famously couldn't crack it.

With the iPhone 11 Pro Max, you have an even more secure iPhone thanks to
improvements to iOS 13 and Face ID that make it challenging for anyone but
yourself to access. With iOS 13, Apple is making users more informed about their
apps. Similar to Android 10, if an app accesses your location in the background,
you'll get a notification with the option to deny it future access or limit
location usage to only while the app is open. In prior versions, Bluetooth was
accessible to apps without regard to why an app needed this permission.

In iOS 13, apps must define how they plan to use Bluetooth and you're able to
allow or deny access. Find My has been a staple in iOS for years, allowing you
to track your Apple devices remotely along with other anti-theft protections.
New with iOS 13 is the ability to track your iPhone even when the device is
offline. So if someone steals your iPhone and disables its internet connection
to abscond from Find My, it sends an encrypted location report to any nearby iOS
13 devices via Bluetooth, which can then upload the report to Find My on your
behalf.

But the most significant privacy addition is the "Sign in with Apple" feature.
Gone is the harsher silver bevel around the frame and rear fingerprint sensor.
It's like Google put the Pixel 2 through a smoothing machine, and we like the
results. You'll still find dual front-facing speakers on the Google Pixel 3. No
one else is really doing this anymore except Razer with the Razer Phone 2 , so
it's nice to see in a flagship device. You'll also get Active Edge, which allows
you to squeeze the sides of the phone to call up Google Assistant. We much
prefer this squeeze mechanic as opposed to a dedicated AI button on the frame,
like Samsung does with Bixby button which we often confuse for the volume down
button.

The Pixel 3 color are rather muted, with 'Just Black' as our favorite of the
trio. Okay, it's the color you want if you're looking to stand out a bit, but we
liked last year's unique Mint color more. The 5. It's big and expansive, and
sits in a phone that's smaller than we had expected given the screen size
rumors. The entire thing measures It's roughly the same size as the Pixel 2,
which had a smaller 5-inch display.

Google has had more than 10 years to get Android right and it shows — this is a
stable, mature operating system, and with Android 9 Pie Google has sensibly
decided to adopt a gesture system similar to the one on the newer iPhones, with
swipes replacing buttons. We particularly like the "Flip to Shhh" feature —
currently in beta — that lets you turn your phone over to activate Do Not
Disturb mode very handy for meetings and dinner times.

As on the Pixels, you can squeeze the sides of the Google Pixel 3 XL to launch
Google Assistant or another app — it works very well but it's not something we
particular found ourselves using an awful lot. Speaking of Google Assistant, the
Pixel phones can't be beaten in terms of Google Assistant integration. A long
press on the Home button or a swipe from the Home screen and the Assistant feed
is there for you, and you can of course launch the app with a "hey Google" voice
command as well.

As far as security goes, it's pretty much par for the course. There's a rear
fingerprint scanner which should really be your primary way of locking and
unlocking the Pixel 3 XL, but you can use a PIN, a pattern, or a face if you
prefer. Google seems to have quietly removed the voice unlock option we've seen
on Pixels past, however. It's also worth mentioning that the Google Pixel phones
do of course get Android updates faster than any other handsets.

When Android 10 and Android 11 roll around, the Pixel 3 XL is going to be one of
the first phones in line. Come for the excellent camera, stay for the Pixel
Android and speedy software updates.
