Help Someone Else

Have you ever noticed how anxiety plays out in different ways for different
people? Perhaps for one person, it shows up in social settings, while someone
else is more easily triggered about work, and others are anxious about their
physical health. If we think of anxiety less in terms of the outer things we’re
anxious about, and more as an internal experience that just gets overlaid onto
some outer scenario, then we can think of anxiety as a state of mind that is
similar among so many of us. If so many of us are having an unpleasant
experience, wouldn’t it be great if we could help each other out?

When we help each other through the hard times, especially if their hard times
are similar to our own, it has a special way of simultaneously helping us too.
If you’ve ever tried to help someone with technology for example, and you
learned something new in the process, then you know what I’m talking about. So,
how could trying to reduce someone else’s anxiety also benefit us? The funny
thing is, we can often see in others what we can’t see in ourselves. If we’re
able to draw parallels between someone else’s experience and our own and then
actually take our own advice, then we find ourselves in a win-win situation. We
can even use our awareness of how our particular fears and worries manifest as a
way to get the most out of reducing anxiety for ourselves and others. One way is
to help someone with a similar type of worry as you and help them look into that
particular type of anxiety. If this feels too close to home and potentially
triggering, find someone who struggles with stress and anxiety in a different
way than you. If you’re currently feeling grounded in your work but your kid is
sending you into a tailspin, find someone at the office who is stressed and try
to support them. Just think how great it would be to reduce the anxiety of any
kind, be it someone else’s or your own. In many ways, less anxiety for anyone is
less anxiety for everyone.

Got a minute for a quick practice?

Take a deep breath and get comfortable. Think about someone you know who is
currently anxious about something. Spend a couple of moments considering how
their worry and stress play out. Then think if there are things you could do to
help them. Are there things you could do to skillfully help them see something
they are missing, or perhaps even do something kind for them that would put
their mind at ease for a bit of time? Make a plan to actually help them the next
time you see them.
It's very common to experience social anxiety or feel uncomfortable at social
gatherings. Tiffani teaches us how to tune into our surroundings and feel our
feet on the ground to settle ourselves and reduce stress in these moments.

Cultivating Empathetic Joy

If you have ever felt a small sense of competition with someone you’ve cared
about, you are not alone. Neuroscientists tell us that we have an in-built need
for safeguarding and promoting our personal status. Even if we don’t seem to be
obsessed with obvious accomplishments, such as our professional standing or our
finances, we do seem to have a need to prove our worth. Whether it be at party
games or cooking a festive meal, we may feel the need to feel “as good as” or
even “better than” someone else.

Now, this may be normal, but it’s also an unhelpful state of mind. This mindset
is focused on building up our sense of ego and superiority and seeing others as
potential threats to this precarious position.

So, how do we counteract this?

Stand Back Up After A Fall

For many of us, the pressure to be right, win, and embody an idea of “success”
can make the thought of failing, or even making a mistake, unbearable. However,
I know for me at least, my achievements are more accurately shaped by my
response to failing, rather than hitting some mark of success. With this in
mind, we can see how it may be more crucial what we do when we fail than what we
do when we succeed.

devices we have access to each day, it can feel relieving to put away the phone

Thanks To You

If you’re like me, when you think of gratitude, you think of it as something
you’re supposed to feel toward someone or something else. Though a big part of
it is developing an appreciation for the things and people around us, don’t
forget that we have a lot to do with the positive things in our life. As an
interesting spin on our gratitude practice, let’s take a moment to send some
appreciation to the one we probably forgot to thank the most. Give some thanks
to YOURSELF!

Caring For Yourself Is Caring For Others

For many of us, it’s easier to do things for other people than it is for
ourselves. Even with the incredible amount of discomfort that comes from being
super stressed, it can be difficult to make changes if we think it’s only for
us. However, if you think about it, our stress ends up affecting the people
around us, sometimes much more than we realize. So, here are some things to
consider.
