Samples were analysed for trace elements including REE by solution inductively
coupled plasma mass spectrometry ICP-MS in the Department of Geological Sciences
at the University of Cape Town, using a Thermo X-Series 2 instrument, and the
following analytical procedure: 50 mg of sample powder were dissolved in a
HF—HNO 3 mixture in sealed Savilex beakers on a hotplate for 48 h, followed by
evaporation to incipient dryness and two treatments of 2 ml of concentrated HNO
3. Standardization was against artificial multi-element standards. Major-oxide,
trace-element and REE data for the eight intrusive units are presented in Table
3.

Percentage relative deviations of measured concentrations from certified values
in standard basalt BHVO Figure 4 shows a variety of major-element Harker-type
variation diagrams for the Heerenveen rocks. SiO 2 contents do not vary
continuously.

This division into low- and high-SiO 2 groups or SiO 2 gap occurs not only
between units, but also within two of the mapped units. It is thus a fundamental

slope Fig. The Stage 3 quartz monzonite data points form what appears to be a
splay trend of lower slope, at lower SiO 2 concentration.

Those for the grey granite of Stage 2 also appear to form a sub-trend. P 2 O 5
not shown exhibits a similar variation to TiO 2. Al 2 O 3 variation also not
shown is rather scattered, as is apparent from the observation that, at c. As
for TiO 2 , the Stage 3 quartz monzonites and the Stage 2 grey granites form
sub-trends. The scatter in TiO 2 , relative to FeO T would be compatible with
entrainment of peritectic or restitic ilmenite in varying proportions, in most
of the Heerenveen magmas, but not for the quartz monzonite of Stage 3. Overall,
the MgO variation Fig. Again, the grey granite shows an internal, good linear
variation, and there may be a trend in the data points for the quartz monzonite.

However, the data for the other units are more scattered. One possible model for
the production of a series of magmas such as this involves mixing between felsic
and mafic end-member magmas. Average Early Archaean basaltic and andesitic rocks
Condie, are also plotted as crosses. It is readily apparent that neither the
overall trend in the variation of MgO nor any internal sub-trend that might
exist is likely have an intermediate or mafic magma as a mixing end-member, and
especially not an end-member similar to average Early Archaean intermediate to
mafic igneous rocks.

It therefore seems highly unlikely that the variations within the Heerenveen
batholith are due to magma mixing. This conclusion is reinforced in some of the
other variation diagrams discussed below, and is also supported by the paucity
of magmatic enclaves in the rocks.


FOOD AND DINING

CaO variation Fig. For most groups of rocks, K 2 O is highly scattered Fig. In
this K 2 O plot, many of the rock units form distinct clusters. The plot also
shows the dividing lines between the various rock series, from Le Maitre et al.
Fractionation paths normally produce variation trends that are subparallel to
the series boundaries e.

The lack of such trends and the presence of a high degree of vertical scatter in
the plot suggest that crystal fractionation is an unlikely explanation for this
variation. K 2 O is plotted against Na 2 O in Fig. Overall there is an expected
negative trend, with quasi-linear variations for some of the units. This
suggests that the protoliths for these magmas may have been basaltic in
composition. It should be noted, however, that the data points for many of the
units actually straddle this boundary, implying magma derivation from
heterogeneous source rocks. The positions of the data points for average Early
Archaean basalt and andesite are, again, in a region of the plot that
effectively rules out magma mixing with such end-members as a cause of the
variation.

Figure 5 shows the variations in some calculated parameters, plotted against SiO
2 or MgO. The only unit that is actually metaluminous is the quartz monzonite of
Stage 3. This, along with its low SiO 2 , high MgO, separate trends on the
variation diagrams and potassic, alkaline character mark the magmas of this unit
as fundamentally different from the others in the batholith. For Mg-number [mol.


THINGS TO DO IN BARBERTON

For the rest of the units, the data points define either uncorrelated clouds or
near-vertical arrays. This sort of variation is unlike that expected for rocks
that belong to a differentiation series produced by crystal fractionation, or a
series produced through magma mixing. This reinforces the already cited evidence
that these processes were not important for the Heerenveen magmas.

The other important observation in this diagram is that the units belonging to
the earlier emplacement stages Stages 1 and 2 tend to be more magnesian higher
Mg-number , despite their lower MgO contents Fig.

Partial melting experiments on all types of protoliths have demonstrated that
the MgO contents of melts increase with T. This is true whether the experiments
are fluid-absent or fluid-present. Thus, it seems more likely that the
protoliths for the earlier stages contained more mafic rocks. Combined with
their peraluminous character, it seems likely that the magmas from these early
stages of batholith construction were produced through melting reactions that
left substantial quantities of hornblende behind in the residual assemblages
see, e.

The inferred presence of large modal quantities of residual hornblende in the
restitic source rocks suggests that the melting reactions may have been
fluid-present, as fluid-absent partial melting would have destroyed the
amphibole, leaving residual, anhydrous pyroxenes. Figure 5 c Mg-number plotted
against MgO content shows that there is no correlation between these two
parameters. This is instructive because it rules out production of the series of
magma compositions by any kind of mixing between a mafic magma high MgO and
Mg-number and a felsic magma low MgO and Mg-number.

The same is true for CaO variation with MgO not shown ; the lack of correlation
here also rules out mafic—felsic magma mixing. Indeed, fractionation of mafic
minerals normally results in a decrease in Mg-number as MgO contents decrease.
