A tooth crown procedure usually requires two appointments in our Reading, PA
office. Your first appointment will include taking several highly accurate molds
(or impressions) that will be used to create your custom tooth crown. A mold
will also be used to create a temporary crown which will stay on your tooth for
approximately two weeks until your new dental crown is fabricated by a dental
laboratory. While your tooth is numb, the dentist will prepare your tooth by
removing any decay and shaping the surface to properly fit the dental crown.
Once these details are accomplished, your temporary tooth crown will be placed
with temporary cement and your bite will be checked to ensure you are biting
properly. At your second appointment in our Reading, PA office, your temporary
crown will be removed, the tooth will be cleaned, and your new tooth crown will
be carefully placed to ensure the spacing and bite are accurate.

What does a tooth crown look like?

Crowns can be made to look like your natural tooth or use metals like gold
depending on where the tooth is and what you want it to look like. Dental crowns
are caps or coverings that go over teeth that are cracked or have other types of
damage. Some dental crowns are made of porcelain or resin, while others are made
from gold or porcelain fused to metal.

How long does a tooth crown last?

There are various factors that determine how long a crown may last for you
including where the crown is placed in your mouth. Some tooth crowns will last a
lifetime while others may crack and need to be restored at some point.

How much tooth is needed for a tooth crown?

The simple answer is tooth crowns can be applied to various shapes and sizes of
teeth, as well as those that have fallen out entirely. If you have a limited
amount of your natural tooth left composite resin can be added in layers to
build a base for the crown because of its capacity to bond with enamel tooth
structure. Composite resin is not robust enough to recreate your entire tooth,
but it functions well to create a stable base called a build up. Tooth crowns
are also utilized to replace a completely missing tooth. To replace a missing
tooth, an implant-supported crown is necessary, this necessitates the placement
of a dental implant in your jaw.
