I have ADHD too, I know how ridiculously difficult doing pretty much anything is. Untreated ADD/ADHD can be a literal life ruiner. I want to start out by saying that using medication for ADHD does not make you less of a holistic person, nor does it drive a wedge between you and Earth’s remedies. As an herbalist and pharmaceutical skeptic with debilitating ADHD, you can bet that I’ve tried every natural remedy in the books to treat it. The truth is that I was on medication throughout high school, and had a horrible experience with it. I stopped taking it for 5.5 years after graduating, and then started taking a new one. I had to overcome a lot of shame to get myself back into a psychiatrists office, but I’m really glad I did. Using my favorite herbal remedies in conjunction with my medication has made a HUGE difference. I also use them when I take breaks from medication to keep my energy leveled. My experience with treating my own ADHD is what awakened me to what being holistic truly means. Being holistic means considering all of the tools in your toolbox, as well as your strengths, limits, habits and routines already in place. HAVING A HOLISTIC APPROACH ALSO MEANS CONSIDERING THE ENTIRETY OF YOURSELF, RATHER THAN JUST THE NAME OF YOUR DIAGNOSIS. For example, there are different types of ADD/ADHD, and the herbal protocol will be a little different for each of them. People with inattentive type (ADD) might have lower energy levels, feel like their brain is “foggy”, struggle with hygiene or routine, memory, fatigue, and be prone to depressive episodes. In that case, the goal will be to stimulate energy, promote clarity, and then work on attention span and more of the signature ADD symptoms. We achieve this by reaching for herbs like Rhodiola Rosea, which is a stimulant in low doses. Rhodiola enhances the transport of serotonin precursors, tryptophan, and 5-hydroxytryptophan to the brain. You can read more about a study including the use of Rhodiola for ADHD here. Rosemary, Ginkgo biloba, and Ginger are all good options here too. Then, we bring in the neutral nervines like Holy Basil (Tulsi), Ashwagandha and Lemon Balm. Once their energy levels are up, these herbs will help sustain focus and assist working memory. For someone with Hyperactive ADHD, the first goal will be to reign in their energy and level them out. The process is just kind of backwards than the process for folks with inattentive ADD. Hyperactivity is usually combined with symptoms of anxiety, hypervigilance and occasionally OCD. So, we start with herbs like Skullcap and Chamomile paired with Holy Basil to ground the ADHD person, and bring their awareness back to their bodies. It’s important to note that the hyperactive person’s energy levels will likely be all over the place. Bouts of hyperactivity are exhausting! ADHD will sometimes look like being wired followed by extreme fatigue. This shift in energy doesn’t change the herbal protocol, because the idea is to smooth energy out, not necessarily lessen it. Once grounding and calming is taken into consideration, smaller doses of energizing herbs like rhodiola and rosemary can be brought in. Lemon Balm is really the best herb for all types of ADD/ADHD, which is why I mention it over and over! It’s also amazing for people who are on medication. Lemon balm is a salve for the spirit. Just be cautious that you stay hydrated while taking Lemon Balm. It can be dehydrating due to its diuretic actions. Studies have shown that lemon balm can help improve focus and memory by increasing the brain chemical gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). GABA is a neurotransmitter that helps regulate the activity of neurons in the brain. It helps to reduce anxiety, improve concentration, and support memory and learning. Lemon balm also contains several active compounds that have antioxidant properties, which may help protect neurons from damage caused by free radicals. Additionally, lemon balm has been found to reduce stress and improve mood, which may help to improve focus and memory. Another natural remedy you’ve probably heard of is Lions Mane. I’ve found Lions Mane to be very effective at enhancing focus, supporting memory, sustaining energy levels, and boosting vitality overall. If you’re someone who takes medication for their ADHD, these herbs will be very useful to you as well: Damiana: Eases headaches & irritability associated with the comedown from stimulants (including coffee!) Lowers Blood Pressure Mood Boosting Anxiety Reducing Lemon Balm: Smooths out mood instability Enhances & Sustains Focus Mood boosting Anxiety Reducing Assists Digestion & Sleep Chamomile Strong infusion is similar to NSAIDS: Take for headaches, joint, & muscle tension Reduces Agitation & Rigidity Reduces Anxiety Assists Digestion & Sleep BONUS: Increasing the efficacy of stimulant ADHD medication * Magnesium supplements * Vitamin B12 * Staying AWAY from vitamin C until night time. It’s basically an off switch to stimulant medications. * Staying away from coffee. Similarly to Vitamin C, it’s acidity will deactivate your medication. Try green tea instead! * At least 16-20 grams of protein with breakfast. Take with your medication. I’m obsessed with these.
