IB FASHION & LIFESTYLE CALL FOR CHALLENGES #2

   Description

CALL FOR CHALLENGES #2: TRANSFORMING INDUSTRY PRACTICES –

SUSTAINABILITY & CIRCULARITY INNOVATIONS FOR THE FASHION INDUSTRY

ABOUT THE FASHION & LIFESTYLE PROGRAM

The Innovation Booster Fashion & Lifestyle empowers operational,
technological, and social innovations developed with and for the Swiss
   Fashion and Lifestyle sector.

In alliance with Switzerland Innovation Park Ticino - Lifestyle Tech
Competence Center, our community leverages a unique ecosystem enabling the
dissemination of radical solutions to the challenges of the sector.

   ABSTRACT

The fashion industry, with a major global significance, stands as one of the
least environmentally friendly sectors. Its adoption of the linear fashion
system—characterised by a “take-make-dispose” approach, continues to exploit
scarce natural resources and energy, resulting in substantial pollution. To
address this, fashion companies’ growing advocacy for transitioning to a
circular economy is willing to tackle the current obstacles, aiming for
   sustainable production and consumption.

   FOCUS

Some of the major problem faced by the Fashion Industry in building a
positive environmental footprint can be summarised in:

    * Poor Material and Energy Efficiency: Inefficient use of materials, energy
and water contributes to waste and environmental impact.
    * Production quality: Ensuring to develop real-sustainable raw materials and
implement its usage in the production cycle, matching the same quality
      level of non-sustainable materials.
    * Data & Traceability: Establishing transparent supply chains and tracking
the lifecycle of garments is slowed down by complex by the numerous
third-parties involved and lack of standardisation of collected data.
    * Lack of Circular Design: The industry struggles with designing products
that can be easily recycled or repurposed.
    * Technological Challenges: Adopting sustainable and circular practices
      requires impactful technological innovation.
    * Regulatory Pressures: Compliance with evolving sustainability regulations
      poses challenges, including reporting needs.
    * Internal Stakeholders’ Pressures: Aligning internal stakeholders on the
      same goal represents some difficulties.
    * Financial Pressures: Transitioning to sustainable practices require
substantial investments that need to match with a proper financial
      sustainability over time.
    * Insufficient Human Capital: A skilled workforce is essential for
sustainable and initiatives. Knowledge needs to be build inside and
cross-organisation with specific roles in the organisation as well as
      organically integrated in traditional functions.
    * Lack of External Collaborations: Industry-wide collaboration is necessary
      for systemic change.
    * Consumer-Related Challenges: Educating, communicating, motivating and
incentivise consumers toward sustainable and circular choices remains a
      hurdle.

We are looking for radical innovative solutions to be tested as viable
solutions for a more sustainable and circular Fashion Industry.

Developed solutions to be tested by the Innovation Teams can be in the form
   of products, services or processes.

To ensure to better define an industry challenge to be submitted as a first
input for a potential radical innovative idea to be tested, a specific
problem shall be defined, and a user-centric approach must be used.

The following questions shall be answered in the submission of the industry
challenge to be sent via this jointcreate page on the section ‘Long
   description’:

o  What are the details of the problem experienced?

o  Who is experiencing this problem?

o  How often is the problem experienced?

o  How painful is the problem for the ones experiencing it?

o  Would the ones experiencing this problem be willing to (and be capable of)
paying money to get it resolved?

o  Are there some existing solutions to this problem? If so, why aren’t they
   effective?

o  How a new radical innovative approach might benefit the whole industry in
   resolving the problem?

   YOUR BENEFITS

    * Participate in a transformation journey contributing with new radical
ideas in the innovation of the Fashion & Lifestyle sector
    * Be rewarded with ≈ CHF 25'000.- in case your idea will convince our Jury

CALL #2.2 MODALSPLIT CHALLENGE: INNOVATION IN REGIONAL TRANSPORT TO INCREASE
   THE MODAL SPLIT

Call #2 for Mobility Transformation Project Ideas
   Description

   SUMMARY

Switzerland has the political goal of shifting passenger and freight
transport to sustainable modes of transportation. The shift in traffic volume
from road to rail is documented over time with the modal split. The modal
split represents the market share of various modes of transport and can be
expressed by the distance of the journey or the number of trips. Despite a
steadily improved public transport offering and infrastructure expansion, no
significant increase in the modal split has been observed over the past 20
years. The Federal Office of Transport (FOT) aims to significantly increase
the modal split by 2050 and, according to RAIL 2050, identifies the greatest
potential for increasing the modal split in short- and medium-distance
travel, i.e., regional transport. To achieve this goal, the offering in
regional transport must improve. The five most important factors in choosing
a mode of transport are the quality of the overall offering, travel time,
price, last-mile options, and the complexity of the travel chain (source:
Perspectives on Increasing the Modal Split of Public Transport, 2021). In
this context, it is evident that innovations in regional transport are key to
improving the offering and supporting the increase in the modal split.

   Challenge Partner: Swissrail, RAILplus, RhB

   STARTING POINT

The Rhaetian Railway (RhB) operates routes in regional passenger transport
that offer significant potential for increasing the modal split. Through the
introduction of new technologies such as autonomous trains, RhB aims to
expand and optimize its services. This endeavor poses technical as well as
societal challenges. RhB has formulated 10 questions that must be considered
for the successful introduction of new technologies. Using three specific
application examples (S-Bahn Davos extension, Touristic experience Samaden –
Preda, Automated Parking Facility Landquart), it is shown where there is a
   need for innovation.

   10 QUESTIONS

    1. Technical Reliability: How can we ensure that the systems operate
reliably and that no unexpected errors occur?
    2. Safety Systems: What safety systems are necessary to detect and avoid
potential hazards, such as obstacles on the tracks or protection against
        environmental influences/weather conditions (rockfall, avalanches,
        etc.)?
    3. Communication with Other Trains and Infrastructure: How can autonomous
trains effectively communicate with each other to avoid collisions and
        coordinate train traffic?
    4. Integration into Existing Infrastructure: How can autonomous trains be
seamlessly integrated into the existing system landscape of the RhB
(Rhaetian Railway) without disrupting operations or incurring additional
        costs?
    5. Emergency Scenarios: How should autonomous trains respond to
emergencies, such as technical failures, medical emergencies on board,
or unexpected events on the tracks?
    6. Liability and Legal Framework: Who is responsible if an autonomous train
is involved in an accident? How should legal frameworks be designed to
support the development and deployment of autonomous trains?
    7. Data Protection and Cybersecurity: How can passenger privacy (in
on-demand services) and system security against cyberattacks be
        protected?
    8. Training and Job Loss: What impact will the introduction of autonomous
trains have on the personnel currently needed for train operations and
maintenance? How can retraining and support programs be designed for
        affected workers?
    9. Implementation Time: How quickly can a described use case be realized,
considering technological progress, regulatory frameworks, public
acceptance, and the availability of financial resources?
    10. Business Case: What does a business case look like from an overall
economic perspective for the use cases (from the operator's and
        regional/touristic perspective), including lifecycle considerations?

   WORKING HYPOTHESIS

Since infrastructure expansion in recent years has not led to an increase in
the modal split, additional measures are needed alongside the expansion steps
already approved by parliament. Therefore, improving the service must
continue through innovation in operations. New technologies such as
autonomous trains represent an effective lever for increasing the capacity of
existing infrastructure. This paradigm shift poses challenges that must be
addressed with innovative solutions. Only when quality and safety standards
are assured can current public skepticism be addressed and the offering of
regional passenger transport optimized. The goal of the challenge is to
identify groundbreaking innovations from Switzerland that demonstrate
scalable solutions for improving regional passenger transport, using the
   example of the Rhaetian Railway.
