New Year's Day: Jan 01, 2024 00:00 (185 days, 16 hours, and 7 minutes in the past.) Perihelion is at a planet's closest approach to the sun (Earth: approx.147.1 Million KM - 91,401,983 mi) Aphelion is at a planet's furthest separation from the sun (Earth: approx. 152.1 Million KM - 94,507,803 mi). If you plot the position of the sun in the sky at the same time each day by noting where the shadow of a fixed object falls, you will see the effects of the elipticity of the earth's orbit, the tilt of the earth's axis of rotation relative to the plane of the orbit and the angle between the axis of rotation of the earth and the major axis of the elliptical orbit. That plot, called The Equation of Time gives rise to a figure-8 like path called an analemma. We did that over the course of two years, and you can see the results here. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- OBSERVED Christmas Eve Sunset Christmas Eve Sunset -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sorry, but your browser does not support the video tag click on the frame to see the full res video -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ITEMS OF CURRENT OR CONTINUING INTEREST If you are a Friend of the Family, or even a relative, follow the instructions we have given you. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you are looking for the generic Katz web site Click (http://www.katz.us) here to get to that site. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Last updated 16 Dec 22
