He sang a song and invited his audience to be his neighbor. He drew some, and learned some, and watched young people practice their talents. And at the end of every episode, he told his audience that he likes them just the way they are, and that he’ll see them next time. Whenever he was asked about why it was important for him to perform these rituals, he explained that so many people lived in homes with no consistency. As a consequence, these people lived lives that often felt chaotic or frightening, and they often had trouble developing trust and dealing with change. Trust in Our Values Values can often be difficult to convey because they can vary between people. Even though most of us likely value the same basic things, we might find differences in our specific definitions of things like the following: * fairness * generosity * open communication * trust But by being consistent in our approach to other people, we show them how we define our values, and in turn how we would like to be treated. It also sends a signal to those around us that they can trust our values. It’s important in both our personal and professional lives, because it sends a signal that we’re confident in who we are. "When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news,my mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.' "—Mr. Rogers Looking for the Helpers Of course, there are times when things do seem to be changing more quickly than we’re ready for, or when things feel chaotic. Over the years, Mr. Rogers was frequently asked about how to deal with these situations, and he, with his characteristic consistency, gave the same advice: look for the helpers. In times of chaos, the helpers are the ones who are staying consistent. They’re the ones who are staying busy solving problems, instead of losing themselves in the uncertainty around them. These are the people who will often help to remind us that things around us are likely to return to normal one day. Watch: Fred Rogers turned out to be one of the helpers himself. His regular practice of inclusion spanned decades and challenged racism, sexism, stereotyping, and more. In this video, Francois Clemmons, who played Officer Clemmons on Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood for more than thirty years, describes how he was initially reluctant to take the role, but ultimately how it had a positive impact on his life.
