Love it or think it’s ridiculous, astrology has increasingly worked its way into
popular culture and the general psyche.

Major magazines, from Cosmopolitan and Elle to Vogue and GQ, regularly cover the
topic, publishing horoscopes and articles about how the planets are impacting
various aspects of life. Social media is full of astrological influencers.
Artists, like Kacey Musgraves, SZA and Arianna Grande, have sung about Saturn
and its return in their music.

And, according to one survey of 2,000 young Americans by academic and writing
EduBirdie, around 80% of all Gen Z and millennials believe in astrology—a size
worthy portion of whom use the practice to make career and other major life
decisions.

This got us wondering: Should we be looking to the stars when picking a wine,
too?

Wine Enthusiast Writer-at-Large Tonya Pitts thinks so.

“I am a firm believer that everything is connected and people gravitate to
people, places and things that spark something inside them; it could be joy,
passion, intrigue or memories from the past,” she says. “There are those that
say it has nothing to do with anything, but I like to think it’s all in the
stars and planetary alignments.”

To help guide the various zodiac signs toward specific wine that may resonate
with their various attributes, Pitts took into account the general profile of
grape varietals and along with regional profiles. Then, sought out bottles that
evoke emotion and translate into traits of behaviors of the signs, essentially
thinking if a varietal were a person, what would it taste like and what sort of
emotions would it produce.

“It’s no simple formula,” she adds. While she did her best to map it all out,
Pitts admits, “every prediction or thought doesn’t line up with everyone
either.”

So, what, precisely, are her astrological wine picks? Check them out below.

ARIES (MARCH 21 – APRIL 19): SYRAH

Themes: “Bold and ambitious, Aries dives headfirst into even the most
challenging situations—and they’ll make sure they always come out on top,” says
Pitts.

Why: “Syrah is bold and ambitious, like an Aries. Often a sleeper hit, it’s a
wine that always strives to stand out, much like those born under this sign.
Syrah is grown around the globe. It is always fantastic and intriguing, much
like the ram.”

LAVA CAP 2020 ESTATE SYRAH (EL DORADO)

This wine is fresh, lively with aromas of boysenberry, black plum, dried herb
and chicory. The palate is black berry, black cherry, blood orange zest, chicory
intertwined with bittersweet chocolate, espresso and a silky dry finish. Pair
with Hanger Steak. 92 Points — Tonya Pitts

$28 Lava Cap Winery

SYCAMORE RANCH 2022 TIERRA ALTA VINEYARD SYRAH (BALLARD CANYON)

Quite dark in the glass, this single-vineyard Syrah offers ripe aromas of
candied black plum, blueberry, vanilla and caramel on the nose. Stewed fruit and
milk chocolate flavors align on the dense palate, where black pepper pops on the
finish. 91 Points— Matt Kettmann

$ Varies Sycamore Ranch

TAURUS (APRIL 20 – MAY 20): MOURVÈDRE

Themes: “Tauruses are oriented around the physical world,” says Pitts. “Bulls
tend to be grounded and logical. They love routine and they're committed to
their own comfort.”

Why: “Mourvèdre is a grounded and supple wine, mirroring Taurus's love for
routine and comfort. Known for its floral notes and dark fruit flavors like
blackberry and boysenberry, Mourvèdre is both forceful and subtle, making it a
perfect match for the grounded nature of a Taurus.”

BIG BASIN 2022 RODNICK FARM VINEYARD OLD VINE MOURVÈDRE (CHALONE)

From suitcase vines planted by legendary vintner Dick Graff that are now 36
years old, this bottling offers raspberry, hibiscus and crushed sandstone aromas
on the nose. The palate is very tense, showing clean flavors of cherry, berry,
rose petal and white pepper. This will be exciting to track, so drink
now-2034. Cellar Selection. 94 Points — M.K.

$ Varies Big Basin Vineyards

GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUNE 20): RIESLING

Themes: “Spontaneous, playful and adorably erratic, Geminis are driven by their
insatiable curiosity,” says Pitts. “Appropriately symbolized by the celestial
twins, this air sign is interested in so many pursuits that it had to double
itself.”

Why: “Just like Gemini, Riesling has many faces (and no, that’s not a bad
thing). Whether it's dry or rich with residual sugar, Riesling embodies the
duality and versatility of a Gemini, making it an exciting and unpredictable
choice that can vary widely depending on where it's grown.”

LONG SHADOWS 2023 POET'S LEAP RIESLING (COLUMBIA VALLEY (WA))

Every year I marvel at how such a marvelous Riesling can be $20. The Poet’s Leap
opens with an aromatic ode to lychee fruit, honeysuckle, almond butter and a
wisp of petrol. Lemony acidity curls itself around flavors like green honeydew
melon, rose water and the sweetness of a slice of peach pie. The 2023 is as good
as any in recent memory. Mercy. Best Buy. 93 Points — Michael Alberty

$20 Long Shadows

JASPER HILL 2023 GEORGIA'S PADDOCK RIESLING (HEATHCOTE)

A young and fairly austere bottling compared to past vintages, this should pick
up lovely complexity along the way. For now, it offers restrained notes of lemon
balm and lamp oil with grapefruit and lime blossom nuances that lead to a
wax-textured palate with tongue-tingling acidity and citrusy finish. Drink
now–2034. Cellar Selection. 92 Points — Christina Pickard

$45 Old Bridge Cellars

CANCER (JUNE 21 – JULY 22): CABERNET FRANC

Themes: “Nurturing and loyal, Cancers are also protective of their loved ones,”
says Pitts. “They are highly sensitive, deeply caring and feel everything
deeply.”

Why: “Cabernet Franc is nurturing and needs careful attention, just like a
Cancer. Depending on how it’s grown, it can range from herbaceous and
red-fruited to deep, dark and brooding, reflecting the crab’s depth of emotion
and sensitivity.”

LANG & REED 2022 CABERNET FRANC (CALIFORNIA)

This wine is rich, opulent with aromas of cranberry, red plum, dried sage,
potpourri and earth on the nose. The flavors on the palate are pomegranate,
black cherry, dried cranberry, orange zest layered with fresh herbs, bittersweet
chocolate and dry silky finish. Pair with Roasted Duck Breast. 92 Points — T.P.

$ Varies Bottle Barn

FAZELI CELLARS 2019 FERDOWSI CABERNET FRANC (TEMECULA VALLEY)

Rich aromas of black cherry, cocoa dust and baking spice converge on the nose of
this bottling. The palate’s fresh boysenberry flavors are layered in licorice,
herb and pepper spice. 91 Points — M.K.

$75 Fazeli Cellars

LEO (JULY 23 – AUGUST 22): CABERNET SAUVIGNON

Themes: “Passionate, loyal and infamously dramatic, Leo is represented by the
lion and these spirited fire signs are the kings and queens of the celestial
jungle,” says Pitts.

Why: “Cabernet Sauvignon is often seen as the king of wines, much like Leo’s
place in the zodiac. Known for its boldness and stature in the wine world, the
varietal commands attention and is a top choice for a sign that loves to be in
the spotlight.

METHOD 2021 CABERNET SAUVIGNON (NAPA VALLEY)

Delicious and drinkable, this Cabernet Sauvignon offers flavors of black plum
and cocoa, black currant and warming spices. The tannins melt across the palate,
carried by balancing acidity. Approachable and friendly without being boring.
Pop open with autumn stews and baked squashes and enjoy. 92 Points — Elaine
Chukan Brown

$45 Precision Wine Co.

WOOD FAMILY VINEYARDS 2021 WOODY'S CAB CABERNET SAUVIGNON (LIVERMORE VALLEY)

This wine is deep, lush, with aromas of Boysenberry, Red currant compote, star
anise, and orange vanilla cream on the nose. The flavors on the palate are Bing
cherry, raspberry, cherry cola, clove, orange zest, layered with mineral, dark
chocolate and a long silky finish. Pair with Grilled Meats. 92 Points — T.P.

$ Varies Wood Family Vineyards

VIRGO (AUGUST 23 – SEPTEMBER 22): GRÜNER VELTLINER

Themes: “Virgos are said to be the most analytical and organized members of the
zodiac, foxes are logical, practical and systematic in their approach to life,”
says Pitts.

Why: “Grüner Veltliner is complex and layered, much like a Virgo. Its pleasing
and intricate flavors require attention to detail, making it the ideal wine for
this meticulous and practical sign.”

RAPTOR RIDGE 2023 ESTATE GRÜNER VELTLINER (CHEHALEM MOUNTAINS)

Tuscowallame Estate is one of only 29 places you’ll find Grüner Veltliner
growing in North America. In addition to a bit of weight, it almost always seems
to have the white pepper I associate with this grape. The 2023 also has lemon
and lime zest aromas to accompany a floral plumeria note. Lemon sorbet, tarragon
and spearmint flavors go on forever. 90 Points — M.A.

$ Varies Wine-searcher

JULES TAYLOR 2023 GRÜNER VELTLINER (MARLBOROUGH)

A lovely example of an Austrian variety that is, unfortunately, rarely seen in
New Zealand. Drink it only slightly chilled to maximize the citrus, apple and
stone fruit characteristics, and to find the lemongrass and gingery spice
beneath. There’s a lovely pithiness to the texture and al dente acidity with a
honeyed citrus finish. 92 Points — C.P.

$ Varies Wine.com

LIBRA (SEPTEMBER 23 – OCTOBER 22): SAUVIGNON BLANC

Themes: “Libras are known for the love of being around other people, they are a
fun and loving extroverted sign,” says Pitts.

Why: “Sauvignon Blanc is a bright and lively wine that makes you want to bask in
the sun, just like these swans love being in the company of others. Its fresh
and approachable nature reflects Libra’s love of socializing and fun.”

CLAY SHANNON 2023 SAUVIGNON BLANC (LAKE COUNTY)

This wine is bright, zesty with aromas of papaya, grassy green herbs, green
apple, and citrus notes on the nose. The flavors on the palate are Pink
grapefruit, orange blossoms, dried herbs, intertwined with mineral, citrus peel,
and a juicy mouthwatering finish. Pair with Fresh Seafood. 91 Points — T.P.

$ Varies Clay Shannon

KENZO ESTATE 2023 ASATSUYU SAUVIGNON BLANC (NAPA VALLEY)

Flavors of lychee, white nectarine and lemongrass are touched by white pepper.
Layers of accentuating spices are carried through this wine by firm acidity,
enveloping texture and a long, vibrant finish. 93 Points — E.C.B.

$ Varies Wine Chateau

SCORPIO (OCTOBER 23 – NOVEMBER 21): PINOT NOIR

Themes: “Elusive and mysterious, Scorpio is one of the most misunderstood signs
of the zodiac,” says Pitts. “Scorpions are known for their loyalty and
devotion—and also their passion.”

Why: “Pinot Noir is often misunderstood, just like Scorpio. It’s a delicate,
thin-skinned grape that requires nurturing, but when treated with care, it can
be deeply rewarding. Its reputation for being dark and complex mirrors Scorpio’s
passionate and enigmatic nature.”

MAGGY HAWK 2021 UNFORGETTABLE PINOT NOIR (ANDERSON VALLEY)

This wine is opulent, with aromas of Black cherry, red currant compote, cinnamon
spice, and fresh florals on the nose. The flavors on the palate are Bing cherry,
blackcurrant confiture, vanilla lime cream interwoven with dried herbs,
bittersweet chocolate, earth and a long silky finish. Hold or Drink until 2032
Pair with Lamb Shoulder. 94 Points  — T.P.

$75 Maggy Hawk

ZD 2022 PINOT NOIR (CARNEROS)

Aromas of red cherry, cinnamon and clove swirl from the glass, joining flavors
of fresh herbs and cranberry. Silky, palate-stimulating structure gives balance
to the zest and spice of this wine, culminating in a persistent finish. 90
Points — E.C.B.

$60 ZD Wines

SAGITTARIUS (NOVEMBER 22 – DECEMBER 21): GRENACHE

Themes: “What makes Sagittarius so unique is its dynamic blend of passion,
curiosity, intensity and adaptability,” says Pitts. “The centaur values
independence and the ability to do what they want, when they want, above all
else.”

Why: “Grenache is versatile and adaptable, much like a Sagittarius. It can stand
on its own but also blends well with others, reflecting Sagittarius’s
independent yet social nature. Grenache is a perfect match for this adventurous
and passionate sign.”

CAPO CREEK 2021 GRENACHE (DRY CREEK VALLEY)

The nose of this Grenache displays aromas of dried cherries, red licorice, sweet
cinnamon and some toastiness from new French oak. The palate is loaded with
cherry and raspberry fruit but finishes with a wealth of drying tannin that
should resolve with some time in the cellar.  90 Points — Tom Capo

$85 Capo Creek

THE LANGUAGE OF YES 2021 RANCHO REAL VINEYARD GRENACHE (SANTA MARIA VALLEY)

Crushed boysenberry, white peppercorn and scarlet-red rose petals make for a
dark while opulent and spicy nose on this bottling by Randall Grahm. It’s firmly
structured on the palate, giving depth to baked cherry, light toast and
herb-dust flavors. 94 Points — M.K.

$ Varies The Language of Yes

CAPRICORN (DECEMBER 22 – JANUARY 19): AGLIANICO

Themes: “Capricorns are known to be extremely hardworking visionaries, leaders
and trailblazers,” says Pitts. “Pragmatic and proud, sea goats want to be
praised both for the reasonable actions they take and their approach to life.”

Why: “Aglianico is a grape that matures into something truly special, much like
a Capricorn. Grown in mountainous regions, it starts off with iron-rich, dry red
fruit flavors and develops into a solid, earthy wine that leaves a lasting
impression, embodying the determination and visionary spirit of a Capricorn.”

DONNACHIARA 2019 RISERVA AGLIANICO (TAURASI)

The nose balances decadent fruit aromas of black cherry, plums and figs with
invigorating, savory notes of pepper, warm stone and fresh dirt. An emergent
blackberry element headlines the palate, while more woodsy undertones bring a
softness. Dusty, grippy tannins ignite on the finish. 93 Points — Danielle
Callegari

$55 Total Wine & More

BENESSERE 2021 ESTATE AGLIANICO (ST. HELENA)

Palate-coating and abundant tannins balanced by glittering acidity carry a
palate of dark fruits, black tea and raspberry leaf tea for a savory and
brooding Aglianico, an uncommon find in California. Begs for rich risotto,
marbled steak or mushrooms sautéed in oil. Delicious and satisfying. 90 Points
— E.C.B.

$70 Beneserre Vineyards

AQUARIUS (JANUARY 20 – FEBRUARY 18): VIOGNIER

Themes: “Aquarians are clever, analytical, technical, truthful, assertive,
confident, progressive and innovative,” says Pitts. “These water bearers like to
solve problems, improve what's already working well and push boundaries.”

Why: “Viognier is a thoughtful and complex wine that, when done right, can be
very thought-provoking, just like an Aquarius. Whether blended with Syrah to add
a floral touch or enjoyed on its own, Viognier’s ability to stand out reflects
Aquarius’s innovative spirit.”

CARR 2023 KAERSKOV VINEYARD VIOGNIER (LOS OLIVOS DISTRICT)

Extremely light in the glass, this bottling from a sustainability-leading
vineyard opens on the nose with honeydew, gardenia and tuberose aromas. The
palate is tightly woven and buoyant with a refreshing acidity that lifts the
plumeria, cherimoya and earthy paraffin flavors. 91 Points — M.K.

$30 Carr Winery

HOLLY’S HILL 2023 VIOGNIER, (EL DORADO)

This wine is bright, zesty, aromas of grilled spice peaches, honey suckle,
guava, and dry florals on the nose. The flavors on the palate are Tangerine,
Papaya, cantaloupe intermingled with clove, Pink grapefruit, and fresh crackled
peppercorn on the finish. Pair with Tuna Nicoise. 91 Points — T.P.

$30 Holly's Hill Vineyards

PISCES (FEBRUARY 19 – MARCH 20): CHARDONNAY

Themes: “Pisces is the most intuitive, sensitive and empathetic sign of the
entire zodiac and they will go to great lengths to ensure the happiness of those
around them,” says Pitts.

Why: “Chardonnay is a versatile and crowd-pleasing wine, much like the fish.
Chardonnay can adapt to different environments, in different regions around the
globe. Chardonnay grown in Mendocino Ridge must adapt to the long cold breezes
from the nearby ocean, while its counterpart in Livermore Valley gets to bask in
the sunshine and enjoy a warm growing season. These regions create completely
unique styles of Chardonnay, yet it can please a wide audience, embodying
Pisces’s empathetic and caring nature.”

SIDURI 2022 CHARDONNAY (WILLAMETTE VALLEY)

For those of you who enjoy a stroll on the creamier side of Chardonnay life,
here’s a wine to champion. The wine’s lemon curd and tangerine aromas are a nice
mix of sweet and tang, while a puff of chalkboard dust floats in the background.
Gentle acidity caresses flavors of lemon gelato and the caramel-drizzled
goodness of a stroopwafel cookie. 91 Points — M.A.

$ Varies Wine.com

HARTFORD COURT 2022 DUPRATT VINEYARD CHARDONNAY (MENDOCINO)

This wine is bright, with aromas of yellow apple, nectarine, pineapple, florals
and toasty oak on the nose. Flavors on the palate are Meyer lemon, pear and
cinnamon, wrapped around chamomile tea, sedimentary rock and a long,
mouthwatering finish. Pair with seafood pasta with cream sauce. 94 Points — T.P.
