LONDON — Keir Starmer became Britain’s prime minister on Friday, ushering in a
new era after 14 years of Conservative rule, following a stunning victory that
brought his left-leaning Labour Party to power with a huge majority. Starmer met
King Charles III at Buckingham Palace and was invited to form a government.
Speaking outside 10 Downing Street, Starmer said his would be a “government of
service,” telling voters: “You have given us a clear mandate, and we will use
that to deliver change.”

HERE'S WHAT TO KNOW:

Labour is returning to power after 14 years in the opposition — and after
Starmer led an effort to purge the hard-left elements of the party and sell
voters on a “changed Labour.”
Rishi Sunak, the outgoing prime minister, accepted responsibility for the
Conservative Party’s worst defeat. He will continue to serve as a lawmaker in
the House of Commons, and for a short time as leader of the Conservative Party,
until his successor is chosen.
Britain has elected its most diverse Parliament, and Starmer has appointed a
diverse cabinet. Among the top officials is Rachel Reeves, who became Britain’s
first female chancellor of the exchequer, or finance minister.
