Journalist Dmitry Muratov smiles while explaining why—and how—he turned his
Nobel Peace Prize medal into meaningful aid for children affected by conflict in
Ukraine.

TAKE A CUE FROM A NOBEL PEACE PRIZE WINNER: PHILANTHROPY REQUIRES TRUST

MICHAEL J. NYENHUIS

PRESIDENT & CEO OF UNICEF USA, RELENTLESSLY PURSUING A MORE EQUITABLE WORLD FOR
EVERY CHILD | CHILD RIGHTS ACTIVIST | THOUGHT LEADER

Published Jun 20, 2023

If you were planning to donate $25, would you rather:

 * (A) Designate the funding for something specific, like a malaria bed net for
a child in an endemic country, or
 * (B) Allow the organization you chose to use it wherever needed most

A lot of people today might choose “A”. It feels more direct. It feels good to
think about something concrete. And many nonprofits today provide easy ways to
give directly in that way.

I want to make the case that you should consider option “B” and, perhaps, take a
cue from Dmitry Muratov, the Russian journalist who one year ago auctioned off
his Nobel Peace Prize medal for more than $100 million. He didn’t do it to get
rich. He did it to give the money to UNICEF to support those impacted by the war
in Ukraine. UNICEF used those funds to aid people in Ukraine, refugees who fled
to neighboring countries and children in parts of Africa.

Africa? Why Africa? Children and families in the region known as the Horn of
Africa have been suffering a devastating food crisis caused by years of drought.
They were heavily dependent on grain imports from Ukraine, which were cut off by
the war. The hunger crisis there got much, much worse. UNICEF’s teams witnessed
this firsthand and we made the case to Mr. Muratov that children in this part of
Africa were also impacted by the war.

Can we use a portion of the proceeds from the auction for children in Africa?
“Use it as you see fit”, he told us. Muratov trusted UNICEF’s expertise to know
how best to use the funds. That’s a good model.

Today is #WorldRefugeeDay, so a good day to focus on people displaced from their
homes. The U.N.’s refugee agency has just updated the number of people forcibly
displaced. It is up to an all-time high—more than 108 million, 43 million of
them children. This includes refugees—those who have crossed into another
country seeking safety—and what we call “internally displaced people,” who are
displaced in their own countries.

Many of those who are displaced are in places very few people know about or are
aware of. Take Burkina Faso, for example. Two million people, including 1
million children, are displaced in Burkina Faso, the result of conflict in the
north of the country and climate-driven drought. Others have crossed neighboring
borders as refugees. And, as an example of the complexity of the situation,
Burkina Faso also hosts refugees that have sought safety from conflict in
neighboring Mali.

Who is providing services to all these people on the move? UNICEF, for one. We
are one of the primary relief agencies active there. But there is little media
attention on this crisis and very few donors are designating their dollars to
support relief efforts there. So, UNICEF uses funds from donors who say … “Use
this where needed most” … to fund the work there.

Over the past two years, 90 percent of emergency funds donated to UNICEF USA
have been for three emergencies: COVID, Afghanistan and Ukraine. The resources
were needed and well used. But we still need to serve children in places like
Burkina Faso and we are dependent on unrestricted dollars to meet those needs.

That conflict gets less airtime than other conflicts that are often in the news,
so those who can help may not know about it. But UNICEF knows. The organization
has operated in Burkina Faso since 1961. For more than 6 decades UNICEF has
worked in partnership with governments, community organizations and civil
society in Burkina Faso. We saw the conflict unfold and we knew how to respond
quickly.

Tell you what. I’ll make a deal with you. If you really want to designate your
$25 for a specific project, go ahead. But make another $25 donation to an
organization you trust and tell them: use it where it’s needed most.

Having read and embraced Steven Covey’s Speed of Trust (among others), thank you
for this post. It’s a great reminder that organizations all have a Mission. And
it’s that Mission, the North Star, that guides the actions of the organization.
Choosing Option B says - I trust that you are going to spend my donation to
further your mission. The world and its challenges are far too complex for us to
have to micromanage how organizations with great missions are going to allocate
their funding. That is their job, and it is incumbent on us to trust that they
will fulfill it! I appreciate the timeliness of this post and trust it will
inspire others to think about how we collectively spend our precious time and
resources to make a positive impact on this planet.

This really is an amazing point that you’re making about trust. When you donate
money to any non profit organization, you’re trusting them to use that money
correctly and that the money is being used for the purposes that they subscribe
to performing. I think in today’s world we have become so distrusting of others,
what the motives are, the agendas the hidden things that we’re not aware.
Therefore we become hesitant to trust and help those who need help. This is a
great point for me to think about for myself. Do I trust enough to share my
money appropriately and properly. I think we have to stand back and say to
ourselves, God honors and will respect our giving. It is not up to us to judge
or question the trustworthiness. I think it’s up to us to take that step of
faith and trust the other individual and donate the funds believing that they’re
going to generate results. I am touched by the story and grateful I took the
time to read about the $100 million auction for the noble prize, and it speaks
volumes of the individuals explicit trust that the money would be used
appropriately.

Well educated women and men who are concerned about their own country's and
World conditions ldonate ss I do, every year--and even through their RMD. I
trust the leadership at UNICEF to decide where the funds would best--and
probably, most urgently--be used. (And I also contributed in the same way to
Doctors without Borders, a marvelous organization whose "books" re: where the
funds GO are completely open for contributors' viewing. Thank you for your
dedification, wisdom and work.
