CREATING A CLEANER WORLD THROUGH COMPOST

How2Compost is a standardized on-package label that clearly communicates
composting instructions to the public. Both How2Compost and How2Recycle, its
companion program, involve a coalition of forward thinking brands who want their
packaging to be recycled and composted and are empowering consumers through
smart packaging labels.

A SMARTER LABEL SYSTEM

As more communities, businesses, and municipalities adopt composting programs
and practices, consumers will need to understand whether a package is
compostable or not. The How2Compost label was created to provide standardized
and transparent on-package composting information, and is compatible with the
How2RecycleⓇ label.

 * SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS TAB

   Here, text may help you know something is not yet recyclable, or help you
   know how to prepare the packaging for composting.

 * BPI CERTIFIED LOGO

   This icon means that the item has been certified as compostable by BPI.

 * TYPE OF MATERIAL

   Tells you that this material is compostable.

 * FORMAT OF MATERIAL

   Information on what parts of the packaging should be composted in a certain
   way.

   about compostable packaging.

COMPOSTING STILL HAS BIG PROBLEMS THAT WE ARE HELPING TO SOLVE

The relative newness of composting infrastructure, as well as inconsistency of
composting communication at all levels, is a major cause of consumer confusion.
The How2Compost label collectively increases the level of consumer knowledge
about composting. If local programs reference the label alongside the items they
accept, the How2Compost label can be a unifying, recognizable piece of
information across all programs.

Most Compostables Still End up in Landfills Some people still don't know or
forget that certain materials are compostable.

Composting Labels are Not Yet Standardized Many compostable items aren't labeled
properly when it comes to being composted.

Recycling Information is Hard to Understand With so much conflicting composting
information out there, it's easy to get confused. Incorrect composting behavior
is common.
