will be issued in
FOCUS midway through the 9 week period. Parents in grades 3-6 can access their
updated grades in FOCUS at anytime. I encourage all parents to regularly check
FOCUS to stay abreast of your child's academic standing and keep up with any
work that may be missing. Great conversations can be had when parents and
students regularly check their grades in FOCUS. If you have questions or
concerns about grades please contact your child's teacher.

VOLUNTEER INFORMATION

If you plan to volunteer or attend any field trips this year, you must be a
registered volunteer. Please check your volunteer status to make sure you
haven't expired. If you are new to BPS schools, you can go to
https://www.brevardschools.org/site/Default.aspx?PageID=2327 to register online
then you will be prompted to go to the Educational Services Facility to get
fingerprinted and background check.
