HOW HARMFUL IS EMOTIONAL CHEATING?

Is emotional betrayal as damaging to a relationship as physical betrayal?
Unfortunately, it is often difficult to save a relationship after a betrayal. It
can destroy trust between partners and cause great pain. Of course, it is less
painful than physical cheating or going to a sex club or a prostitute.

1. UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN AFFAIRS.

There are clear differences between emotional and physical relationships:

 * In a physical relationship, you or your partner have been intimate with
   another person and betrayed him or her.
 * In an emotional relationship, there need not have been physical contact. You
   may never meet the person in real life. However, you are sharing thoughts and
   feelings with this person that could damage your current relationship.


2. HOW EMOTIONAL AFFAIRS AFFECT RELATIONSHIPS.

Emotional affairs can negatively affect relationships in many ways.

 * Firstly, an emotional affair causes a rift between you and your partner. Your
   partner is likely to feel betrayed and hurt by the relationship.
 * In a romantic relationship, you may confide to a stranger intimate details
   that you do not share with your partner.
 * You may consider ending your current relationship and leaving your partner
   for good because of the affair.
 * You may also feel hurt, betrayed or frightened.


3. WHY EMOTIONAL CHEATING IS DANGEROUS.

Some people think that romantic relationships are not dangerous because they are
not physical. However, there are other aspects to consider.

 * If the relationship is online, you may be sharing intimate and personal
   things with a stranger who could take advantage of you, your family or one of
   your other relationships, such as your boss.
 * You may be blackmailed into a romantic relationship.
 * This affair may destroy your marriage or relationship. Your children may turn
   their backs on you.
 * You may become emotionally involved with someone who has no interest in you.
 * You could put your career at risk and jeopardise your chances of promotion.
   Your boss may find out about the affair and fire you.


4. RISKS OF EMOTIONAL BETRAYAL.

Romantic relationships involve many risks.

 * The main problem is that romantic relationships bring secrets and lies into
   your life. If the cheating continues, your relationship suffers. You fear
   that your partner will find out about the new person. You try to hide him/her
   and the relationship.
 * There is a risk of falling in love with the other person. And if you fall in
   love, how will your family react? Will your current relationship last or end?
 * Another risk is that you may be tempted to turn an emotional relationship
   into a physical one. This can entail many dangers, such as the possibility of
   blackmail, the transmission of STIs and the risk of pregnancy. You may find
   yourself in the middle of your new love's relationship with another partner,
   which can lead to jealousy and revenge.
 * The risk of losing your current partner to an affair is high. He/she may not
   be able to forgive you. Are you able to cope with a separation, divorce or
   the payment of alimony? Are you ready to end a relationship because you have
   an emotional attachment to another person that may not be genuine?

Emotional betrayal can destroy a relationship. It can cause wounds that take a
long time to heal and sometimes the relationship does not survive. Before
getting involved in a romantic relationship, consider the risks and possible
consequences.
