LAND OF THE GIANTS

This article was originally published in The Courier Mail in Brisbane.
Azure waters, forested mountain slopes and picturesque villages converge where
the borders of Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Uganda come
together north of Lake Tanganyika in the middle of Africa. That this is
gorilla-visiting headquarters of the world is a […]

TALES OF THE TUNDRA

Though hulking, muskoxen are capable of navigating precarious situations. Photo:
Stephen G. Maka Photography A Wildlife Tour of Canada’s Northwest You’d think
300,000 caribou would be easy to spot, but we’d gone nearly a week without a
glimpse of the herd. “I have a gut feeling today’s the day,” uttered Tom, a
veteran of the […]

POLAR BEAR EXPERIENCES RICH IN NORTHERN MANITOBA

Northern Manitoba is the place to be in October when the great white hunters
roam the tundra. In autumn the great white polar bears gather on the shores of
Hudson Bay waiting for the bay to freeze.  BY CATHERINE M. SENECAL SPECIAL TO
THE STAR We could see only three metres of icy road out […]

THE DESTINATIONS

HEAD FOR BORNEO

When you step into the round Bidayuh head-house, you are surrounded by bamboo.
It is difficult not to strip down to your loincloth and start dancing in what
appears to be a special celebration.

BARGING ZAIRE

The dictatorial Joseph Mobutu, who ran the country, is now out and the people
have had ongoing fighting, killing and general anarchy in parts of the country
since 1994.

BISON AND BADLANDS

The play of dawn light tints the rock faces a gentle bluish-pink that warms to
red, gradually covering existing layers of purple shale, chestnut sand, orange
iron oxide and white volcanic ash.

TESTIMONIALS

Wild animals don't conform to the human timetable, but ecotourism writers often
leave readers believing that sightings of various beasts are easily come by.
Not, however, Cathy Senecal. With prose that never draws attention to itself,
she writes about the frustrations she experienced during a 14-day trip tracking
caribou through the Northwest Territories. Even on days when her party "didn't
see anything," the writer's sense of enchantment with what she did see comes
shining through. With an eye for telling detail, she allows her readers to feel
the warm sunshine as she lay two hours by a fox den, the Glenfiddich sipped at
base camp by moonlight, and--after finally finding the herd - her tour pilot's
naked run with the elusive caribou. This is an honest, revealing look at
trundling through the tundra.

Judge's comments for First Prize for Canada's Northern Lights Awards for
Excellence in Travel Journalism

Cathy Senecal, with her company Senecal Communications, is an enthusiastic,
results-driven travel media relations expert and content strategist. Within a
very short time, she familiarized herself with our destination and experiences
and was able to create compelling content with immediate results. As she
specializes in outdoor and Northern experiences, she is an invaluable resource
for us.

It has been a pleasure to work with Senecal Communications. The content
marketing strategy created for Rowing The World addressed a need for building a
database, creating awareness and growing sales among rowers who travel in
destinations around the world. Sales doubled within the first year and lists
increased by more than 30%. The fresh, expert, fun and informative content that
Cathy created resulted in high engagement rates among past and potential
clients.

Ruth Marr President, Rowing The World

Cathy is that rare combination of strategic thinker, relationship builder, and
creative force. Her communication skills are exemplary, both in writing and in
engaging an audience. Her work in leading the travel media relations division,
with vision and foresight, took Travel Manitoba light years from where it once
was as a travel destination to where it is today. She mentored and inspired her
staff, and collaborated fully with her colleagues.

Linda Whitfield Vice President of Marketing, Travel Manitoba

Thanks for your story. It was a real reader!

Past Editor Denver Post

The story is beautiful. Very well written. I wouldn't change a word of it.
