Mendocino County sheriff’s deputies investigate Monday’s Highway 101 fatal
shooting, originally thought to be a traffic accident. – PETER ARMSTRONG
By The Ukiah Daily Journal | udj@ukiahdj.com
UPDATED: August 23, 2018 at 12:00 a.m.

Update: 10:15 p.m. The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office is reporting that two
men were found shot in a maroon, four-door 2001 Chevy Silverado pick-up truck
that was stopped in the southbound lanes of Highway 101 near mile marker 35
around 4:41 p.m. July 2.

One of the men was deceased and one was airlifted to Santa Rosa for treatment of
what was described as a life-threatening injury. Neither victim has been
identified at this time.

Update: 8:47 p.m. The MCSO is asking the public for help in locating a suspect
from a shooting that occurred on Highway 101 between Ukiah and Willits and
resulted in the closing of northbound and southbound U.S. 101 near Uva Drive,
according to a text message from the citizen alert notification system.

The person left on foot in an unknown direction. Authorities say it is unknown
if the person is a man or woman. They do not have a clothing description at this
time. The person may be armed and dangerous. They ask that anyone with
information about the incident or anyone noticing people who are strange, out of
place, or hitchhiking contact the sheriff’s department.

Update: 7:43 p.m. Authorities are shutting down U.S. northbound 101 just north
of Uva Drive near Redwood Valley. Sheriff Tom Allman asked to stop the
northbound traffic so that authorities can get access to the scene.

Update: 7:21 p.m. Authorities determined the reported vehicle fire was not true
and the vehicle was instead out of gas.

Update: 7:14 p.m. Authorities are also responding to a vehicle fire on U.S. 101
southbound. U.S. 101 southbound 2.5 miles north of Uva Drive in Redwood Valley
is still shut down.

The Caltrans District 1 Twitter page announced that the southbound lanes of U.S.
101 are closed about 2.5 miles north of Uva Drive in Redwood Valley for an
active crime scene. There was a shooting, originally thought to be a traffic
accident, with a fatality and another person air-lifted by helicopter to Santa
Rosa. Caltrans crews are responding to set up traffic control to allow passenger
vehicles to get around the closure. They said they would try to reopen to all
traffic when they can.

Authorities were told about a green 1980s truck with a camper shell with an
older paint job, no back window, and unknown subjects, possibly one heading
south toward Ukiah. Authorities issued a BOLO (“be on the lookout”) for a green
1980s truck for a white man with a white beard described as Grizzley Adams
heading south toward Ukiah. It is not clear what his role is.

The Ukiah CHP also announced that there was also a vehicle collision on US-101
southbound at milepost marker 37, south of Willits. There are vehicles currently
blocking the roadway at this time and traffic is backing up. They encouraged
everyone driving through the area to go slow. Authorities are now attempting to
move cars out of the way, although it is expected to take some time.
