Dr Louise Pryor will examine recent developments and discuss what they are telling us about future possibilities. She will show why many commonly used climate scenarios are of no use, and what we should use instead. Dr Pryor will focus on what spreadsheet practitioners need to know and how they should respond. Spreadsheets, Risk and the Legal Presumption of Correctness The science has been certain for over four decades that complex information presented in spreadsheets is subject to material error. English law however, presumes that software artefacts, including spreadsheets, are presumed to be correct. Barrister Stephen Mason examines this contradiction including its likely permanence and outlines the implications for users of present and future levels of software technology. Generative AI's Critical Risks to Spreadsheets Dr Advait Sarkar, Cambridge University, suggests that Generative AI, with its tendency to "hallucinate" incorrect results, may exacerbate existing spreadsheet risks. On the other hand, it may also provide unprecedented opportunities for users, particularly non-experts, to learn and apply advanced spreadsheet features and greatly increase the scope and complexity of tasks they can successfully achieve. Expressing Spreadsheet Uncertainty with Confidence People deal with uncertainty every day - durations, demands, prices, rates - but it is almost impossible for most users to work with uncertain quantities in spreadsheets. Professor Andy Gordon, University of Edinburgh, will explain recent advances that allow people to perform Bayesian reasoning by building upon their existing spreadsheet skills. Our Speakers Professor Andy Gordon is Chief Science Officer at software synthesis company Cogna. He was formerly a Partner Research Manager at Microsoft Research in Cambridge, UK where he led a diverse team of researchers and engineers to evolve Microsoft Excel. Dr Louise Pryor is an actuary specialising in climate change and sustainability. She is currently Chair of the Ecology Building Society and an Honorary Professor at UCL’s Bartlett School of Sustainable Construction. Dr Advait Sarkar from the University of Cambridge, studies human-computer interaction, with a focus on end-user programming, intelligent systems, and the future of work. This includes research on improving the design of spreadsheets, tools for visualisation, the analysis of data and tools for communication and collaboration in the workplace. Mr Stephen Mason is a barrister with an interest in electronic signatures, authentication, security, electronic evidence, email and internet use and the interception and monitoring of communications. He is an Associate Research Fellow at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies in London.
