TURN OFF THE LIGHTS AND LIGHT A CANDLE

(Note that the same question can be raised for a single family. If many families
are eating together, can each one light its own candles, or is there a limit?
Once a dining room is fully illuminated – with both electric lighting and
candles, is there any point to lighting more candles, making virtually no
practical difference? There is a second issue very relevant to a hotel setting.
However, if for whatever reason it is not possible to light where you will be
eating, you can light in any other room you plan to use that night to fulfill
your obligation. This second obligation is not typically fulfilled by lighting
candles, but just in seeing to it that each room has sufficient illumination,
even if, say, from an outside streetlight. But in addition, there is an
obligation to ensure all used areas of the house have sufficient lighting. The
first is the classic one to light candles on (or near) the Shabbat table, to
enhance the meal. This reason applies primarily to the Shabbat table
itself.īased on the above, there are two primary obligations. The Shabbat meal
is dignified and enhanced with good lighting (Rashi Shabbat 25b s.v. Every room
which will be in use over Shabbat must have sufficient lighting. Note that this
reason applies to the entire house, not only the Shabbat table. Further, if it
is so dark people will bump into things when they go about, there will be no
peace in the home (Talmud Shabbat 23b, Rambam Hil’ Chanukah 4:14). A house
without proper lighting is dark and gloomy. The most fundamental question of all
is why we are obligated to light Shabbat candles in the first place. The two
main issues we must examine are where one should light in a hotel, as well as
what one may light – considering that hotels typically do not allow guests to
light fires of any sort. Thus to answer, I will first discuss some of the
general rules and then we’ll look at the practical law. Lighting candles in a
hotel is actually a rather complex question, one which revolves around several
basic principles. Are there any other options? The Aish Rabbi Replies How can my
wife best fulfill the mitzvah of lighting candles? I didn’t ask the hotel yet,
but it’s very possible they will not allow us to light candles. You may find
that a candle has a presence of its own, a soothing energy that helps you just
BE, and not have to DO.We will be staying at a hotel for Shabbat in a few weeks.
Just this act of gazing and allowing your mind to relax and disengage from
having to “DO” will be therapeutic. Don’t worry about your mind wandering or
“trying” to meditate per se. The winter season, as the days grow shorter and
darker, is a perfect time to turn out the lights, light a candle, and sit
comfortably to gaze. When fire becomes our focus, the mind is able to relax and
process all of the information it has been taking in throughout the day.ĭuring
the winter months, candle focus can be a particularly powerful practice. These
images send a constant barrage of information to our brains, leaving little time
to process and reflect. Our days are filled with computer screens, smartphones,
and televisions. Whether you regularly practice meditation or not, the benefits
of sitting to gaze at a flame with the lights turned out sets your brain up for
a meditative state – without “doing” anything! This transformation happens
during just a few minutes of gazing at a flickering flame!

When we gaze at a flickering flame, our brain begins to shift out of our
constant beta brainwave state, which is associated with reactivity, thinking,
and alertness, into the alpha brainwave state, associated with a relaxed and
creative state of mind.Īlpha brainwaves then become theta brainwaves, which are
associated with meditation and intuition.Īs a result in this shift of
brainwaves, our mind becomes more relaxed, open, and receptive. Gazing at a lit
candle in a dark room is literally calming on the brain. If you shut the lights
for just a few minutes and light a candle to focus on, the results can be
transformative – for your body and soul. Only very recently in human history do
we have artificial light to serve us. Remember that for hundreds of years, fire
was our primary source of light and focus. While we need these lights much of
the day to work and function, we also need a break from them to preserve our
sense of peace, not to mention our eyes! The constant light from our multiple
screens and lighting around us creates a sensory overload to our brains. During
this busy time of the year, with screens lights galore, I invite you to turn off
the lights for a bit and light a candle for your soul!

LEE LOO FIFTH ELEMENT COSTUME

The piece mirrors Gaultier’s own collections of cut-out dresses during the 90s,
has been the inspiration for multiple designers, such as Alexander McQueen
Spring 1998, and has been the foundation for subversive designs today from
Ottolinger to fast fashion brands.

Milla Jovovich in her recent Vogue video about the film mentioned that they were
looking for something hospital gown-esque: “I said, ‘listen, what about
bandages?’” she mused. When Leeloo is first introduced, she is synthetically
created in a capsule and dressed in the most memorable piece from the film, the
bandage playsuit. The film follows Korben Dallas, an ex-special forces major and
current taxi driver who stumbles upon humanoid and “supreme being” Leeloo, and
they go on a mission to save the world, obviously. With a $90m budget, the most
expensive production outside the US at the time, 1,000 pieces were designed by
Gaultier for the film (including the costumes for all the extras – all of the
aliens were dressed in couture), amounting to over 10 fashion collections for
one movie. Fashion and pop culture Youtuber Mina Le has said about The Fifth
Element in one of her videos: “It’s always tempting to make the colour scheme
for a lot of sci-fi apocalyptic movies to be dark and grim and have the
characters appear as such, but adding colour just makes the action so much more
exciting.” Besson’s orange motif throughout the film, from Leeloo’s hair to
Korben Dallas’ vest brings another layer of cohesion. It’s fun to see a vibrant,
fun and cool conceptualisation of what people would wear in the 23rd century.
Looking back at its costume design created by French designer Jean Paul Gaultier
– best known for his cone bra famously worn by Madonna, cut-out bandage dresses
and French sailor-inspired uniforms – whose designs couldn’t be more current,
with Gaultier mesh tops going up for £500 on Depop, Bella Hadid and Dua Lipa
copping vintage JPG on their street style shots, and subversive basics taking
over the fashion industry.

Luc Besson’s 1997 film The Fifth Element celebrates its 25th birthday this
month, and its visuals and cinematography are still standing strong, injecting a
colourful life into the gloomy dystopian future.īut what really makes this film
stand out in cinematic history are its costumes that, a quarter-century on, are
more relevant than ever. Picture it, it’s the year 2263, humanity is still going
strong despite climate change, there’s flying cars, and the fashion is
out-of-this-world iconic.

KITARIA FABLES MAP

As the wildlife around Paw Village becomes increasingly aggressive, The Empire
has called upon you to investigate and defend its citizens. Real time combat,
exploration and dungeoneering sit alongside farming for provisions and the
crafting of weapons and armour, and forging new spells to increase your power.Ī
peaceful land where nature lives in harmony - until now. It’s not a game that
will leave a bad taste in your mouth, necessarily, but rather one that feels
like you’ve eaten nothing at all.Kitaria Fables is a delightfully cute action
adventure RPG with farming and crafting! Enter the cute world of Kitaria and
take on the quests of your animal neighbours as they face a rising tide of
darkness. While the art & music is good, everything else about Kitaria Fables is
bland. Sure, you can grow things to gain the good will of the townsfolk, or to
cook things to replenish your health, but it’s not all that interesting, and if
you like breaking boxes, you could probably just buy food throughout the entire
game and not feel the hit to your wallet. It’s just more side content in a game
that feels like it’s already got more side content than anything else. Most
places you go will necessitate walking through several areas, which of course
are full of monsters, and it wasn’t long before I was attempting to just stroll
right past pretty much everything because it was all taking far too long.Įven
the farming elements are nothing to get excited about. Add in the loading
screens between each and every small map segment, and it becomes very tedious,
very quickly. There are – very limited – teleportation shrines available, but
even the walk from the town shrine to your home to sleep feels like it takes an
eternity. I may have been able to get on board with the grindiness of it all,
except for one thing. This is the only way you get stronger, through gathering
materials and crafting. You don’t gain experience and level up like in
traditional RPGs – instead, you grind like mad for obscene amounts of materials
to craft weapons and armor and spells and anything else you could possibly thing
of. Absolutely everything about it feels like it exists solely to pad play time.
This would probably be a pretty great little game, except for one thing.

My answer was shooting fireballs at things, while retrieving relics from
dungeons and putting down the monster uprising. Very early on, you’re introduced
to a sage who gives you a book to read, and in this way, you discover you come
from a line of magic wielders, but since magic has been outlawed, what’s a small
kitty soldier to do? You were given this specific assignment because your
grandfather once lived in the town, so conveniently, you get to live in his
house.

You are a soldier tasked with protecting the citizenry of Paw Village from the
monsters that have started coming back, years after they were believed to have
been permanently defeated. Make no mistake, it is absolutely adorable, but man,
it’s a chore to play. I’m kind of a sucker for a game where you save the world,
but also take care of your home & your farm. Kitaria Fables is actually a game I
picked up during the most recent Steam Summer Sale, because it looked adorable
and like it’d be a great fit for the Steam Deck.

BEST RECORDER FOR CLASS LECTURES

Plus, you’ll have to adjust how you speak, monitoring if Docs is catching up.
You will need to edit the transcript as it’s prone to errors.

The downside of relying on this feature is the accuracy and the lack of a
seamless experience. Under Tools, select “Voice Typing.” Google will then create
text based on your audio. If you have a Google account, you should be able to
access Google Docs. Think of it as having your personal secretary. You can
transcribe any audio into text with Google Docs free service, whether it’s a
lecture or random thoughts that you want to keep track of. While Zoom
automatically opens the folder containing the audio file, it is ideal to know
where it is stored to retrieve it whenever you need to. In Zoom, only the host
can create a “Local Recording.” To record the session without waiting for your
professor’s file, you will need to ask the host to grant your permission.
There’s Google Classroom, Microsoft Teams, and you’ve likely used Zoom for
communication.Ĭompared to other video conferencing platforms, Zoom gives control
to the host when recording. Most schools will use learning management software
to conduct and publish their online lectures. Once you have tested the
equipment, you will need to decide how you will be recording the lecture. Make
sure that your equipment is fully charged and has enough storage space to record
an entire lecture. Find out how close you need to be to the recording equipment
to capture a high-quality recording. When your recording is clear, it’s easily
understandable by your class, and transcribing it later will be easier.īefore
you start recording, check if your microphone produces good sound quality. To
make the most out of the recording, it will heavily rely on quality audio.

Alternatively, you can use a digital recorder. If you’re recording on your
smartphone or laptop, you should invest in an external microphone. However, it’s
not always guaranteed that it will produce excellent sound quality.

The latest smartphones and laptops usually come with microphones and recording
features. This will allow your students to focus on the discussion with the
confidence that they will have a chance to review the lesson later. If there are
no policies, it’s best to consult with each professor to get their permission.ĭo
you have a disability such as hard of hearing? You can mention this to your
professor, as this will serve as a good reason why you want to record the
lecture.Īs a professor, you can let your class know that you will record your
lecture. If your university has any regulations about recording lectures, it
would be a good idea to check them out. Some professors do not allow their
lectures to be recorded as they consider this to be intellectual property. Keep
on reading as we share with you the best practices for recording and
transcribing a lecture. Using technology and your resourcefulness, you can
record and transcribe the lectures you conduct or attend. Did you know that
recording your lectures will help make your lesson accessible to your class?Īre
you a student who’s trying to excel in your studies and looking for ways for you
to learn at your own pace? Perhaps, you’re a teacher who’s looking to find ways
to make the learning experience engaging for your students. While some are to
resume face-to-face classes, many aren’t anticipating this change anytime soon.
Virtual learning is a new experience for most of us. “Remain firm about your
goals, but flexible about your methods.” – William A.

The second wave of synthetic biology: from modules to systems. We expect the

reliable forward engineering of gene expression at genome scales.Įndy, D. We
studied all combinations of curated elements, demonstrating that arbitrary genes
are reliably expressed to within twofold relative target expression windows with
∼93% reliability. We measured activity distributions for each library and
selected elements that collectively resulted in expression across a 1,000-fold
observed dynamic range. We engineered libraries of constitutive and
repressor-regulated promoters along with translation initiation elements
following these definitions. We developed an expression cassette architecture
for genetic elements controlling transcription and translation initiation in
Escherichia coli: transcription elements encode a common mRNA start, and
translation elements use an overlapping genetic motif found in many natural
systems. An inability to reliably predict quantitative behaviors for novel
combinations of genetic elements limits the rational engineering of biological
systems.

 * Proactively understand how an application is performing.
 * APM tools are useful to monitor applications from development, through test,
and into production in the following ways: P.P.P.S.Application Insights is an
extension of Azure Monitor and provides application performance monitoring
(APM) features. This config will tail one file and assign one label:
job=syslog. Next, I will show a Promtail example config that adds one label
to log entries which are scraped from default Linux system log. Some notes
about Promtail: it has multiline support, but poor JSON support, and it is
possible to rotate logs (e.g. In simple terms, you add “jobs” and many
“targets” under each of them. Log lines can be processed before sending them
to Loki by using pipelines: a pipeline is used to transform a single log
line, its labels, and its timestamp. a server process) that scrapes logs from
multiple targets which are configured in scrape_configs.

With Loki 2.0 a whole new set of query language features that enable
extraction of labels at query time, removing previous limitations. Promtail
agent often adds the labels to log entries, which it then sends to Loki for
further processing. However, you can still “search” content by filtering the
non-indexed message content e.g. In general, you should keep the number of
both labels and streams low because otherwise you will experience performance
problems. So Loki indexes the labels and not the whole log messages, so it
differs from Elastic and Graylog because they index all text content. Streams
are identified by indexed label key-value -pairs called labels, which means
that you can perform a text search (only) over the labels. Getting started
with Loki and Promtail can be a bit tricky as it requires some reading: I
will try my best to make it easier for you! Hopefully I can paint the big
picture of what can be achieved with Grafana. In this post I am going to
focus mostly on Promtail. Loki log server official clients for sending logs
are Promtail, Fluentd, and Logstash. Grafana can be compared Kibana (K from
the ELK stack). However, Grafana provides out-of-the-box integration with
Prometheus (please see the image that represents a simplified view of a
Grafana based system) Grafana is not a monitoring or metrics system: you
should use Prometheus for application level monitoring, and Zabbix for
infrastructure level monitoring. However, you can introduce Loki log server
together with Promtail log agent to accomplish such a log service Grafana is
not a centralised log service: you should use Graylog or Elastic/ELK stack
for that use case.Data sources include logs, metrics, and database tables.īut
first, let’s try to position Grafana in the product landscape It is useful to
know that Grafana itself is basically a separate application that collects
and presents data from different configured data sources. What is Grafana?
Grafana is open source visualization and monitoring software.

word on Amazon partnerships this year, so while the Gen 2 appears to include an
Alexa shortcut, it's unclear if you can read Kindle books on the external
display again. There's a more pronounced focus on managing your calendar and
incoming messages through dedicated widgets, and even better, the Gen 2 now lets
you launch certain productivity apps - seemingly including Microsoft's suite of
Office software - without having to open the ThinkBook. The interface seems to
have gotten a pretty significant revamp, too. The big draw here is that the
second display is, well, bigger: last year's ThinkBook Plus packed a 10.8-inch E
Ink screen while this year's model uses a more spacious 12-inch panel that
matches the 13.3-inch main screen's 2560x1600 resolution. But that didn't stop
Lenovo from taking a hard look at last year's ThinkBook Plus and cooking up a
$1,549 Gen 2 i model for 2021.

Pop quiz, hotshot: when's the last time you seriously thought about buying a
laptop with a standard screen on one side and an E Ink display on the other? If
you answered "never," well, fine - that's probably true of most people.
