https://api.whatsapp.com/send?text=*Ab%20Jenkins:%20Son%20of%20the%20Salt*nEXCERPT%20%E2%80%94%20Utah%E2%80%99s%20100%20square-mile%20Bonneville%20salt%20flats%20are%20an%20expansive%20wasteland%20that%20claimed%20the%20sanity%20and%20lives%20of%20many%20settlers%20during%20the%201800s.%20Creeping%20across%20the%20sparse,%20blinding%20whiteness%20of%20the%20flats%20at%20three%20miles%20per%20hour%20was%20a%20brutal,%20three-day%20ordeal%20for%20these%20early%20settlers.%20It%20was%20common%20for%20them%20to%20be%20driven%20mad%20by%20thirst%20or%20mirages.%20Being%20bogged%20down%20in%20the%20mud%20of%20the%20outlying%20areas%20of%20the%20flats%20caused%20the%20infamous%20Donner%20party%20to%20enter%20the%20Sierras%20too%20close%20to%20winter.%20They%20were%20left%20to%20freeze%20and%20starve%20to%20death%20in%20the%20mountains,%20ultimately%20resorting%20to%20cannibalism%20to%20survive.%20But%20the%20territory%20that%20was%20the%20bane%20of%20settlers%20was%20a%20boon%20for%20speedsters%20of%20the%20early%2020th%20century.%20Because%20it%20was%20a%20hotbed%20of%20bicycle%20and%20motorcycle%20racing,%20Salt%20Lake%20City%20was%20known%20as%20%E2%80%9Cthe%20birthplace%20of%20speed%E2%80%9D%20at%20the%20turn%20of%20the%20century.%20It%20was%20here%20that%20a%20young%20Mormon%20carpenter%20named%20David%20Abbot%20Jenkins%20was%20introduced%20to%20motorcycle%20racing.%20Known%20as%20%E2%80%9CAb,%E2%80%9D%20he%20competed%20in%201/2%20mile%20races%20on%20dirt%20tracks%20as%20well%20as%20in%20cross-country%20motorcycle%20races.%20A%20highway%20was%20put%20in%20through%20the%20salt%20flats%20in%201925.%20A%20friend%20who%20had%20worked%20on%20designing%20the%20road%20asked%20Jenkins%20if%20he%20would%20be%20willing%20to%20race%20an%20automobile%20down%20the%20new%20highway%20against%20the%20train%20as%20a%20part%20of%20the%20highway%E2%80%99s%20inaugural%20celebration.%20Jenkins%20accepted%20the%20challenge.%20Jenkins%20beat%20the%20train%20by%20five%20minutes.%20Jenkins%20was%20convinced%20that%20the%20area%20had%20enormous%20potential%20for%20racing.%20He%20set%20about%20championing%20Bonneville%20as%20the%20next%20great%20land%20speed%20track.%20However,%20the%20more%20established%20tracks%20were%20the%20preferred%20venues%20for%20most%20racers.%20Jenkins%20was%20far%20from%20the%20stereotype%20of%20a%20reckless,%20speed-crazed%20thrill-seeker.%20He%20never%20considered%20himself%20to%20be%20a%20rough%20and%20tumble%20daredevil.%20In%20fact,%20he%20was%20very%20much%20a%20mannerly%20gentleman-sportsman%20who%20consciously%20avoided%20all%20things%20crude%20and%20vulgar.%20Jenkins%20saw%20his%20races%20mainly%20as%20a%20test%20of%20his%20strength%20and%20fortitude,%20which%20he%20attributed%20to%20his%20dedication%20to%20restrained,%20modest%20Mormon%20living.%20%E2%80%9CI%20owe%20the%20maintenance%20of%20my%20endurance%20ability%20to%20the%20observance%20of%20the%20Word%20of%20Wisdom%20of%20the%20Mormon%20Church,%E2%80%9D%20said%20Jenkins,%20%E2%80%9Cwhich%20my%20good%20mother%20taught%20me%20as%20a%20boy.%20It%20proscribes%20the%20use%20of%20all%20forms%20of%20tobacco%20and%20liquor.%E2%80%9D%20His%20racing%20got%20the%20attention%20of%20the%20Pierce-Arrow%20automobile%20company,%20who%20invited%20him%20to%20come%20to%20their%20factory%20in%20Buffalo.%20Pierce-Arrow%20had%20developed%20a%2012-cylinder%20engine,%20but%20couldn%E2%80%99t%20get%20it%20to%20out-perform%20their%208-cylinder.%20Jenkins%20was%20asked%20to%20see%20what%20he%20could%20do%20to%20improve%20its%20performance.%20After%20a%20few%20weeks%20of%20tinkering,%20he%20raised%20the%20output%20of%20the%20engine%20from%20130%20horsepower%20to%20175%20horsepower.%20In%201932,%20Jenkins%20got%20the%20idea%20that%20running%20the%20powerful%20new%2012-cylinder%20on%20the%20salt%20flats%20for%20a%2024-hour%20endurance%20run%20would%20be%20perfect%20opportunity%20to%20show%20what%20both%20Bonneville%20and%20the%20engine%20were%20capable%20of.%20He%20told%20Pierce-Arrow%20officials%20that%20he%20would%20run%20the%20car%202,400%20miles%20in%20the%2024%20hours.%20They%20laughed%20at%20him.%20Undaunted,%20he%20set%20off%20to%20test%20the%2012-cylinder%20Pierce-Arrow%20in%20Utah%20with%20the%20car%20and%20six%20new%20tires%20as%20his%20only%20equipment.%20The%20whole%20set-up%20very%20rough%20and%20simple,%20but%20it%20would%20do%20the%20trick.%20With%20the%20help%20of%20friends,%20a%2010-mile%20circular%20course%20at%20Bonneville%20was%20marked%20off%20with%20stakes.%20The%20run%20was%20timed%20with%20stopwatches.%20There%20were%20no%20facilities%20or%20tents%20set%20up%20on%20the%20flats.%20A%20sheep%20wagon%20was%20towed%20onto%20the%20course%20to%20provide%20some%20shelter%20for%20the%20timers%20and%20crew.%20Pulling%20the%20fenders%20and%20windshield%20off%20the%20Pierce-Arrow,%20Jenkins%20simply%20smeared%20his%20face%20with%20grease%20to%20protect%20his%20skin%20from%20the%20sun,%20put%20on%20a%20pair%20of%20goggles,%20hopped%20into%20the%20car%20and%20raced%20onto%20the%20track.%20As%20he%20raced,%20the%20timers%20signaled%20his%20speed%20to%20him%20with%20large%20signs.%20For%20amusement,%20Jenkins%20wrote%20notes%20back%20to%20his%20crew%20on%20a%20notepad%20anchored%20in%20the%20middle%20of%20his%20steering%20wheel%20and%20then%20threw%20the%20missives%20to%20them%20as%20he%20thundered%20by%20at%20over%20100%20mph.%20He%20stopped%20to%20refuel%20every%20two%20hours,%20but%20he%20never%20left%20the%20driver%E2%80%99s%20seat%20of%20the%20car%20for%2024%20hours%20straight.%20When%20he%20finally%20got%20out%20of%20the%20car%20at%20the%20end%20of%20the%20run,%20he%20was%20stone%20deaf%20from%20the%20roar%20of%20the%20engine.%20Rather%20than%20running%20the%202,400%20miles%20he%20had%20promised%20the%20Pierce-Arrow%20people,%20Jenkins%20had%20run%202,710!%20His%20average%20speed%20for%20the%2024-hour%20period%20was%20112.916%20mph%E2%80%93very%20close%20to%20a%20new%20world%E2%80%99s%20record.%20In%201933,%20Jenkins%20arranged%20for%20his%20second%20endurance%20run%20on%20the%20salt,%20the%20first%20one%20that%20would%20officially%20go%20on%20the%20record.%20With%20a%20somewhat%20expanded%20base%20camp,%20Jenkins%20set%20out%20on%20another%20endurance%20race%20with%20the%20same%20Pierce-Arrow.%20Shortly%20after%20the%20race%20started,%20a%20violent%20storm%20erupted%20with%20winds%20gusting%20up%20to%2060%20miles%20an%20hour.%20Tents%20were%20folded%20to%20prevent%20them%20from%20blowing%20away%20and%20officials%20ran%20to%20their%20cars%20for%20shelter,%20but%20Jenkins%20kept%20racing.%20The%20torrents%20of%20wind%20and%20rain%20did%20little%20to%20slow%20his%20speed.%20After%20the%20last%20gas%20stop%20of%20the%20run,%20Jenkins%20took%20out%20a%20safety%20razor%20and%20shaved%20while%20circling%20the%20track%20at%20over%20125%20mph%20and%20with%20no%20windshield.%20When%20the%20race%20ended,%20he%20hopped%20out%20of%20the%20car,%20clean-shaven%20and%20presentable.%20In%20the%20summer%20of%20that%20year,%20England%E2%80%99s%20best%20land%20speed%20racers,%20Cobb,%20Campbell%20and%20Sir%20George%20Eyston%20came%20to%20Bonneville.%20Their%20attendance%20turned%20the%20salt%20flats%20into%20the%20mecca%20for%20land%20speed%20that%20it%20remains%20to%20this%20day.%20With%20the%20giants%20of%20speed%20competing,%20world%20speed%20records%20were%20set%20and%20broken%20several%20times%20over%20the%20passing%20days.%20When%20Cobb%E2%80%99s%20turn%20for%20an%20endurance%20run%20came%20up,%20Jenkins%20moved%20off%20the%20flats%20to%20allow%20him%20to%20race,%20but%20left%20all%20of%20his%20equipment%20for%20Cobb%20and%20his%20crew%20to%20use.%20At%20the%20one%20hour%20mark%20of%20his%20run,%20Cobb%20was%20on%20pace%20to%20clobber%20Jenkins%E2%80%99%20record.%20His%20average%20for%20the%20first%20hour%20was%20152.95%20mph,%20compared%20to%20Jenkins%E2%80%99%20142.62%20mph.%20He%20finished%20with%20a%2024-hour%20average%20speed%20of%20134.85%20mph,%20beating%20Jenkins%E2%80%99%20previous%20best%20of%20127.229%20mph.%20Jenkins%20had%20helped%20another%20driver%20defeat%20his%20own%20record%20and%20was%20happy%20to%20do%20it.%20It%20was%20all%20in%20the%20spirit%20of%20friendly,%20sporting%20competition%20and%20helped%20to%20establish%20Bonneville.%20%E2%80%9CCobb%20is%20a%20great%20fellow,%E2%80%9D%20said%20Jenkins,%20%E2%80%9Cand%20it%20was%20a%20pleasure%20to%20do%20everything%20in%20our%20power%20for%20him.%E2%80%9D%20In%201939,%20Jenkins%20brought%20a%20new%20car%20to%20the%20flats.%20It%20was%20the%20mammoth%20Mormon%20Meteor%20III.%20Built%20on%20a%20142-inch%20wheelbase%20with%20specially-made%2022-inch%20Firestone%20tires,%20it%20used%20the%20same%20Curtis%2012-cylinder%20airplane%20engine%20from%20the%20Mormon%20Meteor%20II.%20The%20car%20was%20nearly%2021%20feet%20long%20and%20was%20once%20again%20engineered%20by%20Augie%20Dusenberg.%20It%20was%20designed%20to%20run%20with%20two%20airplane%20engines,%20although%20only%20one%20was%20ever%20installed.%20It%20generated%20750%20hp%20at%202,000%20rpm%20and%20its%20top%20speed%20was%20275%20mph.%20It%20was%20estimated%20that%20it%20could%20run%20at%20400%20mph%20with%20front%20and%20rear%20supercharged%20engines%20installed.%20It%20had%20a%20112%20gallon%20gas%20tank%20and%20got%20three%20and%20a%20half%20miles%20to%20the%20gallon%20at%20200%20mph.%20Shortly%20afterwards,%20a%20movement%20was%20begun%20to%20elect%20Jenkins%20as%20the%20mayor%20of%20Salt%20Lake%20City.%20Although%20he%20entered%20the%20mayoral%20race%20late,%20never%20spent%20a%20cent%20of%20his%20own%20money%20and%20never%20made%20a%20single%20speech,%20he%20won%20the%20election.%20In%201940,%20the%20%E2%80%9CRacing%20Mayor%E2%80%9D%20made%20one%20of%20his%20most%20amazing%20runs%20at%20Bonneville.%20He%20had%20made%20many%2024-hour%20runs%20solo,%20but%20Jenkins%20now%20opted%20to%20use%20a%20relief%20driver.%20(He%20was,%20after%20all,%2057%20years%20old!)%20His%20relief%20driver%20was%20Cliff%20Bergere,%20who%20had%20raced%20at%20Indy%20and%20was%20also%20a%20motion%20picture%20stunt%20driver.%20On%20one%20lap%20of%20his%20run%20that%20year,%20Jenkins%20ran%20189.086%20mph.%20Over%20the%2024-hour%20run,%20Jenkins%20drove%2014%20hours%20and%20Bergere%20drove%20for%2010.%20When%20Bergere%20got%20out%20of%20the%20car%20after%20his%20shift,%20his%20hands%20were%20blistered%20from%20hanging%20on%20the%20steering%20wheel%20to%20keep%20the%20car%20on%20course.%20He%20told%20the%20Salt%20Lake%20Tribune,%20%E2%80%9CI%E2%80%99ll%20take%20my%20hat%20off%20to%20Jenkins.%20Any%20man%20who%20can%20drive%20a%20car%20for%20six%20solid%20hours%20on%20this%20course%20at%20the%20speed%20that%20Ab%20got%20out%20of%20the%20machine%20is%20a%20marvel.%20I%20have%20never%20seen%20anything%20like%20it.%E2%80%9D%20The%20Mormon%20Meteor%20III%20broke%2021%20records%20that%20year.%20His%20average%20of%20161.180%20mph%20for%20a%2024-hour%20run%20would%20not%20be%20broken%20for%20decades%20to%20come.%20Jenkins%20was%20a%20breed%20of%20consummate%20sportsman-gentleman%20whose%20polite%20and%20honorable%20conduct%20today%20seems%20as%20rare%20and%20quaint%20as%20the%20open-cockpit%20Pierce-Arrow%20that%20he%20first%20raced%20at%20Bonneville.%20He%20was%20extremely%20proud%20of%20having%20only%20been%20injured%20once%20during%20his%20many%20record%20runs.%20His%20endurance%20races%20at%20Bonneville%20put%20cars%20through%20exhaustive%20testing%20that%20helped%20to%20make%20production%20cars%20and%20tires%20safer%20for%20the%20everyday%20driver.%20Over%20the%20period%20of%20his%20racing%20career,%20Ab%20Jenkins%20held%20and%20broke%20more%20records%20than%20any%20other%20person%20in%20the%20history%20of%20sports.%20His%2024-hour%20record%20of%20a%20161.180%20mph%20average%20stood%20for%2050%20years,%20being%20beaten%20in%201990%20and%20only%20by%20a%20team%20of%20eight%20drivers.%20Jenkins%E2%80%99%20record%20for%20the%2048-hour%20endurance%20run%20still%20stands%20to%20this%20day.%20Excerpted%20from%20the%20print%20edition%20of%20Barracuda%20#11.nhttps://www.barracudamagazine.com/ab-jenkins-son-of-the-salt/

URL: https://api.whatsapp.com/send?text=*Korla%20Pandit%20Documentary*nIt%E2%80%99s%20hard%20to%20imagine%20a%20world%20without%20televisions.%20Today,%20TVs%20are%20not%20just%20ubiquitous,%20they%E2%80%99re%20everywhere.%20But%20in%20the%201940s,%20television%20was%20an%20expensive,%20new%20gadget%20that%20very%20few%20households%20owned.%20When%20the%20World%20Series%20was%20televised%20for%20the%20first%20time%20in%201947,%20only%2044,000%20TV%20sets%20were%20in%20use%20in%20the%20entire%20U.S.%20In%201948,%20only%20ten%20percent%20of%20Americans%20had%20ever%20even%20seen%20a%20television%20program.%20The%20only%20thing%20more%20scarce%20than%20TV%20sets%20was%20TV%20programming.%20Radio%20had%20been%20widely%20adopted%20for%20decades,%20with%20over%2040%20million%20sets%20in%20use%20in%20the%20late%201940s.%20So,%20the%20majority%20of%20talent%20and%20advertising%20money%20was%20still%20going%20into%20radio.%20In%20addition,%20television%20was%20so%20new%20that%20no%20one%20had%20really%20figured%20out%20what%20to%20do%20on%20TV%20yet.%20In%20just%20a%20few%20years,%20skyrocketing%20viewership%20would%20cause%20radio%20hits%20like%20Dragnet%20and%20Jack%20Benny%20to%20move%20to%20television.%20But%20in%20its%20infancy,%20many%20early%20TV%20shows%20weren%E2%80%99t%20much%20more%20than%20radio%20with%20a%20picture.%20The%20traditional%20radio%20music%20program%20was%20adapted%20to%20TV%20by%20simply%20showing%20the%20musicians%20playing%20their%20instruments.%20That%20was%20a%20TV%20show.%20And,%20it%20was%20pretty%20amazing%20stuff%20by%201940s%20standards.%20A%20music%20show%20that%20premiered%20during%20those%20pioneering%20days%20of%20television%20was%20Korla%20Pandit%E2%80%99s%20Adventures%20In%20Music.%20It%20was%20broadcast%20out%20of%20KTLA%20in%20Los%20Angeles%20beginning%20in%20February%201949%20and%20had%20more%20of%20a%20hook%20than%20your%20average%20music%20program.%20Pandit%20was%20Indian%20musical%20prodigy%20born%20in%20New%20Delhi.%20He%20played%20exotic%20themes%20on%20a%20Hammond%20organ%20or%20a%20piano%20(sometimes%20playing%20both%20instruments%20at%20once).%20As%20he%20played,%20the%20turban-clad%20musician%20gazed%20wistfully,%20directly%20into%20the%20camera.%20His%20only%20communication%20with%20the%20viewer%20was%20through%20his%20transe-like%20stare%20and%20what%20he%20called%20%E2%80%9Cthe%20universal%20language%20of%20music.%E2%80%9D%20He%20never%20spoke%20on%20the%20show.%20What%20at%20first%20glance%20seems%20like%20a%20simple%20music%20program%20became%20something%20wildly%20exotic%20and%20otherworldly.%20Pandit%E2%80%99s%20organ%20arrangements%20were%20accompanied%20by%20dark%20lighting,%20slow%20camera%20moves%20and%20close-ups%20of%20his%20eyes.%20The%20resulting%20show%20was%20all%20at%20once%20hypnotic,%20noir,%20exotic%20and%20surreal.%20He%20performed%20Adventures%20In%20Music%20live%20on%20the%20air,%20five%20days%20a%20week.%20Over%20900%20episodes%20were%20aired,%20but%20only%20a%20few%20survive%20to%20this%20day.%20Pandit%E2%80%99s%20show%20aired%20during%20TV%E2%80%99s%20boom%20years%20and%20he%20became%20wildly%20popular.%20In%201951,%20he%20played%20a%20two-hour%20concert%20at%20the%20Pasadena%20Civic%20Auditorium%20and%20was%20called%20back%20for%20three%20encores.%20A%20version%20of%20the%20show%20was%20syndicated%20to%20independent%20TV%20stations%20nationwide%20and%20he%20became%20a%20huge%20hit.%20He%20became%20friends%20with%20eastern%20religious%20figures%20and%20released%20dozens%20of%20albums.%20His%20music%20laid%20a%20foundation%20the%20exotica%20genre,%20made%20famous%20in%20the%201950s%20by%20musicians%20like%20Les%20Baxter,%20Martin%20Denny%20and%20Yma%20Sumac.%20But%20what%20seemed%20wild%20in%20the%20uptight%20days%20of%201948%20was%20considered%20laughably%20tame%20by%20the%20freaky-deaky%20standards%20of%201968.%20Pandit%20and%20other%20exotica%20musicians%20fell%20out%20of%20favor.%20Korla%20Pandit%E2%80%99s%20celebrity%20faded,%20but%20he%20worked%20as%20a%20musician%20and%20a%20music%20teacher,%20and%20continued%20releasing%20albums%20through%201971.%20He%20reclaimed%20some%20of%20his%20fame%20during%20the%20exotica%20/%20lounge%20revival%20of%20the%201990s,%20but%20passed%20away%20shortly%20after.%20Director%20John%20Turner%20has%20just%20finished%20a%20feature%20documentary%20about%20Pandit%E2%80%99s%20life%20called%20Korla.%20The%20documentary%20doesn%E2%80%99t%20just%20tell%20the%20lost%20story%20of%20a%20TV%20pioneer%20or%20an%20Indian%20musician.%20It%20also%20tells%20a%20story%20that%20turns%20out%20to%20be%20uniquely%20American.%20And%20it%E2%80%99s%20based%20on%20a%20secret%20that%20Pandit%20kept%20hidden%20even%20from%20his%20own%20family.%20It%E2%80%99s%20a%20secret%20that%20wasn%E2%80%99t%20discovered%20until%20years%20after%20his%20death.%20Korla%20%E2%80%93%20Trailer%20from%20Appleberry%20Pictures%20on%20Vimeo.nhttps://www.barracudamagazine.com/korla-pandit-godfather-of-exotica-music/
