Return to site Return to site INSIDE MAN (NETFLIX) For a series that deals with themes as grim as child pornography, paedophilia, suicide and murder, Inside Man manages to be both compelling and entertaining. Its cast is led by Stanley Tucci as Jefferson Grieff, a soft-spoken death row inmate who's called upon to solve crimes by offering insight from his unique vantage point. Grieff's eerie composure and ruthless intellect make him a fascinating character, even in his darkest moments. He's an expert in forensic psychology, criminology and human emotion. He's also a master of manipulation. Despite being on death row for killing his wife, he's cool, calm and calculating as he interrogates a flustered senator or a suspicious journalist (Lydia West). Even as he lays out the facts of an undecided case, he deftly toys with his unsettled visitors. He clearly relishes his ability to help people solve their problems. His Watson-like sidekick Dillon Kempton (Atkins Estimond), a killer with a photographic memory, provides some of the show's wry humor. But there's a steady undercurrent of British dry humour that makes the audience chuckle awkwardly, despite the bleak subject matter. The other major draw is David Tennant's charming vicar Harry Watling, who leads a peaceful life in a small English village. He's a man who takes his moral responsibilities seriously but doesn't take himself too seriously. He's a kindred spirit to Grieff. And yet when he confides in Janice Fife (Dolly Wells), a woman he's interrogating, his choice to do so sets off a cascade of misunderstandings that ends with him locking her son's math tutor in his basement. This is a story of good and evil, of how you can do the right thing even when it's not the easy option. It's a testament to the strength of the acting that it works as a crime drama. The ending will leave you wanting more, and it's a perfect fit for Netflix. It was a bold move from the streamer to drop it without any fanfare, and the absence of a trailer or even an announcement made it a surprise hit. It's also a reminder of what Moffat is capable of when he doesn't let his penchant for cheekiness run wild. Only For Love 's built his career on reimagining and resurrecting iconic characters like Sherlock Holmes, but this is all original material. And while the first four episodes close off the core case, there's plenty of room for future seasons to delve into Grieff's twisted past and explore his psyche.
