TUESDAY MAGIC ITEM – URBAN MAGE’S UMBRELLA

27 August, 2024

Gollaon watched as the well-dressed people promenaded through the parks and
squares at the heart of the city.

Voddick watched as well, though the swirl of fashion was of much less interest
to him.  “It is a fine day, why are so many people carrying umbrellas?” he asked
after a while.

“They are more than just practical in case of rain, they are symbols of status
and, unless I miss my guess, many are enchanted as well.”

“Well, it must be a wealthy city to afford such,” said Voddick.  “Hopefull we
will see some of that when we see employment.

Urban Mage’s Umbrella

These umbrellas come in a wide variety of forms and styles, including everything
from heavy-duty lacquered bamboo to dainty parasols.  Some are decorated and
bejeweled, others plain, but all are over the highest quality.

TIME AND AGES THE SEA OF STARS – RPG BLOG CARNIVAL

24 August, 2024

I do my best to keep abreast of and contribute to each month’s RPG Blog
Carnival, this month’s theme is It Came From Beyond Time hosted on Seed of
Worlds.  Join in if you can.

World building is a funny thing, for the Sea of Stars, I wanted to leave room
(lots of room) for player contribution with a few rules, one of them is no time
travel to the past.  You can skip forward in time as much as you want, but you
cannot go back, while time travel is fun, its ability to disrupt the game is
amazing.  So, just thought it was best to lock that door before it became a
problem.  Now, you can use magic to look back into the past, it becomes
increasingly difficult the further back you go and by the time you reach the
Sundering, and the immense amounts of magical energy released by that event, it
is nearly impossible to see anything past that.  As seeing back beyond that
cataclysmic event has proven to be an impenetrable barrier, no one has
successfully seen the age before the Gods War, so it remains a period of myth
and speculation.

TUESDAY MAGIC ITEM – GHOSTLY GEESE GUARDIANS

20 August, 2024

Gollaon watched with amusement as Voddick placed carved wooden geese around the
perimeter of the camp.

“Are you sure those will work?” Gollaon asked.

“My aunt relied upon them in her days as a merchant-venturer,” replied Voddick.

“Well, as it is just us, additional protection would be welcome.”

Ghostly Geese Guardians

These figurines are made in sets of between seven and twelve figures, some are
carved wood, others decorated porcelain, but always of geese.

SUPERHEROES – ONCE UPON A TIME IN 1969 – SUMMER FUN (1969) 80-PAGE GIANT

19 August, 2024

Published after Issue 20 but is a liminal space when it comes to continuity, it
is part of continuity but when exactly it happens, it is kind of nebulous,
besides in summer.

Opening page: Caption at the top of the page: Where do our teen heroes go for a
break during the summer?  Why to Coney Island!  Where else?

Full page image: Our heroes in their bathing suits: 808 is wearing fancy swim
trunks (chosen for him by Vulpix) and dark Aviator sunglasses.  Horizon has a
full bathing suit and a red and yellow kite.  Roboto is wearing swim trunks over
his metal form, with sun tan oil (really waterproofing provided by the
Professor), Shadowfist has a form-fitting one-piece (not revealing nut more so
than her mother wanted).  Vulpix has a surfsuit, with a waterproofed utility
belt, and a red surfboard.  They stand on the beach with the Coney Island
boardwalk behind them.

TUESDAY MAGIC ITEM – MAQUAHUITL OF THE FAITHFUL

13 August, 2024

Gollaon watched the warriors practice with their warclubs, the edges of the
weapons glittering with shaped obsidian

Voddick was sitting and inspecting a shard of obsidian.  “They say this is
sharper than steel.”

“So I have heard, the warriors look fierce enough,” said Gollaon.

“And deeply dedicated to their faith, I am told.”

“Some variant of the Sun Cult, yes?”

“That is my understanding.”

Maquahuitl of the Faithful

These weapons are made of hardwood and edged with the finest obsidian.  Balanced
to be wielded in one hand and they can be used as a slashing weapon or as a
club.  The weapon is blessed and sacred to the followers of the Sun.

DARK FUTURE AHEAD 38 – NEWS FROM THE ‘NET OF A CYBERPUNK BENT

12 August, 2024

I scour the Matrix based-news of possible future trends and technology so that
you do not have to!

Looking at current trends and inventions that may move us to a better future or
a dark one.  People being people after all, either is possible.

It is a wide variety of topics this time out: ships, minerals, surveillance
technology, and so much more!

ECHO’S ADVICE FOR RUNNERS – WHY YOU NEED A RIGGER

12 August, 2024

[More in-character commentary about Shadowrun talking about various aspects of
being a successful Shadowrunner.  Obviously, this is just how I like to see the
game played -and GMed- but play the game you want to play.]

You are looking chipper, things went well, I am thinking.  Glad to give advice,
every thumb in the eye of the megas makes me smile.  Let’s grab some coffee and
a seat, you get a good view of the monorail passing from the deck.

Well, after a long road, I think we have hit the last piece of what you will
need for a team, a rigger.  Riggers are mostly just riggers, a few who are even
more focused on drones than the rest might go by something related to that:
drone-rigger, drone master, remote operator, whatever.  The important thing is
that they are skilled in piloting and using drones.  Showing my age, when I
started in this game, riggers were drivers first and drone jockeys second, now
it is the other way around.  Times change. Read the rest of this entry »

GENCON, 2024, DAYS 3 AND 4

9 August, 2024

Day 3 (Saturday, 3 August) another day, one of Howard’s friends, Byron, was in
town so I went to hang with them, visited the Fifty Years of Dungeons & Dragons
mini-museum which had books and more from every edition of D&D from Chainmail
the the new Player’s Handbook.  Then we had breakfast with them at Steak and
Shake (again, meh, maybe meh-, the chicken strips were over-breaded and bland).
Nice to see Byron, who I had met a few times before, but I had other missions
that I had to complete!  Dashing to the exhibit hall, I finally caught up with
Echo Chernik, who made the beautify Shadowrun scroll, of which I had acquired
two due to machinations, and had her sign both.  (Do I feel bad that I had
acquired 3% of the limited edition scrolls available at GenCon, denying them to
other fans?  No, no, I do not.)

Then back to my room for coffee and to grab my backpack.  Met up with Tali again
for another few games of Shadowfist, the decks working better this time, and
then, more Shadowrun!

Game Seven, 1pm, six players, overall, went pretty well.  Everyone had a good
time.  But the game at three, with only four players, one who was playing a
shame of their own creation, was great.  Even if the shaman’s player, who was
new, fell into option paralysis a few times with her spells.  But overall, just
a great game, I was sorry that the players got chased off immediately afterward.

Because the Catalyst Demo Team purchased dinner for us all!  It was from Boca de
Beppo, so Italianesque.   Amazingly, things were ahead of schedule!  So, I was
able to eat and talk with Howard and some of the other demo agents before
dashing off to my highlight of the Con! Read the rest of this entry »

GENCON, 2024, DAYS 1 AND 2

9 August, 2024

Day 1 (Tuesday, 1 August) early day, first Shadowrun session at 8am!  No
breakfast of coffee for me due to poor planning.

A little to my surprise we have five of the six people signed up for the session
showed up.  Now, I was expecting this to be more of a game that fed in from the
build-a-runner workshops and people who had already built characters for
Shadowrun Missions (SRM), the Shadowrun organized play system, but it was not to
be and I was forced to use the pre-generated characters for SRM in my intro game
and they are flat terrible for that purpose.  They are full character sheets
larded with bells, whistles,  and (in a few cases) ridiculous weaponry but no
explanation of anything, no background, no proper roleplaying hooks.
Essentially nothing to help a new player understand the character or the game.
Great for experienced players, much less useful for new players.  So, not only
did I have to teach new players the rules and explain the basics of the setting,
I had to do it with unfriendly character sheets and the information overload
they contained.  At least I had full control over the mission I ran, it was
self-created, and designed to be able to showcase the talents of the character,
whatever they ended up being, with a combat at the end so that people got to
experience that as well.

AUGUST SHADOWRUN CAMPAIGN NEWS AND A NEW SEATTLE SCREAM, ISSUE 100!

8 August, 2024

So, Shadowrun, yeah.  So much Shadowrun since my last report.  This coming
Saturday (Ten August) is our monthly learn-to-play game at Tyche’s Games not the
first Saturday as usual as I was at GenCon!  We usually play every first
Saturday (but in August and September it will be the second Saturday) and if you
are in the area come and join in, new players are very welcome.

Again July and early August was only CHing, no play for me.  I CHed three games
at home, one the live game at Tyche’s and two online missions, and at GenCon,
ten (!) sessions of First Taste, the intro Shadowrun game, two hours, explain
the setting, teach the rules, run the mission.  Intense, fun, tiring.  But I
will probably do it all again next year.

With this issue of Seattle Scream, I have managed one hundred issues!  It is
extremely satisfying to have managed to keep the Seattle Scream going, along
with the campaign over thirty-odd years, a move across the US, and everything.
Also, August, time for the MetroPlex Marketplace Meetup!  One of my favorite
settings for missions!
