Despite having no formal training in winemaking, Latif Jiji ’52 has run New York
City’s sole vineyard as a backyard hobby for more than 30 years. “My experience
has been, all my life: You stick with it, you achieve it,” he says. “I don’t
like to give up.”

A new patch applies painless ultrasonic waves to the skin, creating tiny
channels that drugs can pass through. Compared to oral medications,“this is a
much more targeted, focused modality of drug delivery,” says Aastha Shah.

EHS’s Lab Plastics Recycling Program gathers plastics from 212 labs, recycling
some 280 pounds weekly. “I really appreciate the effort EHS has made to
implement this program to help us reduce our impact on the environment,” Barbara
Karampalas says.

RESEARCH NEWS

Scientists have identified neurons in the brain that may contribute to some of
the earliest symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. The cells occur within a region of
the hypothalamus that could be a good target for potential new drugs to treat
the disease.
