The Asilomar Hotel & Conference Grounds captivates guests with its historic and
rustic charm, beamed ceilings, and cozy gathering spots with fireplaces. Nestled
in a picturesque coastal location, the hotel is a stone's throw from the beach
and offers scenic views, particularly along the 17-mile drive. While the service
receives mixed reviews and some guests have called out maintenance and
cleanliness issues in the rooms, the majority find the accommodations tidy and
the setting serene. Despite some facilities being unavailable and concerns over
value, the natural surroundings provide a tranquil retreat for many travelers.

Stately State Park on the Beach

We wanted to visit the Monterey area and found the Asilomar State Beach Hotel
and Conference Grounds to be a perfect getaway base to do that. It is a
sprawling property located on the beach with a rustic stately vibe. We went down
to watch the sunset every evening. Wonderful.

Beautiful and big

The Hotel is very beautiful with lots of open spaces. Every corner is amazing.
This is a place where you feel at peace. It is a walking distance of the sea,
where you will find a nice trail. The main office is gorgeous and I was very
happy to take my breakfast there.

A hotel stay out of the ordinary. A great value.

My stay at the Asilomar Hotel was fine but a different experience than staying
in a standard hotel.

It is rustic with no AC (not always needed). It was a little difficult finding
my room because I was directed to park in a different parking lot than the one
adjacent to my room. (The facility is spread out over a large park like
setting).

I needed an iron and while the room did not have one, the staff brought me one
shortly after I called for one.

There was a small amount of ants encountered in the bathroom one day but
remember the “park-like” setting.

The facility offers much for naturalists and folks who want to escape from the
regular day to day. Not having a tv was welcome.

Most importantly, the room prices don’t change drastically when a large event
comes to town which was the draw for me.

So gross…seriously this place is awful.

So gross and awful. How is this place in business? Rooms disgusting. Carpet
filthy. Curtains dripping with dirt. I honestly don’t know what I’m doing here.
Never again. Outside of the beautiful location this is a dump. Pure and
simple………..

Amenities and Service Declining

My parents have been coming here for over two decades, sometimes for conferences
but mostly for family getaways.

While the location is still incredible, the accommodations and service have
declined significantly over the years.

This past weekend I came here with my mother, wife, and our 3yo son.

When we were looking for my son's car before leaving, my wife found a
syringe/needle under one of the cabinets in the main living room of our cottage
(see attached pics)

This is incredibly disturbing, especially when traveling with a small child. Not
only is this extremely dangerous, but it is also a reflection of the
uncleanliness and lack of attention to basic housekeeping standards.

The manager at the front desk responded with complete indifference when we
checked out and showed her these pictures.

My mother was quite saddened by this experience as this has usually been a place
of nostalgia and positive memories for our family.

Be very cautious coming here

Please invest in upkeep and maintenance

This is a great place and understood lodging was rustic. My only complaint is
the lights in the room have some switches missing so you turn off by loosening
the light bulb. Very few outlets for a family who wants tho charge their
devices. Sink missing a stopper and toilet needs to be replaced they jerryigged
it and after flush the water runs continuously sometimes. Too much cutting
corners on upkeep and maintenance. Light on corner of building is out so hard to
see where walking at night. Beyond that enjoyed my stay.

Great time so far

Beds were very comfortable and room was spacious. Breakfast was a wonderful
experience - lots of good food, plus we met several very interesting people at
our table. I loved being able to walk to the beach to watch the sunset. Only
frustration was their wifi wasn't working in our area the first night.

Average, uninspiring room, Lovely coastal dunes boardwalk

Average, uninspiring but only scratched surface i think.

Stayed 1 night on a road trip, where we wanted to stay in monterrey area at a
reasonable price. I suspect there is far more here than just a basic room in
what seemed like multiple conference facilities - but was happy in just
delivering the simple room on the coast.

booked standard room, and it delivered as advertised a basic comfortable room,
with few amenities no tv, but working low speed wifi. Had a balcony with an
uninspiring view of other hotel buildings and a tree, but it was quiet and
enjoyed sitting out for a while.

The whole resort felt like a sprawling complex, and the one way road system was
far from logical, but after checking in, with a map easy enough to drive to
room, and park just outside. The complex is walkable with a 5 min walk back to
the central buildings including a nice spacious lobby lounge with comfortable
arm chairs, and small shop selling deli end snacks and lovely fresh coffee. We
didnt go to dinner as there was only a 1 hour window time which didnt suit, and
seemed overpriced for the description so ate own food in the room.

The highlight was the dunes boardwalk connected to the grounds through the state
park/natural preserve and we spent a pleasant hour, doing the short walk to the
beach over the dunes, sitting on the numerous benches and enjoying the evening
in a natural surrounding.

overall i wouldnt rush to return, but it was a decent price for a basic room
close to the beach, and after visiting cannery row during the day was glad had
stayed away somewhere quiet.

Relaxing, quiet and pleasant with great access to beach and trails.

Room is clean well appointed everything works. I’ve stayed here many times and
there is allot of variation in the rooms. If you can, opt for a room with a
view. Spindrift South is a good option. It’s a short walk through the dunes to
the beach and various trails. Relaxing, quiet and pleasant

disappointing

We had called about 9 months before our intended dates, requesting to stay in a
specific building. Was advised to make our reservation 6 months before dates for
best chance to get requested room, which we did.
Of course we didn't get our requested building, which was extremely
disappointing. We had paid the extra charge for an ocean view room and were sent
to the far end of the grounds for the room. The room was very dirty. We found
cheerios and hair ties on the floor, as well as dust & dirt. The room was 2 beds
but was stocked like it was intended for one person. One blanket, one wash cloth
..though there were multiple towels.
There were always bags of dirty laundry & garbage lined up along the outside
wall of the building we were in also.
The grounds are beautiful, but I'm unsure if I would go there again. I didn't
feel like the explanation given about the room request was valid and there was a
real sense that the clerk could care less about our request.
