TODAY

A teen gunman killed at least 19 children and two adults at an elementary school
in Uvalde, Texas. President Biden implored Americans to “stand up to the gun
lobby” — leading Tucker Carlson to accuse him of “desecrating the memory of
murdered children.” Two Trump-backed candidates suffered poignant losses in
Georgia’s Republican primaries. And the Partygate heat is back on for the U.K.’s
Boris Johnson. All this and more in today’s PDB.

IMPORTANT

Recurring Nightmare

TEEN GUNMAN KILLS AT LEAST 21 AT TEXAS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

An 18-year-old gunman murdered at least 19 children and two teachers at the Robb
Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. His rampage began when he shot his
grandmother Tuesday morning. After fleeing that scene the armor-clad gunman
crashed his car near the school, which has children in second through fourth
grades, and got out of the vehicle brandishing two assault rifles. He managed to
get past law enforcement officers and walked from classroom to classroom
shooting at random before he was eventually killed by officers. Parents rushed
to the civic center for news. One man sobbed into his phone: “She is gone.”

Gun Lobby

AFTER THE SHOOTING: POLITICAL SNIPING

“To lose a child is like having a piece of your soul ripped away,” said
President Joe Biden, speaking from experience. He then asked, “When in God’s
name are we going to stand up to the gun lobby?” Speaking to the Senate,
Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy said, “I’m here on this floor to beg, to literally
get down on my hands and knees and beg my colleagues … Work with us to find a
way to pass laws that make this less likely.” Meanwhile, Fox News pundit Tucker
Carlson accused Biden of “desecrating the memory of murdered children with tired
DNC talking points.” (Source: CNBC)

Georgia on His Mind

TRUMP SUFFERS BIGGEST SETBACK YET IN GEORGIA PRIMARIES

Gov. Brian Kemp, who certified the state’s 2020 results against former President
Donald Trump’s wishes, beat Trump-endorsed David Perdue by more than 50
percentage points in the Republican gubernatorial primary. He’ll go up against
voting rights campaigner Stacey Abrams in one of November’s most-watched
contests. Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, who famously refused to “find”
votes for Trump, also beat his Trump-backed challenger. The only respite for the
former president came from Herschel Walker, who won his Senate primary. His
record of domestic abuse may be a bigger issue when he goes up against Sen.
Raphael Warnock in the midterms. (Sources: NYT, The Guardian)

Partygate

RELEASE OF REPORT INTO LOCKDOWN PARTIES HEAPS PRESSURE ON UK PM

Hard copies of Sue Gray’s report into a series of illegal drinking parties held
at Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s official residence during COVID-19 lockdowns
in 2020 were delivered to 10 Downing Street this morning. The report is expected
to be released later today. Yesterday it emerged that some of the parties were
so crowded that people had to sit on one another’s laps. To deflect attention
from his presence at the parties, Johnson and Rishi Sunak, his equally
implicated finance minister, are expected to announce a multibillion pound cost
of living rescue package tomorrow. Whether it works remains to be seen. (Source:

HERE ARE SOME THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT TODAY:

Two years later. On the second anniversary of George Floyd’s death, President
Biden is expected to issue an executive order requiring all federal agencies to
revise their use-of-force policies. (Source: NYT) Closure. The bodies of four of
the eight miners who went missing when a Canadian-owned zinc mine in Burkina
Faso flooded on April 16 have been found. (Source: Al Jazeera) ‘Basketball
questions don’t matter.’ Steve Kerr, head coach of the Golden State Warriors,
refused to talk about basketball during a team news conference. Instead he
focused on the Texas school shooting, calling out “50 senators” for “holding
America hostage.” (Source: BBC)

MALE AFGHAN NEWS ANCHORS MASK UP TO SUPPORT FEMALE COLLEAGUES

On Sunday, the Taliban’s Ministry of Propagation of Virtue and Prevention of
Vice ordered all female TV presenters to cover their faces while on screen.
After calling an office meeting, according to Lema Spesali, a news anchor for
1TV in Kabul, her station “decided that male colleagues should also wear masks
and stand by female colleagues.” Several other TV stations have followed suit.
“It’s a great act,” said Sahar Fetrat, an Afghan feminist activist. “It’s one of
the few instances where Afghan men are doing something symbolic because all the
resistance and protests against the veil so far has been by women.” (Source: The
Guardian)

Flamethrower

ATWOOD REVEALS ‘UNBURNABLE’ EDITION OF ‘THE HANDMAID’S TALE’

Featuring a Cinefoil dust jacket, heatshield foil pages, nickel wire stitching
and Kapton high-temperature adhesive, the unique edition can withstand
temperatures of 2,600 degrees Fahrenheit. Margaret Atwood, its 82-year-old,
two-time Booker Prize winning author, even took to it with a flamethrower. The
dystopian novel is set in a world where fertile women are stripped of all rights
and seen only as reproductive factories. It’s one of the books most often
challenged or banned in U.S. schools. The unburnable edition is being auctioned
by Sotheby’s and all proceeds will aid Pen America’s “work in support of free
expression.” (Sources: The Hill, The Guardian)

Skydiving Salamanders

TREE-DWELLING SALAMANDERS ASSUME ‘PARACHUTING POSTURE’ AS THEY FALL

After noticing that wandering salamanders (Aneides vagrans) jumped from his hand
with their limbs splayed like a skydiver’s, University of Florida biologist
Christian Brown decided to test his hypothesis in a wind tunnel. “We were a bit
shocked by just how adept they are at controlling their aerial behaviors,” said
Brown. “They could not only keep themselves upright, but they could maneuver,
bank turns and right themselves when they went upside down.” When they tested
other species, some tree-dwelling salamanders occasionally tried parachuting —
but the wandering salamander, which lives 200 feet above ground in California’s
redwood forests, was the most skilled. (Source: New Scientist)

Preserved for Posterity

PIONEERING 19TH CENTURY FEMALE PALEONTOLOGIST HONORED WITH STATUE

In 1811, 12-year-old Mary Anning discovered the 17-foot skeleton of an
ichthyosaur near her home in Lyme Regis, on Britain’s south coast. Twenty-two
years later she became the first person to discover a complete plesiosaur.
Anning helped shape our understanding of prehistoric life — but being female,
working-class and poor meant her work was never recognized. In 2018, Evie
Squire, who was 11 at the time, started campaigning for a statue of Anning.
“It's taken a very long time,” said Squire at the unveiling in Lyme Regis on
Saturday. “I wanted to … make sure she got the recognition she deserved.”

‘Manchester United Are Rubbish’

BBC NEWS APOLOGIZES FOR TICKER MALFUNCTION

Many a true word is said in jest. BBC viewers Tuesday were surprised to see the
headline “Manchester United are rubbish” appear on the ticker at the bottom of
the screen during a report on the French Open tennis championship. Anchor Annita
McVeigh later apologized for the gaffe on air, explaining that “behind the
scenes someone was training to learn how to use the ticker and to put text on
the ticker. So they were just writing random things, not in earnest, and that
comment appeared.” United finished sixth in the Premier League this season with
a measly 58 points. (Source: Reuters)
