Engineers have developed a tamper-proof ID tag, based on terahertz waves, that
can reveal with near-perfect accuracy whether an item is real or fake. The key
is in the glue on the back of the tag.

Aided by machine learning, researchers developed a method to remotely map crop
types in low- or middle-income countries where agricultural data are sparse. The
work fills “a longstanding gap in knowledge about what is grown around the

As a mechanical engineer at MIT Lincoln Laboratory, Phillip Daniel ’13, SM ’15,
PhD ’22 conducts research for the US Department of Defense that involves
exploring the deepest oceans and the farthest skies.

RESEARCH NEWS

A new test could predict how patients will respond to a mechanical pump after a
heart attack. This could help doctors prevent the heart’s right and left
ventricles from becoming imbalanced, a dangerous condition affecting many
patients who experience cardiogenic shock.
