most difficult song to record the band spent hours working on the bass sound for
the introduction.

Costey recorded Bellamy's left and right-hand parts separately, and processed
them using guitar amps and an Echoplex. For "Ruled By Secrecy", they blended
acoustic piano and a Yamaha CP-80 electric piano. They also processed the piano
with a pitch-shifting DigiTech Whammy pedal and an Echloplex delay effect. įor
"Sing for Absolution", Muse used prepared piano, laying metal objects such as
nails and guitar strings on the piano strings. On "Falling Away With You",
Costey was keen to capture the sound of Bellamy's fingers on the guitar strings
to create an intimate feeling. For "Ruled By Secrecy", they recorded a drum take
in the courtyard outdoors, hoping to capture an unusual ambience, but discarded
the results. They also recorded Wolstenholme diving into the pool, which was
used in the bridge of "Thoughts of a Dying Atheist". For the introduction to
"Apocalypse Please", they recorded two large kick drums in the Grouse Lodge
swimming pool. The group experimented with drum sounds, using a number of
microphones. The bassist, Chris Wolstenholme, split his signal into three
Marshall amps, one clean and two distorted, and blended the results. The
guitarist, Matt Bellamy, used custom Manson guitars and Marshall and Diezel
amps.

He added little reverb, preferring to use the natural ambience recorded by the
microphones. Costey minimised editing to preserve the "human touch" and avoid an
artificial result. To create basic tracks, the band recorded together live, then
focused on overdubs. They then moved to Grouse Lodge, a residential recording
studio in County Westmeath, Ireland, where most of the album was recorded. Muse
and Costey regrouped in early 2003 for 10 days at Livingston Recording Studios,
London, completing the recordings they had made at Air. According to Costey,
Muse wanted to sound like a "colossal, dynamic, epic and powerful rock band".
Costey had worked with acts Muse admired, including Rage Against the Machine and
Audioslave, and wanted to help them find a bigger, more aggressive sound. They
were joined there later by the American producer Rich Costey, who produced the
rest of the album. They began work in late 2002 with the producers John
Cornfield and Paul Reed at Air Studios, London, where they recorded "
Butterflies and Hurricanes" and "Blackout". Muse set aside time to develop their
third album, as their previous recording sessions had been rushed. A
20th-anniversary reissue with bonus tracks was released in November 2023. As of
2018, Absolution had sold more than 3.5 million copies worldwide. It also
produced Muse's first top-ten single, " Time Is Running Out", which reached
number 8 on the UK Singles Chart. Most of the album was recorded at Grouse Lodge
in County Westmeath, Ireland.Ībsolution reached number one on the UK Albums
Chart. It incorporates classical influences, with orchestra on tracks such as "

surly band of sea merchants as smugglers, creating a massive criminal empire. In
Rapture it was illegal to own things like Religious texts, music and art from
the surface unless it was given the official O.K by Andrew Ryan. Within a short
while he owned and operated "Fontaine Fisheries", a fishing company that also
doubled as a sophisticated smuggling ring. The Smuggler Of Raptureįontaine came
to Rapture a poor hood from The Bronx with nothing but big ideas about how he
would turn himself into a millionaire. Fontaine is eventually overrun by little
sisters extracting Adam from his body and is killed.įrank Fontaine is voiced by
Greg Baldwin who also donated his vocal talents as the grossly unpopular Norton
Mapes from F.E.A.R. While Fontaine attacks Ryan through smuggling and his own
industries such as plasmids and fisheries, his Alter ego attacks Ryan as the
political leader of Rapture through Atlas.įontaine consumes so much Adam that he
becomes an almost God-like figure and the main character has to battle it out
against Fontaine at the end of the game. Atlas is nothing more than part of
Fontaine's master plan to seize control of Rapture by turning the poor, the
disenfranchised, the people who showed up believing they would be captains of
industry but ended up pushing brooms, against Ryan. Frank Fontaine admits that
the character "Atlas," the crusading reforming leading a rebellion against
Ryan's increasing authoritarianism as his Ayn Rand Objectivist paradise spins
wildly out of control, is nothing more than a cynically created long con. The
protagonist's only friend in Rapture 'Atlas" is revealed to be Fontaine towards
the end of the game, who has been manipulating the player to do his will.With
the use of the hypnotic trigger phrase "Would you kindly." he is able to force
you to eliminate his only competition, Andrew Ryan so he can take over Rapture.

This uprising caused the downfall of Rapture as a society and created the state
of Rapture as Jack (the player) sees it in 1960. The fight lasted for so long
that it drove Ryan into hiding and eventually caused a massive uprising on New
Years Eve 1959. He started off by gathering together a band of followers in the
poor houses of Apollo Square where he and his family lived, after a while this
group grew beyond Ryan's expectations causing him to lash out against
Atlas.Ītlas responded by rousing his people into a frenzy, which would cause a
riot in Rapture like they'd never seen before. Whatever his job was he
experienced the hypocrisy in Andrew Ryan's Utopia first hand, causing him to
quit and begin a personal crusade against Ryan. What we do know is that he's a
married father of one, perhaps an Irish immigrant contracted by Fontaine
Fisheries as a laborer. To the player, Atlas is a guide through the depths of
Rapture and a constant help in the fight to overthrow the megalomaniac Andrew
Ryan but even through that we learn very little about him. Information regarding
Atlas' past is almost non-existent.

Atlas is the name used by the mysterious renegade that would eventually cause a
full rebellion in Rapture, forcing Andrew Ryan into hiding.
