Designed by Baltimore's own Lawrence Hall Fowler, the War Memorial was dedicated April 5, 1925, as "... a place of meeting for all veteran, patriotic, and civic organizations, a depository for trophies of wars in which our country has engaged, and a tribute to those citizens of Maryland who gave their lives and their services in World War I." The War Memorial was rededicated in 1977 by Mayor William Schaefer as a consecration to the Marylanders who gave their lives in all 20th-century wars. The building serves as a place of remembrance for fallen soldiers and as an administrative office for veteran outreach organizations. The War Memorial Commission was created under both State and City law to operate the War Memorial building. The Commission has custody and supervision of the War Memorial Building and the adjacent War Memorial Plaza. The building is a Baltimore City landmark and a major component in the National Register Business and Government Historic District. Exhibit space is also located on the premises. The collection consists of loaned and donated artifacts from various wars in which Marylanders have fought. In addition, the War Memorial frequently rents temporary exhibits from museums around the country. Please feel free to contact us if you want to donate or loan an artifact or exhibit to the War Memorial. RESERVE A ROOM The space may be utilized for certain municipal functions and serves as a repository for documents relating to World War II. View information and instructions on how to reserve a room for an event or activity. However, if you have any questions or concerns regarding reserving a room or the War Memorial in general feel free to email us. WAR MEMORIAL ARTS INITIATIVE The War Memorial Arts Initiative presents a broad spectrum of music and the arts in downtown Baltimore. Primarily featuring mostly local artists, the Initiative serves to strengthen the neighborhoods surrounding the City Hall Campus by promoting civic engagement through a shared culture while honoring and serving veterans. Baltimore's Department of General Services administers the arts initiative and maintains the War Memorial on behalf of the War Memorial Commission. We seek to host weekly cultural events (concerts, lectures, classes, seminars) with a focus on local artists open to and for the general public. We vigorously host commemorative events for the veterans' community. For more information, please visit The War Memorial Arts Initiative website.
