CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — Childcare can take months to find and it is expensive.

However, parents at Mercedes-Benz Vans Charleston are lucky enough to work for a
company that will help pay for that childcare.

Working parents view the benefit as a step toward accessibility. They don't have
to worry about their child being cared for while working.

"As a mother of two children under the age of 12 who are both in daycare, having
that stipend of up to $250 a month is crucial in helping not just myself, but
our team members," said Lakashia Johnson, a Mercedes-Benz Vans Charleston
communication leader.

Childcare in South Carolina can cost $600 a month or more.

"If I'd have had something like this when I had both of my kids, the anxiety I
had going back to work would've been much less than what it was," Johnson said.

Mercedes-Benz Vans Charleston said its new childcare benefit should help current
employees with work-life balance while also attracting future employees.

"We know that childcare is a barrier to work," said Matt Hamrick, Mercedes-Benz
Vans head of human resources. "In addition to this childcare benefit, we are now
also offering for new moms and dads expanded family leave, paid family leave and
transportation options."

Mercedes-Benz Vans Charleston offers childcare stipend to aid employee work-life
balance (WCIV)

It's a benefit many competitors don't currently offer.

"We feel like programs like this not only help our team members, but they can
help the community as a whole," Johnson said. "It could open avenues for
childcare centers to reopen or stay open."

Through the TOOTRis app, employees can find childcare with 350 providers in the
greater Charleston area.

"We found every licensed childcare provider we could find nationwide, and we
gave them home on this childcare platform that's easy to search your city, zip
code, to find resources that are in your community," said Jeff McAdam, TOOTRis'
communication director.

The new childcare benefit at Mercedes-Benz Vans Charleston became available for
staff members at the beginning of March. it will stay available indefinitely for
parents with children under 12.
