Cassandra Crothers-Swensson (Monash Health)

Benefits of Hosting Student Placements

Hi, my name’s Cassandra Crothers-Swensson and I’m a Health Promotion
Practitioner at Monash Health and over seven years have worked on many different
portfolios.

When I first started in the health promotion industry, I was successful in
getting a graduate position which then led to a full-time ongoing role.  In my
interview, I was able to speak about my own personal placement experience and so
because of this, I feel very strongly about giving back and supporting students
in gaining adequate and varied on-the-ground experience in the workforce.  This
will support them in getting a job after university. This also supports my own
industry through up-skilling of future employees on practices they’ll need in
the workforce, so that they are job ready. Having students on placement also
provides me with the opportunity to improve my leadership skills through the
supervision of others. This can now go on my  CV and I can use it as a talking
point in a job interview.

Students help us to complete projects that we don’t always have the resources
and capacity to do. I’m the Healthy Sports Clubs Project Lead and in the past
students have supported us in developing two integral health areas within the
pilot. This initiative has been very successful and is now being scaled and
shared with other community health services across Victoria.

Matin Ghayour Minaie (Meli)

Benefits of Hosting Student Placements

Meli is a leading community service organization committed to strengthening
community through supporting people in the Barwon region. We offer a unique
combination of about 100 programs to support people throughout their lifetime
from any childhood through to adolescence and adulthood. Our vision is to
provide a fair, safe and inclusive community where everyone can thrive,
including our staff and students on placement. Consistent with these
organizational values is our commitment to building connections and
collaboration with existing and new partners such as Deakin University where we
can work together and learn from each other through translating knowledge into
practice and vice versa.

I believe that partnerships are designed and developed to build organizational
capacity and to reduce service gaps. An important aspect of this partnership is
hosting students from different disciplines which provides us with an
opportunity to create a culture which is highly engaged with recent knowledge
and theoretical backgrounds for our interventions. Through supervising the
students our staff are practicing how to apply governance ensuring quality is
monitored at multiple levels within the teams and also other applying and
modelling active listening, effective collaborations and sharing of information
and ideas.

Hosting students inspires us to create personal change by building awareness for
different approaches to life and appreciating varying perspectives respecting
the unique needs of others. In celebrating individual differences in the
workplace. The student's enthusiasm and involvement in the project tasks such as
recruitment, developing materials and resources, designing and evaluating
interventions can be motivating for the team. And the positive outlooks and
different connections to the community can prove very helpful. Student placement
is a symbiotic relationship that benefit both Meli and Deakin University,
fostering mutual growth and learning. true collaboration we gained valuable
insights that inform our efforts to empower our communities and drive positive
change.
