It’s super-fast, sleek, easy-to-use, and stylish. Its only real con, against all these pros, is its price. And for many, this will be a dealbreaker. Until recently, we hadn’t found a cheaper alternative that lived up to Dyson’s performance but the GHD Helios comes close. In many respects, it could even be classed as superior. All for half the price. The Dyson hair dryer is a fantastic addition to your grooming regime and offers a huge amount of technology. If you can stretch to buying it, or you think you could ask for it as a present from family members, we highly recommend doing so as you won’t be disappointed. If you can’t, the GHD Helios – while still expensive – gives you the same, if not more, bang for your buck. The revamped model contains proprietary sensors that monitor temperature levels to protect your scalp and hair from damage and maintain “a safe 55ºC (131ºF)” when in Scalp Protect Mode. Dyson claims that this is best temperature for effective and comfortable hair drying, with minimal risk, based on tests in its lab. When you select the different speed and temperature settings, there are now new lights in the body of the dryer that change colour to let you see, at a glance, which setting you’ve selected. Elsewhere, the Supersonic Nural features two new modes – Attachment Learning and Pause Detect. Attachment Learning automatically recognises and remembers your preferred settings for each attachment, while Pause Detect temporarily turns the dryer off when it’s put down. The new Dyson Supersonic Nural is due to come to the UK in May, priced at £399.99. Learn more here, or keep scrolling to read our Dyson Supersonic review. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Original Dyson Supersonic review continues below Since its launch in 2016, the Dyson Supersonic has consistently topped best hair dryer lists while making very few changes to its design. It’s an outstanding appliance providing incredible power combined with a sleek, well-balanced finish. However, as with most Dyson products, the £330 price of the Supersonic has remained constant. The company rarely drops the price, even during big sales events – or if it does, it’s usually marginal. Such is its belief that this really is the best hair dryer money can buy. More recently, though, cheaper rivals have been knocking on Dyson’s door. The likes of the GHD Helios and the Revlon 2-in-1. Attempting to produce the same performance at more than half the price. So, in 2024, is the Dyson Supersonic still worth buying? In our Dyson Supersonic review below, we cover our impressions of its design, performance, attachments, and whether it’s really worth £330. We have mid-long, fine hair, and our impressions are based on our personal experience with the Dyson hair dryer. > Buy now from Boots | Buy now from Dyson -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DYSON SUPERSONIC REVIEW The Dyson Supersonic was the UK brand’s first foray into beauty tools but has been on a roll in recent years with new and upgraded releases. Within the hair dryer range alone there are now three versions of the Supersonic, the Dyson Airstrait and the Dyson Airwrap. The details of each and how they compare is below: * Dyson Supersonic: The original Dyson hair dryer. It costs £359.99, has three speeds and four temperature settings and ships with five attachments as standard. * Dyson Airstrait: A wet-to-dry styler that looks like a pair of straighteners but uses hot air to dry and straighten your hair at the same time. Read our full Dyson Airstrait review. * Dyson Airwrap: The biggest appear of the multistyler, Airwrap is its curling function that uses something what’s known as the Coanda effect to pull the hair towards the barrel and curl it in seconds. Yet it also comes with a range of attachments including smoothing brushes, and volumising brushes to suit different hair types and needs. * Dyson Supersonic r: A 30% slimmer, 20% lighter version of the original Supersonic that’s been designed exclusively for salons and hair professionals. The Supersonic r is due to launch at the end of 2024 and it has a streamlined heater, the advanced Dyson Hyperdymium motor and sensors that recognise which attachment is in use and adjusts the speed and heat settings accordingly. This feature is called Attachment Learning. * Dyson Supersonic Nural: Taking its name from the fact it features new Dyson Nural sensors, the Dyson Supersonic Nural monitors temperature levels to protect the scalp and hair from damage. By intelligently monitoring levels and adjusting airflow, the sensors make sure the Nural operates at what Dyson calls “a safe 55ºC (131ºF)” when in Scalp Protect Mode. It has the same Attachment Learning feature seen on the Supersonic r. Due to launch in May. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DYSON SUPERSONIC REVIEW: DESIGN Victoria Woollaston-Webber With its long handle and short barrel, the Dyson hair dryer doesn’t look like any other dryer on the market, nor does it work the same. Instead of having the filter at the rear of the barrel, it is located at the bottom of the handle. The relatively large motor found on rival dryers has been re-engineered and shrunk to sit alongside the filter. Motor and battery technology are what Dyson is renowned for. They’re what make its vacuums so powerful, and why its fans are so popular. The shifting of components within the dryer isn’t just for effect – they fundamentally change the shape of the Supersonic. This makes it more compact, and ideal for travelling. The Dyson Supersonic is available in black, pink, or copper. Plus, for a limited time you can get it in blue and copper as part of a special edition range, alongside a special edition Corrale and Airwrap. It’s available from Dyson and Boots. > READ NEXT: GHD Helios review > Buy now from Boots | Buy now from Dyson -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DYSON HAIR DRYER REVIEW: EASE-OF-USE The power button on the Dyson Supersonic is on the underside of the handle and the Dyson hair dryer comes with a more than adequate 2.7-metre cable. On the rear of the circular barrel are two buttons – one controls the three power speeds, the other controls the heat settings. By having the filter in the bottom of the handle, it results in the Dyson Supersonic being well-balanced and less awkward to use than larger, longer rivals. Rather than holding the dryer and having to balance the weight of the large motor and components found in traditional dryers at the top of the appliance, all the weight with the Dyson is where your hand sits. This makes the design of the Supersonic both aesthetically pleasing, practical and comfortable. Switching between speeds and temperatures mid-dry is a little tricky because you have to twist your hand from its natural position to press the respective buttons or stop drying your hair to access them. On traditional dryers, the buttons are typically where your fingers naturally grip the handle so it feels more intuitive. The plus side of the Dyson Supersonic control layout, however, is that it’s near on impossible to change a setting accidentally. The strength of the air flow, and the heat, are indicated by easy-to-understand LEDs on the rear of the barrel. Plus, Supersonic remembers your last-used settings each time you turn it on meaning that unless you’re mixing things up, you won’t even need to touch them. > Buy now from Boots | Buy now from Dyson -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DYSON SUPERSONIC REVIEW: PERFORMANCE The groundbreaking engineering of the Dyson hair dryer has also been designed to allow the hair dryer to take advantage of the company’s Air Multiplier technology. This means it is able to increase its overall power without upping the watts in its motor. Its 13 internal blades whip up to 41 litres of air per second. You can learn more about how this technology works via the video below. On paper, if you were to judge the Dyson hair dryer purely by the numbers, the Supersonic appears to fall short in terms of power. Don’t be fooled into thinking a higher wattage equals better performance, though. The Supersonic surpasses every other hair dryer we’ve ever used despite offering a significantly lower wattage. It cut our hair drying time in half. We can now dry our hair straight from the shower in two minutes and 30 seconds for our shoulder-length thin hair. People with thicker hair have reported that they’ve seen even bigger time savings, dropping drying time from 15 minutes to a mere five. If you’ve got thick, unruly hair we highly recommend the Dyson hair dryer. And it does all this while being surprisingly quiet, too. If you’ve ever used a Dyson vaccum, especially a handheld one, you’ll know there is always a slight delay in the motor turning on, and off, when you press the power button. The Dyson Supersonic does similar. Instead of being a fault, this helps the hair dryer effectively shut down the motor and preserve energy. FURTHER READING: This hair porosity test will reveal if you have high, medium or low porosity hair – and which products you need What’s more, the Dyson Supersonic uses what the company calls “intelligent heat controls”. These are said to be capable of measuring air temperature 20 times a second. By constantly monitoring the air temperature, the Dyson Supersonic promises to be more gentle on your hair. The result? Increased shine and less breakage. As much as it’s hard to quantify just how well the Supersonic treated our hair, we’ve had compliments about its shine since using it – even from our hairdresser. A Dyson spokesperson told mamabella that bog-standard heat-defence sprays work by stopping the amount of heat accessing the hair. Creating a barrier. He added that you can get a similar result by just turning the heat down on the dryer a notch. That is unless you get a heat-defence spray that also contains hair moisturising and other ingredients. The one minor downside for all of the Dyson hair dryer’s speed and power is that it does almost blow dry your hair into submission. The blasts of air, while quick at removing moisture, tend to flatten the hair shaft. While this makes it look shiny, it also means your hair will lack any real style or volume. Unless you’re skilled at blow-drying (which we are not!). We’ve found we get more volume and bounce, without sacrificing too much on time or shine, with the cheaper, less technically advanced Revlon One-Step. You can read more about this in our Revlon One-Step Review. > Buy now from Boots | Buy now from Dyson -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DYSON SUPERSONIC REVIEW: ATTACHMENTS Dyson Despite its high price, you do get a number of accessories bundled in with the Dyson hair dryer. These include two Dyson Supersonic nozzles and a diffuser, as well as a heat mat. Rival dryers may be cheaper but many charge separately for more than a single accessory. Not that these will bring their prices close to the price of the Dyson Supersonic, in the majority of cases, but it’s worth considering. You can buy extra attachments for the Dyson Supersonic, for around £30 each, and it depends on your hair type and style but they’re not vital. The majority of hair types and styles will suit the range of three attachments included in the box. The Dyson Supersonic attachments are as follows: * Smoothing Nozzle (included in the box): As the name suggests, this Creates smoother airflow for a smoother finish * Concentrator Nozzle (included in the box): This nozzle concentrates the hair by being wider and thinner than the Smoothing Nozzle. This helps with more precision styling. * Diffuser (included in the box): This helps dry curls more naturally. * Wide-Tooth Comb Attachment: Ideal for afro hair, or people with tight curls. It helps lengthen and shape textured hair. * Gentle Air Attachment: This attachment is great for people with sensitive scalps, and fine hair. * Flyaway Attachment: This attachment helps get rid of frizz and is used to smooth your style. The Flyaway Attachment is the latest to join the collection. Designed to get rid of flyaways and reduce frizz, the curved attachment is said to be inspired by the way hair stylists use a styling concentrator and round brush to smooth the hair down. Early prototypes used bristles but they brought the static, and hence the flyaway hairs, back so Dyson turned to the Coanda effect seen on its Airwrap dryer instead. This effect draws the hairs toward the attachment and then the shape of the tool smooths flyaways in just one use. We’ve spent the past month putting it to the test and while it takes a tiny bit of getting used to, it really does make a huge difference. We’d usually rely on hair spray or straightening our hair to get rid of flyaways, yet this tool does it with minimal damage or stickiness. What we love about each of these attachments is that they connect to the main dryer via magnets. There’s no need to try to force each one in place or try to remove them. This also makes it easier, and safer, to swap attachments mid-styling without having to either burn your hand on the hot attachment or wait until the attachment has cooled down. They also move very little compared to other attachments we’ve used, namely on the GHD Air. You can read more about the GHD Air in our best hair dryer guide. You can also buy presentation cases for the Supersonic, as well as display stands. The full range of Dyson hair dryer attachments can be found here.
