Now Patricia Scanlan is famous for her Chick Lit style of writing and I almost
always pre-order her books before they come out. This book was no different;
however I was surprised when I received her latest novel. I was expecting the
usual bumper edition hardback, and instead I got a very small hardback
consisting of just over 250 pages. However, I didn't let this put me off and got
stuck into the book.
We meet Alison Dunwoody who is working and living in America. She is living the
high life with expensive clothes, designer handbags and high-profile boyfriend
to match. However when the recession hits, she is one of the thousands that get
laid off and find herself out of work with her savings dwindling rapidly. She is
forced to give up her lovely apartment and instead move to a small studio flat.
Meanwhile over in Ireland her elder sister Olivia is flat out managing her three
children, husband, ageing relatives and her Mum and Dad. She is planning a party
for her Mum Esther who turns 70 over the Christmas period. It's all she can do
to keep it together and with so much on the last thing she needs to do is argue
with her sister to try and persuade her to come over to celebrate with the
family.
Olivia has kept her unemployment from her parents and family and decides to go
home for the party to spend Christmas with her family. However since moving into
her new apartment (albeit small) she has found an unlikely friendship with man
called JJ who lives upstairs. She does however make the trip home for the
surprise for her Mam. Going home is the last thing she wants, especially since
finding friendship with JJ but she goes anyway. What she finds when she arrives
home surprises her. Will she return to America or stay back at home in Ireland?
Will Olivia and her get along okay and how will she feel hiding her secrets from
her family?
The story itself was lovely with real old fashioned morals running through it
and has been perfectly timed to be published with the current financial
situation both in the UK and the USA. Although the book was smaller than I
expected, and only took me a matter of hours to read I cannot fault it. The
writing was fantastic, the story incredibly real and it was a heart-warming
tale. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to her next; although I
hope this time it will be a standard size Hardback.
I can understand everybodys comments regarding the fact that they felt letdown,
I understand, but to be honest I think the only letdown was the price. Maybe
they should have marketed this a little cheaper or maybe produced in paperback
to save on costs and charges. Overall though the writing itself was brilliant.

Alison left Ireland for New York 8 years ago. With hard work and a steely
determination her career had advanced to a prestigious position as a wealth
manager in Wall Street with a smart apartment and a casual relationship with
Jonathan, born to affluence and one of the social elite. They both lived the
high life. Work was her consuming passion that precluded notions of settling
down to a family life. This was the situation her older sister, Olivia, had back
in the small fishing village in Ireland they both grew up. Olivia had three
young children, a busy husband, elderly relatives to look after, a household to
run as well as a part time job. Alison had little contact with her family back
home due to her work and her affluent life-style. Olivia often resented her
sister's self-centred attitude given her own lengthy, daily schedule.
Suddenly, Alison's world fell apart. The collapse of the American banking system
led to Alison losing her job and with her savings dwindling she had to move into
a friend's studio apartment, described by the shallow Jonathan as 'living in an
egg box'. He was no help. He didn't do 'failure' or 'losers'. Alison felt
lonely, scared and oppressed, unfamiliar emotions. Her thoughts drifted to her
home in Ireland. Alison and Olivia had organised a surprise 70th birthday party
for their mother and Alison was flying over to attend. Olivia felt like the
prodigal son's brother as her home-coming queen of a sister was breezing in and
out. Shortly before she leaves for home, Alison meets a fellow Irishman, JJ, who
is a neighbour and the antithesis of Jonathan. She is determined to keep her
predicament secret from her family during her visit.
Arriving back home, things become very different. Patricia Scanlan describes a
close-knit loving family that exudes warmth and affection. The spirit of
Christmas is approaching as is the surprise party. The characters and location
are drawn to the point where I felt part of the proceedings. Relations between
family members are sometimes tense and not without humour, but the overriding
atmosphere is one of the ties of kinship, one that Alison has missed. The party,
Christmas Eve and Christmas day are charmingly depicted, especially with the
excited, expectant children.
This is an easy read that demonstrates how fragile life can be and what is of
real importance, deep-down. It is a story the author relates of relationships
and situations, and how they can change through choice, faith and providence.
The epilogue helps to clarify matters. Extremely enjoyable and well-written.

Yes, it's short. Yes, it's small. But oh, what a wonderful story. Capturing not
only the essence of the Christmas wonder, but the joy and safety of close family
ties, the gift of being loved and loving back.
In a world which is becoming more and more materialistic, we all need to be
reminded of what really matters in life. Also the most successful and on top of
the world careerwise, need love and security, even if it may take a crisis to
realize.
Irish Alison has worked hard to build a career in New York. She has a beautiful
apartment, handsome boyfriend, enjoys exotic holidays and is on the whole
leading the high city life. Visits to her parents, sister & family in Ireland
are far between, until the financial crisis hits. Alison looses her job and most
of her savings. She has to sub-let her apartment and move to a studio. Jobs seem
impossibe to get; and her world is turned upside down.
For Alison's mother Esther's 70th birthday a celebration has long been planned
by Alison and her sister Olivia. But what was meant as a short birthday visit to
Ireland, is extended to a full and unforgettable family Christmas holiday,
changing Alison's life forever.
Love and sorrow. Friendship and loneliness. Giving and receiving. In the cold
Irish winter, Esther's kitchen is warm and snug and family ties as strong and
loving as ever.
Beautifully written, especially the heartwarming description of childrens'
innocent Christmas magic, this lovely little book is a joy to read and the
perfect Christmas gift!
