 * What we do
   What we do

   We bring together eight activities required to deliver the plans, markets and
   operations of the energy system of today and the future. Bringing these
   activities together in one organisation encourages holistic thinking on the
   most cost-efficient and sustainable solutions to the needs of our customers.

   Back What we do View
    * Strategic Energy Planning

      The SEP team work in partnership with governments, Ofgem, industry and
      wider stakeholders to guide Great Britain on what infrastructure and
      sources of electricity are required to securely accelerate the transition
      away from fossil fuels into new energy technologies, including renewable
      energy.

    * Security of Supply

      Security of Supply analyses where the energy we need over the short,
      medium and long-term will come from. In doing so it assesses a wide range
      of factors that could affect our supply of energy, enabling early actions
      and decisions to ensure we can meet future demand.

    * Systems Operations

      From hospitals to households, telecoms to transportation, our society
      relies on electricity. Our control centre makes sure there is always a
      reliable and safe supply as we move megawatts around the country.

    * Connections Explained

      We will deliver efficient system access for Generation and Demand
      projects, so that those projects that are first ready can be first served
      – delivering the energy system to meet net zero and facilitating economic
      growth by connecting new and existing industries.

    * Resilience & Emergency Management

      Our energy system is complex, with an increasing number of
      interconnections. This means that disruption to one part can have
      implications for another. But this complexity also provides us with more
      options to mitigate problems.

    * Energy Insights

      We will develop comprehensive and independent insights across the entire
      energy system, offering clear recommendations to policy makers, industry
      decision makers and leadership across our organisation on how to
      accelerate energy transition progress.

    * Energy Markets

      Whether you’re interested in the innovation underway in the Markets team
      or are looking to brush up on market fundamentals, you’ve come to the
      right place.

    * Data & AI

      NESO will bring together data from multiple sources in a way that enables
      the modern digitalised energy system needed for a low carbon, flexible and
      affordable future.

NATIONAL ENERGY SYSTEM OPERATOR (NESO)

Today, we have become NESO, you can find out what that means in the following
article.
Join us on this transformative journey

YOUR ENERGY, YOUR FUTURE, OUR PURPOSE

We are the National Energy System Operator for Great Britain, making sure that
Great Britain has the essential energy it needs by ensuring supply meets demand
every second of every day.

The UK’s 2023 Energy Act established an independent system planner and operator
to help accelerate Great Britain’s energy transition; creating the National
Energy System Operator (NESO).

NESO is built on our previous experience as the Electricity System Operator
(ESO), where we had extensive expertise in balancing electricity supply and
demand 24/7, whilst making sure the networks we operated and the markets we
served were prepared for the future.

INTRODUCING NESO

Fundamental to NESO is the ability to bring an independent, impartial voice to
energy system planning and operations that takes this whole system view. We’ll
consider all the interrelated challenges and trade-offs and ultimately work
towards optimal outcomes for energy consumers.

We bring together eight activities required to deliver the plans, markets and
operations of the energy system of today and the future. Bringing these
activities together in one organisation encourages holistic thinking on the most
cost-efficient and sustainable solutions to the needs of our customers.

ABOUT NESO

NESO is the National Energy System Operator for Great Britain. We move power
around Great Britain to keep homes and businesses supplied with the energy they
need 24/7, 365 days a year. This is the first time in Great Britain that one
organisation will plan and operate the whole energy system.

COULD YOU KEEP GREAT BRITAIN'S LIGHTS ON?

To give you some small insight into our world at NESO, we’ve developed a game
where you can attempt to balance the grid, keeping it stable while facing some
