The program will start with keertan by WHO ARE SIKHS? Sikhism or Sikhi (Punjabi: ਸਿੱਖੀ Sikkhī, from ਸਿੱਖ, Sikh, ‘disciple’, ‘seeker’, or ‘learner’) orginated in the Punjab region of the Indian subcontinent around the end of the 15th century CE. Sikhism is one of the youngest of the major religions and the world’s fifth-largest organized religion, with about 25-30 million Sikhs as of the early-21st century. WHAT IS A GURDWARA Gurdwara, (Punjabi: “doorway to the Guru”) in Sikhism, is a place of worship. The gurdwara contains—on a cot under a canopy—a copy of the Guru Granth Sahib, the sacred scripture of Sikhism. It also serves as a meeting place for conducting business of the congregation and wedding and initiation ceremonies. The more historically important gurdwaras serve as centres of pilgrimage during festivals. A communal dining hall (langar), in which meals are prepared and served to the congregation, and frequently a school is attached to the gurdwara. GURDWARA KHALSA DARBAR As a religious and cultural hub, the Gurdwara plugs the local Sikhs into the rest of the Charlotte community. It is a school for learning and a spiritual center. Free from any sectional interests or party politics, it will be focused on leadership building and establishing a public service platform for youth and others. Following the Sikh traditions, this small community has been actively contributing to a variety of issues through many local and national organizations. The Gurdwara is a platform for the Charlotte Sikhs to continue the selfless service (Seva). CHOOSE AMOUNT SERVICES Gurdwara provides multiple services to the community Besides Langar (Free Kitchen) and regular Diwans, our community is actively engaged in Interfaith organizations, Outreach programs and Education and Awareness about Sikhi. GURMAT SCHOOL Our school Calendar, Registration details and curriculum information is available here. Kids from age 4 to 18 years are split into five to six levels based on skills. The focus is on Gurmukhi, Gurmat, Virsa and Keertan. Registration opens in August for school starting in September to May. Vector 123 SEVADAARS The Gurdwara is a volunteer based community run organization. We have multiple committees helping execute our day-to-day activities, Diwans, programming, Langar, Gurmat School, and other priorities. The committees are coordinated by Officers, who work with the Board of Directors to set the goals and direction.
