Matt Detsa-AmnIncredible album. But I'm going to have to disagree with Pete on
the new mix. It's the original mix all the way for me!

2 years ago 14

Dan Mullini prefer the original mix. the new one might sound technically better
but it no longer sounds like Quadrophenia: missing sound effects, no delay on
Roger's voice, louder vocals. for me it lost some of it's fighting edge that
made the original so exciting.

Benn KempsterI remember being at Uni in Brighton that year and was at the HMV
door for them opening at 9am. I'd asked to have the first copy reserved for me
and they brought out the first box of deliveries and let me open it and take the
first copy out. I rushed back to Halls and played it for 24 hours straight. I'd
only had a tape copy from my dad's workmate until then which had served me well.
I'd been collecting bootlegs for 3 years up to then but really wanted my own
first copy. I splashed out on a portable CD player which I absolutely couldn't
afford and took Quadrophenia off under the Pier. I imagined Pete there in '65. I
imagined the movie re-creation. I doubted myself and knew I had no plan -
professional sport wasn't going to be and I'd hung everything on it. I Was The
Sea as I laid there waiting for it to wash over me, but surely Jimmy swam. Jimmy
made it and so did I. Sort of.

Eddie GallowaySaw them in Dallas and Houston on that tour. Pete was drunk out of
his mind both nights. What happened in Cincinatti a few months earlier was still
weighing on him. And seeing them for the first time without Keith on drums was
even more shocking than I thought it would be. They were such a far cry from the
fire breathing monster they were in the Spring of '76, when I had last seen them
at several gigs -- the tour that The Ox later said was the best Keith ever
played. But much later, when Pete got back in shape, and Zak was on drums, they
became monsters again, though still not what they were when Keith was in his
prime.

ready to forget it. Then I heard they were carrying on and I thought "f#ck yeah!
That's life! Carrying on!" At first I thought "damn they are off!" but hung with
it. By the last few songs they were cooking and the encore? I cried from
happiness! I'm not finding a review but really "Who cares?"

Edward MurphyUnfortunately, Keith tried to make a Harry Nilsson/Ringo sounding
record. They were making this kind of awful 70s music at this time. Predictably,
the results are terrible.

Jim GroganHey, guess what. This album is great. Start to finish. Stop pretending
you can’t listen to it from start to finish without skipping a track. It’s a
fact, Sorry for the truthbomb

Dave CoenFairly accurate, Daily Records best song on that album by far.

2 years ago 2

Jon DeNunzioEvery review is subjective, and we have the benefit of time, but
it’s pretty surprising that a review of Face Dances would not mention “You
Better You Bet” (other than a little joke in the last line).

2 years ago 2

Kevin WortleyYou Better You Bet & Don’t Let Go The Coat (at a push) are the
highlights of a poor album by Who standards (think Quadrophenia for a stunning
piece of music) and then Face Dances wasn’t much better! Pete’s solo albums
contained much punchier songs in fairness, play them a fair bit especially Empty
Glass

2 years ago 1

Tom LawtonI remember this review really well particularly since parts of it
illuminated things about the Who that I hadn't really caught before ("..the
music drops down... Daltrey in his most wistful voice" - I recall that sentence
just about every time that dynamic is displayed in one of their songs.) Pretty
accurate across the board though I think Cache Cache rivals How Can You Do It
for sheer unlistenableness.

2 years ago 1

Alex NejakoI wonder if people would write the same reviews if they knew the band
only had one album left before a huge hiatus. Back in the 80s a lot of reviewers
thought they were better than the bands . They don't control what i listen to

Michael GreenanAgree with a lot of this (especially his opinion on the Entwistle
songs). Don’t agree on Don’t let go of the coat being a “wings imitation”. Still
a good album overall.

2 years ago 1

Dave Sylvestre“You Better You Bet” was a radio hit and it’s fun song. “Another
Tricky Day” was not as catchy - or at least not catchy enough to be a hit but
was even better. But the rest of the album fell flat.

Thomas HeitjanI had an LP copy back then, and I used to play it at 45rpm just to
give it some life.

Chuck Strayer“You” is the best track on the album..

Pearce BannonDead right about “How Can You Do It Alone” and the “generally bland
sound.”

2 years ago 1

Mike SelkAlways felt that if you took the five or so great songs on “Empty
Glass”, the four or so good Townshend songs on “Face Dances” (I’d pick “YBYB”,
“Don’t Let Go The Coat”, “Another Tricky Day” and “How Can You Do It Alone”) and
John’s two songs from the same album, and you have a classic Who album. But by
that point, Townshend basically stopped giving a shit about the Who.

Jamey CativeraThat album is VERY dated sounding. There are a few good songs on
it but a lot of 80's fluff filler.

2 years ago 3

Harry WarburgIt’s funny that a lot of bands went with this kind of style in this
era because it was “modern” but now when you listen back this kind of production
is a little dated. Haven’t listened to this record though. What is the general
consensus.
