We have more newsletters Show MeNo thanks, close See our Privacy Notice Steven Grievson is a name that still terrifies people in the North East. He was a murdering monster who operated across Wearside in the early 1990s - his oldest victim was just 18. Now convicted of four murders, The Sunderland Strangler is one of the most dangerous serial killers this region has ever known. THE KILLINGS As is often the case with murderers with more than victim, Grievson had a modus operandi: strangulation. He would then dump the bodies in a secluded building and set it alight to conceal what he had done. Grieveson also had a very specific type of target: young males, all three of whom were or had been students at Monkwearmouth Academy school. His victims were Thomas Kelly, 18, David Hanson and David Grieff, both 15. The teenagers’ burnt bodies were found in allotment sheds and an abandoned flat between November 1993 and February 1994. David Grieff murder victim, aged 15 years old, killed 25th February 1994 near Fulwell in Sunderland (Image: Collect) Grieveson was calculated: he would strangle his victims in such a way that there would be no signs of injury. The burning of the bodies also served the same purpose - this was clearly a man who had no intention of being caught. At first, the lack of evidence confused detectives and they initially believed the deaths were linked to teenage experiments with solvents that had gone tragically wrong. Although Grieveson was interviewed after the teenagers’ charred remains were found, it took seven months for a comprehensive investigation to be launched linking the three deaths to one killer. READ MORE RELATED ARTICLES * Crimes that shook Sunderland: The Red House estate killings that sent shivers down spines The prosecution’s theory was that Grievson was a repressed homosexual who, unable to accept his own nature, turned to violence to cover it up. He was given three life sentences with a minimum tariff of 35 years in prison. THE AFTERMATH Although he claimed to be innocent throughout the trial, Grieveson finally admitted to the crimes in 2004. The news was met by visceral anger from the family. Sheila Hanson, David’s mother, said at the time: “I felt physically sick when I found out. Why is he doing this? “He has been told he will have to serve 35 years, so there’s no way it can reduce his sentence. “The only reasons he can be admitting his guilt at this stage are his own selfish ones.” David Hanson, murder victim aged 15 years old, killed 4th February 1994 (Image: Collect) But an even worse admission would soon follow. In 2013, Grieveson confessed to yet another murder, committed 23 years earlier. Another young boy, 14-year-old this time, his youngest: Simon Martin. His body was found in a derelict building at Gillside House in Roker, Sunderland, on May 26 1990. Simon had run away from home days earlier. READ MORE RELATED ARTICLES * Unsolved murder: The 1992 brutal killing of seven-year-old Nikki Allan When we was found, he was semi-naked and had been battered to death with a piece of rubble, a change from Grieveson’s usual method. The killer told police in an interview he had gone to the property with Simon after they had been playing football together. Grieveson, who was 19 at the time, said he and the 14-year-old “performed a sex act” and told officers that the killing was a way of covering up his sexuality. He also claimed to be “haunted” by his crime. More than two decades on, he confessed to the killing but only on the grounds of diminished responsibility. Thomas Kelly, murder victim aged aged 18 years old (Image: Collect) A jury saw through it and found him guilty of murder after a nine-day trial. At the time, Simon’s parents, Robert and Jean Martin, said: “Today is the end of a long journey for us, which will finally give us closure. “I would like to thank Northumbria Police and all those who have worked on this case to get today’s decision. “It has been a traumatic and life changing experience for all the families involved. “Now Grieveson could spend the rest of his days behind bars. READ MORE RELATED ARTICLES * Unsolved murder: The 2004 slaying of 19-year-old Scott Pritchard “No other family should have to lose a son and suffer the heartache we have had to endure.” Sentencing Grieveson to life in prison with a minimum term of 35 years, Mr Justice Ramsey said it was a horrendous attack on an innocent young boy. Simon Martin who was murdered (Image: PA) He added: “You are now 43 and in 1990 you murdered Simon Martin, a 14-year-old school boy who had become your friend. “He came from a supportive family, of a father, a mother and a brother. He had everything to live for. “This was a horrendous attack and murder of an innocent young boy, groomed by you and lured for your sexual pleasure.” He was also briefly linked to another notorious Sunderland murder. In 2014, Northumbria Police arrested him on suspicion of Nikki Allan’s murder.
