These are <strong>things <\/strong>that have <strong>already happened<\/strong> but <strong>we wish they'd happened in a different way.<\/strong> <strong>This <\/strong>use of 'wish' is <strong>very similar to the <\/strong><\/span><strong>third conditional<span>.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n<div id=\"example\">\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>I <strong>wish <\/strong>that I <strong>had studied<\/strong> harder at school. (But unfortunately the train was late, and so I missed my interview.)<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n<p>Instead of the past perfect subjunctive, we can use <strong><cite>could<\/cite> + perfect infinitive<\/strong>:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div id=\"example\">\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li> If only I <strong>could have been<\/strong> there. I'm sure it was a great concert. (I'm sorry that I couldn't be there)<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"rule\">\r\n<h3>Other uses of 'wish'<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Wish + to + infinitive:<\/strong><span> <\/span><br \/>\r\n<span>We can use 'wish' with the infinitive to <strong>mean <\/strong>'<strong>would like<\/strong>'. This is <strong>very formal<\/strong>. We don't usually use a continuous tense with 'wish' in this case.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<div id=\"example\">\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>I wish to speak to the headmaster.
