We create Future Tech Download WHAT WE DO FOR THE WORLD’S CYBERSECURITY The essentials from Kaspersky’s Sustainable Development Report for the year 2021 and the first half of 2022. For 25 years we have been enabling people’s security in the digital world. We develop a wide range of protective solutions for both private users and large industrial enterprises. We develop educational products — from those teaching the basics of cybersecurity, to training courses for highly-skilled developers. We also work on Cyber Immunity — an approach aimed at constructing digital systems in such a way that carrying out a cyberattack would cost more than the amount of possible damage or profit to the attackers. Our own operating system — KasperskyOS — is built on this security-by-design principle, and has already proven helpful in the protection of the Internet of Things and smart cities. Let us share some of our main accomplishments with you. WE MAKE OUR PROCESSES TRANSPARENT AND PROTECT DATA 1 99% of our contract partners have been in the market for at least three years We don’t work with companies with neither experience nor reputation WE HAVE OPENED NINE TRANSPARENCY CENTERS WORLDWIDE SINCE 2018 These are visitor centers where we inform people about our data management procedures and provide access to the source code of our solutions. Since their inception, our Transparency Centers have handled 31 client requests 100% of the patent actions filed against our company in the U.S.A. over the course of 17 years were successfully defended in court Here is the story of how we defeated one such patent troll ZERO COURT ORDERS AGAINST THE COMPANY, OUR EMPLOYEES OR PARTNERS REGARDING VIOLATIONS OF ANTI-CORRUPTION LAWS Kaspersky does not accept any form of bribery or corruption 0major violations of personal data legislation from 2021–2022 Case in point How we defeated a patent troll Read Kaspersky frequently has to defend its rights in relation to patent lawsuits initiated by patent trolls. In April 2021, Kaspersky received a summons in a suit from a patent troll called Cybersoft IP, LLC. We estimated that in the worst-case scenario, potential damages could amount to $500,000. The plaintiff insisted that our product, Kaspersky Secure Mail Gateway, was in violation of a network security patent for a technology that allows communicated data on a user device to be checked. The patent pertains to a personal firewall-type solution implemented on a user device through which network data is intercepted and scanned. But similar network traffic filtering solutions are well-known and have been in use for a long time. The lawsuit seemed like a risky one for us at first sight. Cybersoft IP, LLC offered to close the case for $90,000 and intimidated us with litigation concerning further patents, but this is not the kind of deal our company makes. However, after analyzing the patent we saw that not all elements of the patent claim were disclosed in the description, and nor were they understandable to specialists in the field, which in many jurisdictions is grounds to revoke the patent. We were able to have all claims revoked in court, while the patent troll had to acknowledge the proceedings had no grounding, choosing to settle the case. Kaspersky bore the legal costs, which amounted to around $150,000, but we proved we were right: we put the troll in its place, and demonstrated to other potential plaintiffs that our company is not an easy target. WE ASSIST IN THE INVESTIGATION OF CYBERCRIMES AND WE PROTECT USERS AND CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE AGAINST THREATS 2 7 high-profile arrests of cybercriminals were made in four countries thanks to active cyber-expertise exchanges between Kaspersky and INTERPOL. Read here about how we helped prevent a cyber-heist from taking place in a central bank in Latin America MORE THAN 1.5 MILLION USERS worldwide have been able to decrypt their data since 2016 with the help of the No More Ransom anti-ransomware initiative co-founded by Kaspersky Over 750 thousand people across 24 Russian cities attended our webinars on internet safety for children MORE THAN 100 KASPERSKYOS-BASED PILOT PROJECTS WERE LAUNCHED BY KASPERSKY IN RUSSIA IN 2021, AND IN 2022 WE BEGAN LAUNCHING OUR FIRST PILOTS IN THE MIDDLE EAST Our pilot projects are primarily employed in the metallurgy, oil and gas, mechanical engineering, and metalworking industries, as well as in government institutions and educational establishments More than 687 million attacks launched from internet resources located in various countries worldwide were thwarted by Kaspersky’s solutions from November 2020 to October 2021 Case in point How we prevented a central bank heist Read In 2021, Kaspersky’s experts discovered stolen data showing that a group of cybercriminals had infiltrated the infrastructure of a Latin American country’s central bank. The group were looking for partners to follow through with the attack. This type of collaboration has been quite common in the last two years; one group hacks into an organization, another encrypts and steals the data, while a third group demands the ransom and handles the financial side. Our experts analyzed the data and discovered that the perpetrators had access to the entire infrastructure, including the international financial transfer system. Kaspersky promptly notified INTERPOL and the International Payments Framework. After a joint investigation, all vulnerabilities within the corporate network were closed, thereby halting the preparations for the planned attack. Our seamless cooperation was instrumental in stopping the perpetrators before the organization suffered real losses. WE REDUCE OUR IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT 3 We reduced our emissions by 81% from 2019 to 2021 after cutting down on air travel (from 5085 flights in 2019 to 1460 in 2021) WE HAVE SAVED UP TO 50% OF WATER USAGE each month in our Moscow office following the installation of new sensors on our water supply facilities 50% less physical media sales of Kaspersky products in favor of digital products from 2021–2022 8,14 tons out of 172.4 tons of Class IV waste were recycled in 2021. In the first half of 2022 — 2.56 out of 218.2 tons were recycled. Read on to learn about how we instruct our employees on waste sorting in the office to ensure that as much waste as possible is recycled Case in point How we used an online game to teach our employees about waste sorting Read In 2021–2022 we started implementing a waste sorting and collection system in the office. The first step was to instruct the employees on how to properly sort waste. We started with a video tutorial illustrating the main office waste categories, and we placed informational posters above the containers in every kitchen/dining area. We then developed an FAQ list featuring some of the trickiest and most frequent questions about waste: why sort it, what is produced from recycled waste, and so on. We provided training for the cleaning personnel on how to collect and sort the waste bags. We also invited Irina Kozlovskikh from the charity Vtoroye Dykhanie (Second Breath) to give a lecture to our employees during which she talked about how separate waste collection works in Moscow and who collects waste from Kaspersky’s office. The lecture ended with a Q&A session. To ensure that all the information provided would sink in, we decided to reinforce it with an unusual game. On Earth Day, April 22, 2022, we launched an online game called Trash Ninja, available to all employees. The premise is to help your colleagues better navigate office waste. The game has fairly simple rules, so it can be used to challenge coworkers and compete for the title of waste sorting guru — or Trash Ninja. As a result, our Moscow office employees learned how to properly sort waste — not only in the office but also at home. WE PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES FOR OUR EMPLOYEES AND RECRUIT PERSONNEL FOR THE IT FIELD 4 26% of employees at Kaspersky are women, there is 17% of women in our development team MORE THAN 40% OF ALL OUR EMPLOYEES have completed training in optional courses improving their qualifications — a total of 28,508 hours Over 6000 students from all over the world have taken part in the Secur’IT Cup competition since 2018; winners receive $10,000 grants OVER 100 PARTNER UNIVERSITIES IN 71 COUNTRIES ALREADY SUPPORT KASPERSKY.ACADEMY, OUR EDUCATIONAL PROJECT ON INFORMATION SECURITY 25 students went on to become employed in Kaspersky’s European and Singapore offices thanks to its global internship program launched in 2021. Two alumni of Kaspersky’s Math Vertical classes now work in Kaspersky’s R&D department while simultaneously pursuing higher education — read more about their trajectory here Case in point How tenth-graders made it into Kaspersky Read In October 2017, Moscow’s Department of Education and Science gave the go-ahead for a new educational program — Math Vertical — to be introduced across Moscow’s schools. The program involves the advanced study of mathematics from grades seven through nine. Kaspersky suggested enhancing the Math Vertical with a special course on the Basics of Information Security, consisting of several key blocks such as programming basics, an introduction to state-of-the-art high technologies, and advice on security in cyberspace. The authorities selected School No. 1409 as the one to be mentored under the company’s patronage, and named the experimental program Kaspersky’s Math Vertical. Upon completing the program, the tenth-graders of Kaspersky’s Math Vertical undertake an internship with the company where they are given specific production tasks to solve. In 2019, the internship attracted three high school students; in 2022 there were already 12 of them. After completing our internship, two of the students went on to college specializing in IТ, and now simultaneously work in Kaspersky’s R&D department and pursue higher education.
