UNIFIED POLICE DEPARTMENT NEWS


MIDVALE, UT – SHOTS FIRED AT POLICE.

 * February 21, 2022

At about 1:30 PM (MST) today, Feb. 21, a male received an incorrect order in the
drive-thru at the McDonald’s located at 425 W. 7200 S in Midvale. In response to
incorrect order, the male brandished a firearm at the employees. The employees
asked the male pull to the front of the store while they corrected the order. At
this time, they called 911 and Unified Police responded.

Officers approached the vehicle, issuing several verbal commands to the male to
exit the vehicle, he did not cooperate. Officers opened the vehicle door and
pulled the male from the car. While taking the male into custody, an officer
turned back toward the vehicle and saw a gun pointing out from the rear window.
The officer vocalized to other officers there was a gun while swiping the gun to
the side as a round was fired from the gun. The officer recognized the young age
of the individual with the firearm and yelled out “kid” to the other officers.

The child who fired the weapon is four years old and was in the backseat of the
car with a three-year-old sibling. Information collected during this ongoing
investigation indicates that the father of the child told the child to shoot at
the police. The father is in custody and being interviewed as of this writing.

Sheriff Rosie Rivera said, “This is a sad day for law enforcement and our
community. To have an adult think it is okay to encourage a four-year-old to
pull a firearm and shoot at police illustrates how out of hand the campaign
against police has gotten. This needs to stop and we need to come together as a
community to find solutions to the challenges we face in our neighborhoods.
Officers are here to protect and serve and we are beyond belief that something
like could happen.”

The officer received minor injury to his arm, there were no other injuries.

TWO ARRESTS RELATED TO THE KIDNAPPING OF CONZUELO “NICOLE” SOLORIO-ROMERO

 * February 16, 2021

Kearns, UT – Unified Police Department has made two arrests related to the
kidnapping of Conzuelo “Nicole” Solorio-Romero have been made.

Orlando Esiesa Tobar, age 29 Jorge Rafael Medina Reyes, age 21


Both men have been booked into the Salt Lake County Adult Detention Center on
charges of aggravated kidnapping and aggravated murder.

Nicole was forcibly taken from her residence in a 2010 green Toyota Camry on
Feb. 6 around 2:30 pm in Kearns. She was transported to a secondary location in
West Valley City where evidence indicates that she was shot and mortally
wounded. Evidence also indicates that Nicole’s body was transported from the
secondary location in a white pickup truck with a snowplow on the front; the
truck has been recovered. A firearm of the same caliber as the bullet was
recovered from the West Valley City location was recovered at the residence of
the suspects.

Due to the ongoing nature of this investigation, we are unable to provide any
additional details. We continue to work with our law enforcement partners and
the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office. Additional information may be
released when formal charges are filed.

"I want to thank our investigators who have been working diligently day and
night to bring answers to Nicole’s family. Our hearts are with the family during
this difficult time,” said Sheriff Rosie Rivera.

Office, Utah Division of Child and Family Services, Utah State Crime Lab, West
Valley City Police Department, and Wyoming law enforcement agencies the who have
been critical partners in this investigation.



UPD SEEKS ASSISTANCE IN KIDNAPPING

 * February 9, 2021

Kearns, UT – Unified Police is seeking the public’s assistance in a Kidnapping.

On Saturday, February 6, 2021 at approximately 2:30 PM Conzuelo “Nicole”
Solorio-Romero age 25 was forcibly taken from her residence in Kearns.
Investigation led detectives to a second residence. At this residence evidence
was located indicating Nicole had been shot and has been seriously injured.

We are seeking information from anyone who may have seen or heard anything from
the Kearns residence on Saturday. In addition, any information on the suspects,
and vehicles.

The suspect is a male Hispanic who was wearing a white sweatshirt at the time of
the abduction. The driver of the vehicle is unknown.

Around 2010 Toyota Camry Green 4-door White pick-up truck with a red or orange
plow on the front. It was pulling a flatbed trailer containing landscape
equipment and trash.


Photos of Nicole, the Camry at the scene, and video of the abduction are
included below.

Assisting in this investigation are the FBI, HSI, WVCPD, US Marshall’s Office,
and Wyoming law enforcement.

Sheriff Rivera will be available for sound today between 1:30 – 2:30 PM at the
Government Center 2001 S. State St. corridor outside of the Sheriff’s Office
S2700.



FEBRUARY 6, 2021 MILLCREEK CANYON AVALANCHE UPDATE

 * February 7, 2021

On Feb. 6 at 11:40 am MST, the Unified Police Department (UPD) was notified of
an avalanche in the Wilson Glade area of Millcreek Canyon. With initial reports
of five skiers buried, UPD activated Salt Lake County Search and Rescue.
Rescuers both hiked and were hoisted into the area to begin the search and
rescue operation.

We now know that there were two groups skiing in the area when the avalanche was
triggered, a group of five skiers and a group of three skiers. The avalanche
swept all eight away. Four surviving members of the groups were able to dig
themselves and the others out. All eight skiers were well prepared and had the
necessary equipment for the conditions.

The four survivors, all males aged 23-38, were hoisted off the mountain by Life
Flight Helicopters and crews. None of them had life threatening injuries and
were not hospitalized. Due to unstable conditions, efforts to recover the four
deceased skiers were resumed Sunday morning.

“Our hearts go out to loved ones of the skiers lost in Saturday’s avalanche,”
said Sheriff Rosie Rivera.

Sarah Moughamian, age 29, of Sandy, UT

Louis Holian, age 26, of Salt Lake City, UT

StephanieHopkins, age 26, of Salt Lake City, UT

Thomas Louis Steinbrecher, age 23, of Salt Lake City, UT

“The Salt Lake County Search and Rescue Team is made up of highly trained
volunteers that put themselves at risk to save others. They perform critical,
live saving operations, like this one, year-round,” said Sheriff Rosie Rivera.

INFORMATION ABOUT SCAMS

 * November 10, 2020

There has been an increase in scammers posing as law enforcement, specifically
as officers or employees of Unified Police, often using the name of an actual
employee.



Scammers will often use the threat of arrest to demand that the victim purchase
VISA, iTunes, Google Play, or other gift cards and then convince the victim to
"meet" them at a police department. The scammer will then create an excuse to
justify the victim giving the gift card information to the scammer over the
phone, as opposed to going into the building.

Another method that scammers will utilize is to attempt to extort the victim by
posing as an acquaintance or the relative of an acquaintance and fabricating a
dispute, in many cases involving photos or knowledge of inappropriate contact
between the victim and the acquaintance. The scammer will then threaten to
involve the police, and will pose as an officer threatening the arrest of the
victim. This has compelled several victims to make the situation "go away" by
paying the scammer in the form of gift cards.

This is a text message from a scammer attempting to extort the victim by
threatening to involve police. And next to it is a voicemail transcription of a
voicemail from the scammer, pretending to be a police officer, in an attempt to
coerce the victim.

If you are ever contacted by someone claiming to be in law enforcement, and
think this may be a scam, ask for the person's name and agency, and then hang
up. Using public sources, not a number they might give you, call the police
department they claim to work for, and ask for that officer.

ARREST MADE IN 2010 SHERRY BLACK HOMICIDE CASE

 * October 10, 2020

The Unified Police Department (UPD) has arrested a suspect in the Sherry Black
case.

The case will be screened with Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office (DA)
early next week.

At approximately 1:43 p.m. on Nov. 5, 2010 Ms. Black, age 64, was found beaten
and stabbed to death in her business, B&W Billiards & Books located at 3466 S
700 E in South Salt Lake. South Salt Lake Police Department (SSLPD) initiated a
homicide investigation, with no signs of robbery or motive the investigation
eventually went cold.

SSLPD invited UPD’s Cold Case Unit to support their continued investigation in
2013 and UPD became the lead investigating agency in 2018. During this time our
agencies collaborated to review the evidence, find new leads, and interview
witnesses. The diligent work of the detectives from both agencies over the last
ten years has resulted in today’s arrest.

Sheriff Rivers thanks the detectives, investigators, and many others from UPD,
SSLPD, DA, the Utah Crime Lab, and Parabon Nanolabs for working together in
common pursuit of justice for the Black family. Solving cold cases like this one
is possible, in part, due to technological advancements.







UPDATE 10.1.2020 - TERRAN BUTLER LOCATED / AMBER ALERT CANCELLED

MISSING CHILD 9.26.2020 TERRAN BUTLER.

The Amber Alert for Terran Butler has been cancelled. He was located and has
been reunited with his custodial parent.



On September 26, 2020, Terran Butler 06/11/2014 was on a court supervised visit
with his biological mother Emily Jolley. When the father attempted to pick up
Terran from the visit, Emily had taken Terran from the residence without
consent. Terran was last seen in the area of Millcreek with Emily Jolley.

Emily drives a blue 2008 Toyota Prius, Utah Plate E847GT. Emily was last seen in
the area of Millcreek with Terran with an unknown direction of travel or
location. Emily has ties to Washington State and may be traveling to Washington
with Terran

Terran Butler: 6-year-old Caucasian male, brown eyes, blonde hair Blue shirt,
black gym shorts, black and blue hiking boots.
Emily Jolley: 43-year-old Caucasian female, 5-8, 140lbs, Brown hair, Blue eyes







UNIFIED, WEST VALLEY, AND MURRAY PD SEEK HELP IN IDENTIFYING ROBBERY SUSPECT.

 * JULY 14, 2020

Salt Lake County, UT, Three EZ Pawn stores have been victims of armed robberies
in the county in the last week.



The first robbery occurred on July 6th at 3:35PM in Murray at 80 East 4500
South. The male suspect entered the store and brandished a weapon and fired
three rounds before leaving. The second robbery occurred on July 12th at 3:52
hours in Midvale at 50 West 7200 South. The male suspect entered the store and
brandished a weapon and fired one round before leaving the store. The third
robbery occurred on July 13th at 10:49 AM in West Valley City at 3105 West 3500
South. The male suspect entered the store and brandished a weapon but did not
fire any shots before leaving. The male ordered everyone in the store to get on
the ground when he entered the store during all three robberies.

The male wore an Infamous Modelo shirt with a female on the front in between two
cars and a bandana covering her nose and mouth in the robberies on the 12th and
13th . He also carried in a black bag as he entered the stores. He appears to
have darker skin, brown curly hair, a tattoo on his left forearm and a tattoo on
the back of his neck. He is considered armed and dangerous. Photos of the
suspect and vehicle used in the Midvale robbery are attached.

Sheriff Rosie Rivera addresses enforcement of

The Salt Lake County Health Department's "Stay Home, Stay Safe" Public Health
Order which took effect on March 30, 2020 at 12:01 AM.

Key points regarding enforcement include the following:

• The order is issued by Salt Lake County and is enforceable just like any other
law.

• The Unified Police and Sheriff's Office will respond to reports of violators
or observed behavior that violate the order.

• Officers will work with the public to educate, and will emphasize the need to
comply with the order, before enforcement action is taken.

• Refusal to comply with the order is a criminal offense, and violators may be
subject to a misdemeanor citation.

• The Unified Police and Sheriff's Office will NOT conduct traffic stops,
pedestrian stops, or set up check points for the purpose of enforcing this
order.

$5,000 REWARD - COLD CASE

 * Oct 28, 2019

A $5,000 reward is being offered to anyone with information leading to the
arrest and conviction of the person responsible for the death of Jason Royter.

The body of Jason Royter, 33, was found in his house, 7383 W. Paine Road (3745
South) on August 6, 2005. His body was discovered by his live-in girlfriend
Tammy Martinez who came home about 1:30 a.m. When officers arrived they saw
signs of a struggle in the home. There were no signs of forced entry, so Royter
may have let the suspect in before the altercation. He received multiple stab
wounds and bled to death.

MISSING PERSON / RUNAWAY

UPD Missing Person's Unit is looking for information on a missing juvenile,
Ariana Ortiz-Calderon. She is 16 years old and is believed to be in the Herriman
or West Valley areas.

UPDATE TO TAYLORSVILLE DRIVE-BY SHOOTINGS SEPT 1 & SEPT 3

 * Sept 5, 2019

Two arrests made related to the shootings in Taylorsville on Sept 1 and Sept 3
On Tuesday, September 4, through exhaustive investigative efforts, detectives
with Unified Police Department’s Taylorsville precinct Street Crimes Unit
arrested two individuals suspected in the drive-by shootings which occurred on
Chantelle Dr. in Taylorsville on the nights of September 1 and again on
September 3. Detectives developed information regarding a vehicle that was
involved and located the vehicle in Midvale on September 4. After establishing
surveillance on the vehicle, a traffic stop was conducted at which time a stolen
handgun was thrown from the passenger side of the vehicle. The occupants were
safely taken into custody. A search warrant was secured for the vehicle, and a
second stolen handgun was located inside the vehicle. Further information was
developed during the investigation, and a search warrant was secured for a home
in Sandy. During the execution of that search warrant, additional firearms were
found, as well as ammunition and drugs. The calibers of the firearms found in
the vehicle and at the residence were consistent with weapons used the night of
September 3. Two of the handguns recovered were reported stolen from a gun range
in Sandy on September 4. Two individuals were arrested and booked on the
following felony charges:

Edward Peralta-Moran, 19-year-old
Felony Discharge of a Firearm
Possession of a Dangerous Weapon by a Restricted Person
Theft by Receiving Stolen Property
Violation of Probation or Parole

Ramon Avila, 21-year-old
Felony Discharge of a Firearm
Theft by Receiving Stolen Property

The investigation is still ongoing. Formal charges are pending review with the
district attorney’s office.


MISSING-ENDANGERED PERSON

 * July 13 2019

***UPDATE*** – Bryan Royal has been located.

Bryan Royal – We need your help locating a missing-endangered man. Bryan Royal
age 46, White, Male 5’5, 190 lbs. Straw/blond hair, blue eyes
Clothing: Blue Jeans, Black Shirt with White Stripes
Bryan was transported from Wasatch Rehab (3520 S Highland Drive) to Liberty
Dialysis at 11:00 on July 12, 2019. Bryan was scheduled to be picked up from
dialysis at 16:15 by Wasatch Rehab. When the return transport was late, Bryan
left the dialysis center at 17:30 on foot in an unknown direction of travel.

UNIFIED POLICE NOTICE OF DUI CHECKPOINT

 * May 13 2019

LOCATION: 5900 S. Bangerter Highway (southbound), Taylorsville, UT
DATE: May 17, 2019
TIME: 9:00 pm – 2:00 am

Taylorsville, UT – In an effort to promote safe driving, the Unified Police
Department (UPD) will be conducting an Administrative DUI checkpoint on,
starting May 17,2019 from 9:00 pm until 2:00 am. Utah law requires that DUI
checkpoints be published in advance. With this public notice, UPD hopes Utah
drivers will make safe, alternative plans to prevent impaired driving.




ARRESTS IN KEARNS SHOOTING

 * May 10, 2018

Kearns, UT – On May 5, 2018 at approximately 6:30 am, Unified Police Department
(UPD) Kearns Precinct officers were dispatched to a shooting at 5363 West 5150
South. On arrival, they located a 29-year-old male who had sustained two gunshot
wounds; one in the neck and one in the lower abdomen area. The male was taken to
a local hospital in critical condition. He is currently still in the hospital
and improving in condition. Investigators believe the shooting was a result of
an argument over money owed by the victim.

Immediately following the shooting, it is believed the suspects fled the scene
in a Chrysler Sebring which was later recovered at 5332 South Crockett Drive.
The house was cleared and no suspects were located. The Sebring was held and
searched for evidence.

Over the last few days, UPD Detectives from Kearns, Violent Crime Unit (VCU),
Major Investigations Unit (MIU), and Metro Gang Unit (MGU) searched vigorously
for the people involved in the shooting. Through the investigation, two shooters
were identified: Robert Phillips and Dustin Blackner.

On the night of May 8, Blackner was located at 3084 South 200 East, South Salt
Lake, UT. He was observed leaving this house and was taken into custody without
incident.

On the afternoon of May 9, Phillips was located at 5423 Mountain Men Drive,
Kearns, UT. When it was confirmed that Phillips was inside this residence,
officers surrounded the home, made announcements, and gained compliance from
Phillips who surrendered peacefully.

Both have been booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on pending charges and
warrants unrelated to Saturday’s shooting.


LARGE SCALE MARIJUANA SEIZURE

 * May 4, 2018

Riverton, UT – On May 3, 2018 at approximately 10 pm, Unified Police Department
(UPD) Riverton Precinct officers received information of a large stash of
marijuana in the basement apartment of 12480 South 2240 West. Detectives, patrol
officers, and K9 from the DEA Metro Narcotics Task Force surrounded the home and
began announcements for any occupants to exit. The sole occupant of the
apartment, Elijah Webb, complied with officers and was detained.

A search warrant of the apartment was served in the early morning hours of May
4. The search yielded 110 lbs. of marijuana, having an estimated street value
$760,000, along with $46,750 cash. Elijah Webb was booked into the Salt Lake
County Jail under felony narcotics charges; Manufacturing of a Controlled
Substances (2nd degree felony) and Distribution of Controlled Substances (3rd
degree felony).

“We have zero tolerance for this type of illicit behavior in Riverton,” said
Mayor Trent Staggs. “It’s comforting to know the suspect was only in the city
for a few days before he was apprehended. This is yet another example of the
phenomenal work our Unified Police Department officers do for our community.”

At the request of the other residents of 12480 S 2240 W, we are requesting
privacy for them as they are not involved with and have no relation to Elijah
Webb.


BE THE FIRST HANDS / STOP THE BLEED KICKOFF

Herriman, UT – In partnership with the Jordan School District, the Unified Fire
Authority, and University of Utah Health / Trauma Services, the Unified Police
Department’s (UPD) Herriman Precinct is launching the “Be the First Hands / Stop
the Bleed” training program, aimed at stopping blood loss due to traumatic
injuries.

Stop the Bleed is a national awareness campaign and a call to action. Stop the
Bleed is intended to educate and encourage bystanders to become trained,
equipped, and empowered to help in a bleeding emergency before professional help
arrives.

No matter how rapid the arrival of professional emergency responders, bystanders
will always be first on the scene. A person who is bleeding can die from blood
loss within five minutes, therefore it is important to quickly stop the blood
loss. Those nearest to someone with life threatening injuries are best
positioned to provide first care. According to a recent National Academies of
Science study, trauma is the leading cause of death for Americans under age 46.

Each year the Footprinter's Association (a service organization made up of law
enforcement officials and community leaders) sponsors a banquet honoring the
most outstanding law enforcement students in nine area high schools of the
Jordan, Canyons and Granite Schools Districts. Law Enforcement service for these
schools is provided by the Unified Police Department. These students are
recognized for their outstanding academic accomplishments and their desire to
pursue law enforcement as a career path. Sheriff Rosie Rivera will present each
student with a plaque of achievement and address the audience. Students,
parents, Unified Police and school district officials will be in attendance.

The Salt Lake Footprinter's Chapter 3 will also present an award to the Law
Enforcement Officer of the Year chosen by their organization.

The Unified Police School Resource Program (formerly the Sheriff’s Assisting
Youth Unit) began in September of 1975 and has become a valuable and integral
part of the Unified Police Department’s crime prevention efforts. The SRO’s are
assigned to Cyprus, Kearns, Olympus, Skyline, Taylorsville, Hillcrest, Riverton,
Herriman and Providence Hall High Schools. The officers teach vocational law
enforcement/criminal justice classes in the high schools and serve as a valuable
resource to the students and staff. They also handle criminal investigations in
their respective schools. The SRO has become a respected member of each high
school faculty and developed a rapport with the students from elementary school
through high school.

It is with deep sadness Sheriff Rosie Rivera and the Office of the Sheriff
learned of the passing of Salt Lake County Councilman Sam Granato. Sam served
the community throughout his life but is known for his current service as a
member of the Salt Lake County Council representing District 4. Sam is also
known for his lifelong dedication to his family business as a purveyor for
authentic Italian and Mediterranean food. Sam’s success came from his strong
work ethic and a belief that customer service is what matters most. Sam brought
that spirit in his approach as a Salt Lake County Councilman.

Sam was a devout supporter of law enforcement and Sheriff Rosie Rivera revered
Sam as a partner and huge advocate for the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
Although Sheriff Rivera worked closely with Sam, she also considers Sam to be a
true friend. Sheriff Rivera feels the citizens and employees of Salt Lake County
lost a great man. Sheriff Rivera admired Sam’s commitment to continue to work
for the citizens he represented even through his battle to overcome cancer.
Sheriff Rivera and the Office of the Sheriff wish Sam’s family well as they
grieve the loss of a great man.


ANNOUNCING THE RELEASE OF THE “NOT FUNNY” VIDEO

The Media Services Unit of the Unified Police Department of Greater Salt Lake
has created and produced an educational video for parents and students on school
safety. Our goal was to show the consequences of making a threat to a school
even if the threats were intended to be a joke or “funny” by a student.

The Media Services Unit in collaboration with Granite School District produced
this short but informational video to educate the public. We would like to
recognize and thank the Kearns High School administration for the use of their
school. We would also like to thank the local actors and students who
volunteered their time and talents to this very important project.


UNIFIED POLICE OFFICER INVOLVED CRITICAL INCIDENT

 * April 17, 2018

Magna, UT – At approximately 3 am this morning, Valley Emergency Communications
Center (VECC) received a 911 call from an agitated male. The caller stated,
“Tell your officers to back off, or I will shove this knife through her throat”.
The unknown male on the line also requested to speak to a hostage negotiator.
VECC transferred the call to the Unified Police Department (UPD) Dispatch
Center.

Not knowing who made the call, or if the threat was legitimate, and having no
officers in the vicinity, UPD Millcreek officers were dispatched to the area of
3698 South 900 East (location of the phone ping). Officers did not notice
anything out of the ordinary, other than a truck leaving the area. Officers were
able to get the license plate of the truck before it left.

At approximately 4 am, UPD received information that the West Valley City Police
Department (WVCPD) was in pursuit of the same truck that was observed leaving
Millcreek. The pursuit started at 5600 West 3100 South, continued west through
West Valley and into Magna. During the pursuit through Magna, WVCPD officers
deployed tire spikes to disable the truck and it eventually came to a stop at
2750 South 8400 West. A UPD Officer, who arrived to assist at the stop location,
approached the vehicle and fired at the male inside the cab of the truck.
Medical aid was rendered but the suspect passed away at the scene. The female
who was also inside the truck was not struck by gunfire. She was transported and
treated at a nearby hospital for injuries inflicted upon her by the male
subject.

The deceased male has been identified as 41-year-old Lonnie Marcel Bowen of Salt
Lake City, UT. The Officer Involved Critical Incident (OICI) protocol
investigation will be led by Salt Lake City Police Department.


VOLUNTEER CHAPLAINS NEEDED

is called to assist the department. The Chaplain Core consists of religious
ministers from churches throughout the Sale Lake County area. The Chaplain Core

SALT LAKE HONORARY COLONELS AND UNIFIED POLICE BOOK BOX EVENT

 * March 28, 2018

Salt Lake County, UT – In partnership with the Salt Lake Honorary Colonels, the
Unified Police Department (UPD) Youth Cadet Program have been collecting
children’s books to be distributed to all UPD precincts within Salt Lake County.

The books will be housed in what would appear to be a large mailbox. Each
precinct was challenged by Chief Deputy Shane Hudson to decorate the book box to
the best of their abilities, and later to be judged by the Salt Lake Honorary
Colonels.

The Colonels will vote and announce the winners on Wednesday March 28, at 11 am
inside the UPD / Sheriff’s Office Building, 3365 South 900 West. Members of the
media are invited to see all the finished book boxes to be displayed at UPD
Precincts. Sheriff Rivera and the Honorary Colonels will be available for the
media during this time.


WANTED: MIDVALE ROBBERY SUSPECT

 * March 21, 2018

Midvale, UT – On March 18, 2018, Unified Police Department (UPD) officers from
the Midvale Precinct were dispatched to a robbery that had just occurred at the
Phillips 66 located at 8370 South State Street in Midvale, Utah.

The lone suspect approached the clerk, pointed a firearm directly at her and
demanded cash. After obtaining the cash he fled the business. He was observed
getting into a dark colored sedan which looked like the bumper was falling off.
Detectives believe the vehicle to be a Honda Civic or similar. This vehicle was
last seen heading west on Princeton Avenue.

He is described as a Caucasian male mid 30’s, heavy set, short scruffy auburn
colored goatee or beard. He was wearing a camouflage jacket (possibly Newman
Construction on back), black gloves and khaki colored pants.

Detectives from the Unified Police Department Violent Crimes Unit and FBI
Violent Crimes Task Force are actively investigating this case. Anyone with

INFORMATION REGARDING MIDVALE KIDNAPPING

 * March 12, 2018

Midvale, UT – Over this last weekend, the Unified Police Department (UPD)
Midvale Precinct and Violent Crimes Unit (VCU) have been investigating a
kidnapping of a 30-year-old adult male, who had later escaped and called police.

On the night of March 10, UPD Midvale Precinct officers were called by the
victim who was reporting a theft of a security camera. The victim believed the
suspects to be the upstairs neighbors in the complex in which they all reside.
Police looked to question the upstairs neighbors, however they were not home.

Later in the evening, the victim spotted the suspects outside of their
apartment, having a smoke. Because of a past friendly relationship, the victim
went to speak with the suspects, hoping to straighten the situation. When the
victim went inside the suspects apartment, the door closed behind him and one of
the suspects grabbed and held him with a knife to his throat. The suspects
demanded the victim drop the theft case or else he would be killed. The victim
was held in the apartment by the group of three suspects and later forced into
an orange 2008 Cadillac CTS. While the car was driving, the victim was able to
unlock a back door and jump from the moving vehicle. Luckily, the victim escaped
with only minor injuries.

On the morning of March 11, police found the orange Cadillac at the Wasatch
Apartments in Midvale. All three suspects were taken into custody without
incident. The suspect’s vehicle was impounded and a search warrant for evidence
was served at the originating location (Marquette Drive). The suspects were
interviewed and later booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on charges of
Aggravated Robbery, Aggravated Assault, Aggravated Kidnapping, Theft, and
Threats.


KEARNS SCHOOL THREAT ARREST

 * February 26, 2018

Kearns, UT – On February 25, 2018, Unified Police Department (UPD) officers from
the Kearns Precinct were given information about potential threats of violence
aimed at a local school. A picture had been posted on social media site
Snapchat, which showed a rifle in the suspect’s lap and a warning to “not come
to school on Monday”.

UPD Officers immediately gathered information and coordinated with Granite
School District Police Department. Within an hour, the suspect was identified as
a student of Thomas Jefferson Junior High School. Officers then responded to the
student’s residence to interview him and his parents. It was determined that the
gun pictured was an Airsoft rifle, and there was no immediate threat to the
school. Based on the threat in the social media post, the student was charged
with Terroristic Threats, which is punishable as a third-degree felony (Utah
Code 76-5-107). He was left in the care of his parents and will await
administrative action by Granite School District.

It is the position of the Unified Police Department that all threats against
schools, regardless of the nature, will be treated as real and investigated
thoroughly. Sheriff Rosie Rivera, UPD Kearns Precinct members, and the Granite
School District Police Department will be available for media questions,
February 27, at 10:30 am inside the Unified Police Department auditorium.


MILLCREEK SHOOTING ARREST

 * February 16, 2018

Millcreek, UT / Kearns, UT – On February 9, 2018, Unified Police Department
(UPD) officers from the Millcreek Precinct were dispatched to a shooting at 3925
S. State St. Witnesses reported seeing and hearing several shots with a male
being struck by gunfire. The 18-year-old male victim arrived at Intermountain
Medical Center in Murray, UT with a non-life threatening gunshot to the leg.

Through investigation, it was determined that an argument had ensued between two
groups of associates, when one person produced a gun and started shooting. The
shooter was identified as 19-year-old Elhelbawy Adam Idrees of West Valley City,
UT.

On the night of February 15, 2018, a UPD Kearns Sergeant conducted a traffic
stop on a vehicle for speeding. The driver was immediately identified as the
shooting suspect. Idrees was taken into custody without incident. He was
interviewed by Violent Crime Unit detectives and booked into the Salt Lake
County Jail on four counts of attempted aggravated murder and three counts of
felony discharge of a firearm.

Jon M. Huntsman Sr. was very dear to my heart as he was my biggest supporter and
mentor. I am deeply saddened to hear of his passing. He was kind and devoted to
helping others. He was a true example of integrity, honor and faith. I have
cherished his advice and wisdom throughout the years. I feel blessed that he was
able to attend my swearing in as Sheriff, it was apparent that he was not
feeling well but he made it a priority to be there. I will always be grateful
for his friendship and support. I am so blessed to have known him. My love and
prayers go out to Karen, Markie and all the Huntsman family.
