Facts & FAQ
Media

We deserve a bridge that reconnects what we’ve lost. We deserve new
opportunities for people to live, work and play in our city. This is a moment we
must harness and use to its fullest potential for Ohio, Kentucky, Covington,
Cincinnati and all of us.

We deserve a Better Bridge for a Better Future.

FAQS & FACTS

 * 1) IS BRIDGE FORWARD AGAINST THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE NEW COMPANION BRIDGE?

No, Bridge Forward supports construction of the New Companion Bridge.

 * 2) ARE BRIDGE FORWARD’S ACTIVITIES GOING TO CAUSE A DELAY IN THE CONSTRUCTION
   OF THE BRIDGE

No, Bridge Forward is not going to cause delays because ODOT has committed to
a Progressive Design Build process. Design Build means that construction can
begin prior to completion of all the design engineering. You continue design
on the complex parts while you build the straightforward parts of the
project. Progressive means that the owners work together with the designers
and construction contractors to achieve the mutually desired outcomes.

 * 3) WHY DOES IT MATTER THAT IT IS A PROGRESSIVE DESIGN BUILD?

A Progressive Design Build means that ODOT is not going the usual route of
finalizing the design, taking bids, then building the project in three
   separate steps.

Instead a Design Engineering & Construction Contractor (or a partnership of
companies) will be selected. The Contractor and ODOT then work together to
create the design with the input of local communities.

But, ODOT is instead giving the Contractor its plan from 20 years ago and
telling them to use that as the “base design”, without real discussion about
the current needs and conditions in our community.

In fact, the current ODOT plan is almost as much of “just an idea” as Bridge
Forward's plan. Based on the age of their design, ODOTs actual engineering
drawings may be less than 5% complete, and even that information has to be
verified by the Contractor. ODOT does not gain any time savings, except
   getting to ignore Cincinnati.

OHIO BRIDGE APPROACH

As It Looks Today

2013 ODOT Proposal

Bridge Forward Proposal

The 2013 preferred alternative does clear some room for expansion, but we
believe more can be achieved for even greater benefit.

The Brent Spence Project has been described as a ‘poster child’ that will demand
top notch engineering. I agree with that, but I think it will be a poster child
for a more fundamental reason. When our engineers, planners, politicians, civic
leaders and citizens come together, we will show the entire nation how to embody
the spirit of the infrastructure bill.

Our project will show the country how to build back better, how to reconnect
communities and how to harness transportation projects to knit places back
together that were once divided and torn down by them.

- Brian Boland
Principal, Bridge Forward

We envision a design refinement could deliver huge economic benefits through
land recapture.

RECONNECT OUR REGION CONCEPT

Slide to compare the current bridge approach with our proposal.

WE COULD UNCOVER AND RECLAIM 30 ACRES OF DOWNTOWN CINCINNATI!

WHAT COULD BE DONE WITH 30 ACRES?

Imagine what’s possible on 30 acres. This is our chance to dream big. What is
your vision for this area? Let’s start the conversation!

OUR INSPIRATION

Fort Washington Way reconnected us to the Riverfront. This project was much
further along when this design refinement was proposed.  They still got it
redesigned AND BUILT in four years.

Cities are always evolving and changing, Fort Washington way set the stage for
what we have seen happen in the last decade, now with the Brent Spence Bridge
it’s time to…

FINISH WHAT WE STARTED.
