With impact on both a local and global scale, the program raises funds for disaster relief, organizes staff volunteering, awards charitable grants, and runs the IMF’s annual giving campaign. Fiscal year 2020 was the program’s biggest year yet, with donations to nonprofits totaling US$ 4.2 million. GIVING Last year’s annual giving campaign, which ran from November to December 2019, broke records for both dollars raised and staff participation. For the first time in campaign history, the IMF matched all contributions dollar for dollar—up from 50 percent in previous years. In addition, the Giving Together program organized fundraisers for the victims of natural disasters in the Bahamas, Albania, Australia, and at the outset of the COVID-19 outbreak in China. After the global pandemic was declared, a humanitarian appeal raised US$ 288,000 for the WHO Solidarity Response Fund. In total, IMF employees and retirees raised US$ 3.6 million in donations and matching funds in support of charitable causes and humanitarian relief during Fiscal Year 2020. GRANTS In addition to the IMF’s corporate matching on employee donations to charitable organizations, the Fund also awards grants to charities worldwide that foster economic independence through educational and economic opportunities, in addition to other areas of focus. In Fiscal Year 2020, the IMF awarded US$ 215,000 in grants to charities across the globe. Additionally, corporate donations totaling US$ 110,000 were provided by senior management during country visits to developing economies in support of grassroots charities. In response to the devastation of the COVID-19 pandemic, the IMF has also provided US$ 200,000 in exceptional grants to local nonprofit organizations. Learn More VOLUNTEERING Service has always been a key component of the Giving Together program. Both through Fund-wide service days and through individual and small group service activities, it is just one of the many ways in which IMF staff give back to their local communities. During Fiscal Year 2020, staff volunteered to help a wide variety of nonprofit organizations serving the Washington, D.C. metro area. As part of the IMF’s Annual Day of Service held on Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2020, staff assembled hygiene kits for vulnerable low-income women. That spirit of service is seen throughout the year. Within the past 12 months, staff have also tutored D.C. area high school students in financial literacy and English and made masks for health care workers.
