VIDEO: THIS OFFSHORE WIND FARM IS FIRST TO FEED US GRID

New York’s South Fork Wind has become the first utility-scale offshore wind farm
in federal waters to power up and deliver electricity to the grid.



The project has completed the installation of two turbines around 35 miles off
Montauk, Long Island, with all 12 SG 11-200 DD Siemens Gamesa turbines expected
to be installed by early 2024.

On completion, the 130 MW South Fork Wind facility will generate sufficient
electricity to power approximately 70,000 Long Island homes. The renewable
energy project will eliminate up to six million tons of carbon emissions each
year, the equivalent of taking 60,000 cars off the road.

South Fork Wind also includes the first U.S.-built offshore wind substation, a
topside structure that collects the power produced by wind turbines and connects
it to the grid. An onshore export cable system that links the project to the
Long Island Power Authority energy grid was completed earlier in 2023.

Danish renewables giant Ørsted is jointly developing the offshore wind farm with
Massachusetts-based energy provider Eversource.
